About

Hailing from Birmingham, Alabama, Roy started his comedy career in 1999 at the age of 19 while attending Florida A&M University.  Roy's comedy crosses all races and cultural lines, which has allowed Roy to work with an array of comedians ranging from D.L. Hughley, Ron White, Monique, Bill Engvall, and Katt Williams.  In a 2009 piece ‘Entertainment Weekly' described Roy's comedy as "charismatic crankiness".

In October of 2006 Roy made his network television debut on Late Night with David Letterman.  In 2008 Roy appeared on HBO's historic Def Comedy Jam, and this summer was selected by America as one of the top three finalists on The Last Comic Standing on NBC.

Roy is an online video blog correspondent for "The Soup" on E! Network. He is also a freelance writer for a variety of morning shows, and his prank calls can now be heard on more than 40 national radio shows, including Jamie Foxx's Foxxhole Radio on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio.

Roy appeared at the 2006 Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in the "New Faces Showcase" where critics awarded him top honors.  The Hollywood Reporter called Roy a "standout" among all the New Faces of 2006.  The Montreal Gazette said, "Roy Wood Jr. gives tremendous show" taking "the top spot".  Later that year he performed at the Las Vegas Comedy Festival.  In 2009, Roy appeared on the Bob and Tom Radio Show: The Comedy Tour a one-hour special, which aired on Comedy Central.

In 2002, Roy earned a slot as one of ten national finalists in Comedy Central's Laugh Riots competition in Los Angeles.  In March 2003, Roy was selected for Star Search on CBS where he advanced to the semi-finals.  He has also appeared on It's Showtime at the Apollo, Live in Hollywood and the 2005 season of Comedy Central's Premium Blend and BET's Comic View. Roy has also performed on The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson and BBC America's The World Stand Up, which was taped in London.

He has recorded three nationally-released prank call CD's: My Momma Made Me Wear This (2003), Confessions of a High School Bench Warmer (2005) and I'll Slap You to Sleep! (2009).

    Roy is our favorite comedian

by Margie on 3/17/23Punch Line Philly - Philadelphia

We have seen him 3 times over the years. He is always relatable, has fresh content, and makes you laugh and relax. Punch Line Philly is a small venue and we are so happy he keeps coming back since he is quite a star now. There is no show better than Roy Wood Jr.

Great comedy line up - Bad venue

by Dave on 3/6/23Punch Line Philly - Philadelphia

I'd been wanting to see Roy Wood, Jr. live for a few years now and he did not disappoint. Great set and great group of openers. Punchline just can't seem to get organized, though. Having people lined up out in the rain 20 minutes after the scheduled show start time is bad. Not having drink orders taken until the second act was on the stage was also not great. It seems to be a staffing/management issue and I hope they can figure it out, because it's a big enough venue to pull great acts, but the experience in the venue detracts from the performances on stage.

I was very impressed with his comedy. I though he did an AMAZING job. I watch him on TV and wanted something different than that character and that's what he delivered. I can't wait to see him again.

    Fun line up- Great headliner

by SantaCruz Giggles on 2/14/23Cobb's Comedy Club - San Francisco

Saturday evening, in North Beach was beautiful. We had tickets to Cobbs' early show (7:00). The opener/MC was good. She had great energy and some funny bits. The second comic was very funny. She had lived locally for quiet a while and she used that to all of our advantage. Roy Wood Jr. was energetic, and very funny. He was working on some new, post quarantine material. It was good. His last bit was insightful, personal and very funny. A great bill, like the one we enjoyed on Saturday, demonstrated the best value in town is smart funny people, with a mic on a stage.

Excellent show! We absolutely loved it. The host and both openers were great. We enjoyed James Davis’ set so much that we are going to look up his special. Roy was hilarious, even better than when we saw him a few years ago, and we will definitely see him again!

    Sore face muscles

by East Bay Comedy Fan on 8/30/21Cobb's Comedy Club - San Francisco

Roy Wood Jr.‘s show was the funniest live comedy show I’ve been to in the last 25 years. That includes Kevin Hart, George Lopez, Bill Burr, and Trevor Noah. It was hilarious as well as relevant. I left there with my face muscles sore.
