    Romeo and Juliette was great

by Anonymous on 11/19/12Symphony Hall - Phoenix

The opera was beautiful, we went to the pre curtain dinner and were not thrilled. For $50 a plate we got a buffet style meal that was not great. Plus there were only three big tables so we were squished in between other patrons. Would not reccomend that I didn't feel we got our money's worth. The opera singers were terrific but there were quite a few stage changes which left us staring at a black curtain. Overall it was good not great. The orchestra was spot on!

    It was no Zefarelli

by Jubilada on 11/18/12Symphony Hall - Phoenix

Chorus was outstanding. Most of the solo voices were very good also, especially Juliette. Second half (after intermission) was draggy. Costumes were nice but looked old/worn. Musical score was pretty but forgettable. Sometimes the orchestra drowned out the singers. Interpreters were very difficult to hear/understand. I'd say this interpretation paled in comparison to Franco Zefarelli's movie as well as to Shakespeare's play.

    Great soprano performance!

by TheAnthemCritic on 11/18/12Symphony Hall - Phoenix

Juliette had a strong vocal performance, requiring incredible strength from many quite difficult postures (lying down, bending over, etc). Romeo's beautiful sound and tone was somewhat undone by the lack of strength. Put in juxtaposition in many duets to that of Juliette, the difference in strength of voice was made very evident. The "bed" scene was very awkwardly choreographed as was the final death scene of Romeo. Over-all, the opera was done masterfully with a well balanced and blended chorus and an overall energy that kept the opera moving.

    Romeo

by jmsband on 11/13/12Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

I enjoyed the performance very much. Costuming was great as were the voices. From my 1st balcony front row, the view was perfect. The only negative I found were the 'readers' between scenes. They were muffled an 'echoey', and basically could not be understood from my location. Otherwise excellent job, and I will be returning to the venue in the future.

Corrine Winters is a rising star

by Nianqua on 11/13/12Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

Very professional production with a great cast--the Nurse was a grammy winning artist and the Juliet was not only beautiful--she sang beautifully as well,

    Excellent!

by aaronwp04 on 11/12/12Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

This opera was excellent! Be forewarned though, if you've never attended the opera before, "Romeo et Juliette" is probably not what you want to start with. It is not a beginner's opera by any stretch of the imagination. All in all though, an exquisite piece of artwork!
