Roxy Music Live in Concert

Roxy Music was formed in 1970 by lead singer and songwriter Bryan Ferry and bass guitarist Graham Simpson. Ferry had just lost his job teaching ceramics at a girls' school for holding unauthorized record-listening sessions. Ferry decided to start a band and put out ads to attract musicians. He enlisted Andy Mackay on saxophone and oboe, Roger Bunn on guitar and Dexter Lloyd on drums. Brian Eno, who has found enormous success as a solo artist, was also brought on for synthesizer and treatments, although he left soon after the group's second album release. The difference in style between Ferry and Eno would create the band's signature sound, but it also eventually drove the two apart. Roxy Music gained critical attention quickly and was signed to Island Records almost immediately upon the release of their debut self-titled album in 1972. The album was a significant success, reaching No. 10 on the UK charts. Things really heated up when the group performed their debut single "Virginia Plain" on BBC's "Top of the Pops." The song was later listed on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Debut Singles of All Time list. Their signature style was displayed for the world and became a template for the glam trend in the UK. The band released their second album, For Your Pleasure, in 1973. This album turned out to be Eno's last project with Roxy Music, a lineup change that would send the band in a new direction. They released Stranded in 1973, Country Life in 1974, and Siren in 1975. Rolling Stone referred to Stranded and Country Life as marking "the zenith of contemporary British art rock." The group took a break in 1976 before reuniting to record Manifesto in 1979, Flesh and Blood in 1980 and their final studio album Avalon in 1982. After taking a second and final hiatus that began in 1983, Roxy Music got back together for their first reunion tour in 2001. Since then, Rolling Stone has ranked Roxy Music No. 98 on their "The Immortals -- The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time" list, and in 2019, Roxy Music was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Over the course of their career, Roxy Music have played many famous venues, like the American Airlines Center in Dallas and the TD Garden in Boston.

    Mostly great

by Kim on 10/2/22Kia Forum - Inglewood

At the Kia forum NOBODY n the parking lot knew where the VIP entrance was. Many people inside didn’t know where it was. It wasn’t marked well and we saw no signage where we went thru basic security entrance. Please please do a better job so we can avoid going around in circles to get our little gifts!

    What happened to the Forum?

by Frequent concert goer on 10/1/22Kia Forum - Inglewood

The music and show was fantastic, but the fact that they changed numerous sections of seats the day of the event (for us 2x before we had an open section) and their was no air conditioning while it was a hot evening is unacceptable. I used to enjoy shows at the forum. The facilities issues made the experience frustrating and unsatisfying.

    Wonderful, glad i went

Really was interested in early stuff and they did not disappoint. Name of song not sure, but inflatable darling are some of the lyrics. Good sound for a near deaf guy 😆 .

    Not a yawner

by Quackerjack on 10/1/22Kia Forum - Inglewood

I have seen this band before. Before was better. Bryan lost his octives and sounded muffeld at times. The range has soured as well. 77 years old does that to anyone I believe. Did enjoy seeing his presence on stage however. Overall it was a good show but the Roxy magic never surfaced to it's full potential.

    Listless performance uncomfortable venue

by Chg on 10/1/22Kia Forum - Inglewood

Forum was way too hot the AC should have been much higher. Ferry seemed tired it wasn’t fun. Floor seats janky and too close together

The Band was Great! The Venue Sucked

by Paco on 10/1/22Kia Forum - Inglewood

When we arrived to the venue, we were told thst our tickets had been "upgraded." When ee got to out seats, they eete the worst possible seats! They sat us to the extreme left of the stsge and we could not see anything. Why did the Kia Forum offer me the tickets i purchased only to bait and switch me? No reason was given for their "upgrade." Luckily, security is not too important at the vene and i was able to sneak away to a better, more expensive seat. Take that!

    Seeing Roxy for 1st Time

by Tony P on 10/1/22Kia Forum - Inglewood

As far as legacy live music acts, my bucket list is pretty depleted by now but the rare chance to finally see Roxy Music for the first time lured me (and some pals) to the Forum. Friends of mine sometimes argue what number of original members constitutes a legit reunion (rule of three?) and when a band needs to relinquish a name (Steely Dan without Walter Becker? Really?). No such quibbles with this 50th Roxy roll out which featured all four (drummer Paul Thompson, saxophone player Andy Mackey, guitarist Phil Manzanera and matinee idol Bryan Ferry. Brian Eno left after the second LP and never looked/came back though rumors persist he might turn up at a coming Glastonbury Music Festival UK gig). For many of we oldsters, Roxy Music (with their racy album covers) helped shoo us away at a young age from sweaty, lunkhead ‘70s hard rock into a GLAM-ourous, elegant cabaret world of tango steps and fleeting romance. Ferry’s lyrical sophistication and anachronistic camp collided with crazed keyboards and jagged guitar solos, applied sparingly like exotic seasoning vs. a ketchup dump. Too cheeky to be pompous this was art rock we felt in our heart not our head since Ferry with his quivering, searching voice, was the first crooner I embraced. Manzanera (in fine form the other night) has explained a reason for the durability of the Roxy sound was the band played live in the studio, so their records lack the thin, synth-buried vibe of the‘80s acts they massively influenced. Roxy Music were musicians not producer tools, evident all night especially as Mackay’s saxophone (despite 9 other extra players on stage) was given room to roam. Roxy acts their age so when Ferry said “I hope you enjoy the set we’ve prepared” it’s because this wasn’t a re-creation of their manic side and tilted as much towards Sade freaks as punks. No “Virginia Plain” (waah) but they played “Love Is the Drug,” “Editions of You,” “Remake/Remodel” and “Do the Strand.” Yet some of the most entrancing moments were from AVALON their last and most popular record – light listening at its most buoyant and catchy and “Every Dreamhome a Heartache” the sinister track that’s gained new ears thanks to the MINDHUNTER series. Roxy Music warranted the (non-sold out) Forum space because they teamed with St. Vincent (the gig was on Annie Clark’s birthday no less). She provided the hard funk and arena ready pounding sonics she’s amply displayed on her DADDY’S HOME tour (her closing “The Melting of the Sun” with punchy backup singers was a hard act to follow). Even though Roxy Music had nothing to prove they nevertheless dared to be sedate when the material called for it despite the cavernous surroundings. They trusted their catalog which they performed with supple grace, Ferry raising his arms to salute his bandmates like a band leader not a rock star. Bringing a largely boomer crowd to its feet for a singalong several times (cranky knees be damned) Roxy Music were “More Than This.”

    Loved It, except...

    by GForceF1 on 10/1/22Kia Forum - Inglewood

Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music never disappoint. The coolest of the cool. I can't say the same for the cool tall couple, she 5'10", he 6', probably cool record industry types, in front of us that thought it would be cool to wear identical wide brimmed cool hats which blocked our view. Not cool. Or the fat woman behind us who was fanning herself with a card and a charm bracelet that was flapping and jangling back and forth making noise. And thanks to the Forum for turning on the AC only after the show was over. Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, and Eno are probably my favorites of all time, but amazing how inconsiderate the public is.

    Amazing 5 Star

by T Val on 10/1/22Kia Forum - Inglewood

St Vincent is awesome, uniquely creative & Talented!! One of a kind, she reminds me of when Bowie first started…. Go see her!!!!!!! Roxy music is tight, 14 musicians all incredible. Phil Manzanara (El Perfecto is his Nick name from David Gilmore) nailed it to another level while Bryan Ferry still has it going on at 77… Both bands 5 Star ⭐️ Which happens once in a blue moon 😎

    Still hot after 50 years

by SAS on 10/1/22Kia Forum - Inglewood

Astonishingly, Roxy still sound fabulous. Innovative, cutting edge and hot. They looked great, sounded great and delivered. Its a shame they didnt play longer after waiting all these years. Just 1hr 40 mins, though St Vincent was god too. The other negative was that they ignored Stranded, which is for me their finest work, and did 8 songs from their more soporific later albums. Still a real pleasure.

What a great band. Ferry's voice sucks you in!

by Bobby D on 10/1/22Kia Forum - Inglewood

This band really sets the mood. My wife and I fell in love again! One of the most enjoyable shows I've seen a quite a while. Absolutely loved every minute! I little disappointed in the 1 1/2 hour show with no encore. Should have at least played a two song encore. 1:45 at least! I haven't seen a show that short in many years. But, very fond memories.

    Do The Strand

by Captkrate on 10/1/22Kia Forum - Inglewood

After the marathon show for Taylor Hawkins (6 hrs.) the night before The Forum cleaned up quite nicely. Roxy Music sound and vision were spot on. Bryan Ferry and his M8's didn't disappoint. Phil Manzanera guitar sound and playing was quite a delight. Dennis Mackay on sax brought a mood and smoothness to their overall sound. I never heard The Forum sound that good. Great night of music starting with St. Vincent. Only a confident band would book such a good act. She could of headlined herself. It reminded me what great songwriting and musicianship can be. Cheers to Roxy Music!
