    Romeo & Juliet ballet

by milwaukeeballet on 11/5/13Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

costumes were not good. can't see beauty of dancers with the heavy peasant costumes throughout the entire ballet. also, 2 intermissions are too many. 1 is plenty, 2 is frustrating.

Absolutely gorgeous and full of emotion. Loved Tybalt, Lord C's costume, and Romeo and Juliet of course!

This must have been the most disappointing event I have ever attended. The program never explained that there would be a short, very amateur, totally unrelated and boring scene at the beginning nor did it mention that there would be a 20 minute intermission after a 30 minute performance before Romeo and Juliet began. The ballet itself was done well but it was almost over before it began. We paid $63.00 each for our tickets and certainly did not get a performance worth that kind of charge. It went for less than an hour and the whole evening started at 8 and we were out before 9:30. It was obvious from the program that the matinee performance of Sleeping Beauty was at least two to three hours long because it began at 2 and the traffic was leaving the Center at 4:45. Seems to be a more appropriate deal for that kind of money but I cannot vouch for the value.

    Romeo and Juliet was disappointing!

by Anonymous on 3/23/11Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport News

I purchased 4 tickets for my daughters and I to attend the Russian National Ballet's performance of Romeo and Juliet. We were all very excited about seeing the production and seeing this classic story of two star-crossed lovers come to life before our eyes with the interpretation of each ballet dancer. However, after watching the first scene of Act 1, we found it disappointing in that Romeo and Juliet never appeared and the cast of the ballet dancers were, for some reason, dancing to the music of Chopin and interpreting something other than Romeo and Juliet. During intermission after talking amongst ourselves as well as to other audience members and some of the aisle attendants at the Ferguson Center, we discovered that the dance company was indeed dancing to the wrong music and that there was some sort of mix-up. There were evidently two dance companies traveling together and the wrong music and dancers appeared for the entire first half of the show. The second half was what we expected with the ballet dancers dressed in costumes, scenery depicting the time and events occuring in the bedroom of Juliet, and of course, everyone could then follow the story...finally. I can speak for the entire audience and say that we all would have loved to have seen and experienced what we paid to enjoy....Romeo and Juliet...rather than to have to play the guessing game. That was not the element of surprise we were looking for, to say the least.

Russian Ballet's abridged version - Romeo & Juliet

by DanceFan54 on 3/23/11Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport News

While the dancing during the ballet was beautiful, we did not see the "full length ballet", Romeo and Juliet, as advertised and listed in the program. Instead, we saw what we assumed was a prologue of many ballerinas dancing in white, which we later found out was a series of waltzes danced to a piece by Chopin! So when the house lights came up after this dance, most of the audience members stayed in their seats because we assumed the real program, Romeo and Juliet, was about to start. 20 - 30 minutes later, it did start and less than an hour later, it was done, obviously an abbreviated version. Since I've never seen this story performed as a ballet before, I wasn't sure which parts would be included but the description in the program included all the essentials, including the balcony scene which we never saw. The management of the Ferguson Center was as perplexed as we were and was to call the management co on Monday to find out what had happened. So yes, the dancing and staging was beautiful but we didn't see what we paid to see.

Romeo & Juliet in fast forward a disappointment.

by jvooaoij on 3/23/11Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport News

The evening was marketed and ticketed as the full length, 2 act ballet of Romeo & Juliet but apparently the Russian National Ballet decided to do otherwise beginning the show with music by Chopin. The "white" ballet was performed technically well but the choreography was weak and not challenging or exciting. A strong regional ballet group could have done as well. Romeo & Juliet was performed after intermission in one act and condensed in a why to be almost comical. The couple romanced, met with the priest and died all in Juliet's bedroom in the span of about 10 minutes. The masked ball didn't even exist. The dancing was technically satisfactory but again the challenging lifts and sections were absent. Only the sword fight scene had any excitement in it. Marius Petipa turned over in his grave at least three times that evening! I had seen the Russian National Ballet at Ferguson previously and was quite impressed so this was a major disappointment. I suggest the Ferguson not pay the company for the performance since they did not deliver what was promised and that the patrons receive a refund or at least a credit toward next season's performances. To do less will cause me to question whether future shows will be as advertised. Ferguson has a good reputation and should not let this incident tarnish it.. .

when it got to Romeo & Juliet, it was great!

by DDell556 on 3/22/11Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport News

Act I of this ballet was not Romeo & Juliet. There was no warning or explanation either. It was bizarre. Beautiful white-dressed dancers came out and did a 45 min. production of . . . I have no idea. During Intermission, there was a rumble of the audience wondering if we are at the right performance! We took 4 children (ages 9-13) to see this ballet because we had just studied it at home. They were bored and wondering what was going on. The attendants/ushers were calming everyone and reassuring us that it would be Romeo & Juliet for the second act. Sure enough, when the curtains opened back up, the scenery was different, and the costumes were in the correct era! The R&J production was fabulous. Much emotion, drama, action! Beautiful! I just wish they could have spread it out into the two acts or omitted the first act. They didn't mesh together at all in my opinion.

Romeo & Juliet was far too short and not worth it

by mawhite on 3/22/11Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport News

The play started out at 8pm with a completely different play altogether that was not in the program, which left most of the audience confused; although beautiful, no one really knew what was going on. This lasted about 30-40 minutes, we then went into an intermission, came back to our seats and the actual play began at around 9pm, the play was over and we were back to our cars by 9:40. I was expecting the play to be a "full-length ballet" as it was advertised in the program. I was utterly disappointed, I was looking forward to enjoying a classy night out full of excitement provided by the Russian Ballet and was cut entirely too short. Although the dancers were fantastic and what we did see was enjoyable, I wish it would have been longer. It was not worth the price of a ticket. I will not be going to another show.

    Romeo & Juliet was inspiring

by Irishman53 on 3/14/11Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

Excellent dance and choreography....Characters were remakable in their performance of each of the primary roles. Disappointed that the road show producer did not provide enough print programs for all those in attendance.

    Tragically Beautiful

by SharGirl on 3/14/11Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

A must see performance. I sat in the 8th row with a few friends and to see the performance up close was amazing. The first half was a bit slow, but the second was just unbelieveable. The dancers evoked so much emotion. I had goose bumps throughout much of the production. The principal dancer who played Juliet really stole the show. She was grace in motion. Simply stunning, elegant and powerful. Although you know the ending, it still catches you and you literally feel the grief and anguish and loss. But, you just know that their love has to transcend death. The performance was beautifully choreographed and directed by Nigel who played Romeo. Set design was also fantastic.

The ballet with The Buffalo Philharmonic was so beautiful. I went to have a lovely evening and came away exhausted by dazzling display of raw emotions. I will never forget them. The entire troup was so talented. Dazzling. Having the music performed by this Orchestra was an event by itself:)

The Neglia Ballet Company is fantastic and they are giving us Buffalonians wonderful ballets. Their choreography is captivating and was one of the best Romeo and Juliets I have ever seen. I look foward to their next perfomance.!

My First Ballet! This performance was amazing.

I was truly memorized. The talent and the story line was quite moving. Juliet and her Romeo danced like they were really in love. Maybe they are.
