The orchestra is what made the event for me. Even though the soprano hit all the notes, I thought her voice was a bit harsh. The conductor was very good.

    Nice but could be improved

    by beo6 on 1/4/11Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Orchestra, solists and ballet was great. It made this contcert enojoyable event. Conductor lacked joy, inspiration and charisma to made it a wonderful event. ( no small talk between songs, not enough interesting short explanations,no sparkles, no jokes, no audience involvment from his part till the very end. He sounded tired, rushed, and could barely breath even when he was not conducting , I felt bad that he needs to talk at all ) The stage could have used lots more flowers and decorations. Again, the everalsting music, the Orchestra, solists and ballet was wonderful. Thanks

    Stunning New Year's Symphony

by Anonymous on 1/4/11Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - Baltimore

Salute To Vienna was absolutely the best way to bring in the New Year! It was without a doubt one of the very best performances I have seen in a long time. My seats were close to the stage, which gave us a close up look at the preformers. I left the hall with such a wonderful feeling, a feeling that I wish I could bottle up and keep with me the entire year. Thank you to the Meyerhoff for bringing this wonderful concert to Baltimore. I only wish they were performing again on January 1st instead of the the 2nd in 2011, unfortunately I will be working.

    Salute to Vienna was fabulous.

by Ursulina on 1/5/10Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

A performance to remember - conductor interacted with audience in humorous way. Singers and dancers excellent. Program interesting to ll year olds because it moved along quickly and was colorful. Their first exposure to a concert of classical music and they truly enjoyed it. Highly recommend it as a holiday concert for the entire family.

The music by Strauss was played beautifully by the orchestra. The dancers were so graceful and ephemeral The tenor was the best I've ever heard the soprano was gorgeous The conductor masterful and charming

Salute to Vienna New Year's Concert 2010

by Goldschatz on 1/4/10Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Concert was just beautiful. Will come back next year for sure. Performances of artists were first class. This was my first time at the Disney Concert Hall. The event was sold out in the premier seatings. Only a few seats were left in the higher balconies. Songs of Franz von Suppe, Emmerich Kalman and Johann Strauss brought back memories of my child hood when my mother would sing these songs.

    Salute to Vienna

by SFVRSM on 1/4/10Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Very enjoyable program. I loved and my mother loved it! By the way, the Orchestra View seats (behind the orchestra and in front of the Organ) were very enjoyable. A whole new perspective. Saw the orchestra and performers up close -- if mainly from the rear. Would highly recommend these seats -- especially for an all orchestra performance. You can really see what the conductor is doing.

competent show - less than expected for the cost

by jeepsudds on 1/4/10Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

conductor was good and had a charming personality in his humorous banter, and (we eventually found out) not a bad singer! Featured vocal soloists were good, but soprano lower notes were covered by orchestra so if you didn't already know the song, you couldn't get it. I had the impression that the orchestra must have been local musicians who hadn't had much chance to work with the material and the conductor, resulting in often somewhat uninspired playing. The dancers' choreography was amazing in that they had to deal with such a quirky space...I wondered how they avoided the front corner of the step-up on each side. The space clearly limited what they were able to do, but what they were given they did well. I think the finale of the "Blue Danube" would have been more satisfyingly festive if the singers had been involved (I believe lyrics exist), and if the dancers had danced with the whole piece. For us, we expected somewhat more with an $90 ticket in terrace last row.

    A great start to 2010!

    by DRDR2 on 1/2/10Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

This was a tribute to Vienna, and the waltz and polka dominated as the music forms. This was an entertaining and excellent combination of orchestra, voice and ballet; fun plus a well paced and varied program and the audience was engaged throughout. Hans Richter, conductor, contnually engaged the audience in an entertaining and informative manner. Anita Lukics voice seemed to be drowned by the orchestra at times, but with few exceptions the orchestral instruments and the voices were well balanced. The informality of the final pieces and the resultant inclusion of the audience was a great way for all to greet the New Year. The ballet was nice, but we would have liked to have seen at least one formal waltz dance piece.
