About

Rodrigo y Gabriela on Tour

Do you want flamenco with your heavy metal? Acid rock with your classical guitars? If so, Rodrigo y Gabriela are at your service. Known for a double-guitar attack that translates heavy-metal power to nylon-stringed classical guitars played with flamenco fury, Rodrigo y Gabriela are openhearted entertainers whose musical passion bridges classical and contemporary styles to create a world of its own. Alone on stage, they evoke the passion and precision of heavy metal — such as Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica — and, more recently, the expansive meditations of vintage Pink Floyd. The Mexico City–based guitar duo toured the United States and Europe in 2019 to support their eighth album, Mettavolution.

Rodrigo y Gabriela in Concert

Mexico City natives Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero have been perfecting their rapid-fire fusion of Latin harmonies and rhythms with rock structure since the 2006 release of Rodrigo y Gabriela, which included acoustic cover versions of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and Metallica's "Orion." After meeting in art school as metal-loving teenagers, the couple forged their musical and emotional alliance while busking through Europe. During an eight-year residence in Galway, Gabriela learned how to transfer the driving bodhran-drum rhythms of Irish folk music to her classical guitar.

The instrumentalists continued to play cover songs and salute their influences on concept albums like 11:11 and 9 Dead Alive. Rodrigo y Gabriela's 2019 release, Mettavolution, was their first in five years. It consists of a handful of original tracks topped off by a 19-minute cover version of "Echoes," the sprawling, subtle and mysterious Pink Floyd epic that took up the entire second side of that band's 1971 album Meddle. The title track of Mettavolution, on the other hand, is a typically dynamic Rodrigo y Gabriela explosion of slaps, strums and rapid-fire runs. The title reflects the duo's belief in evolution through compassion, which here translates into nothing less than sheer rock nirvana.

    Fabulous display of creativity

by Bearded Turtle on 5/21/24GLC Live at 20 Monroe - Grand Rapids

I was introduced to this music by my wife, and as a lifelong guitarist I was very impressed. She told me many months ago that if they ever come through the area that we should go. Time passes and boom! Playing in Grand Rapids. SO GOOD!!! Great energy, crowd interaction, and natural display of their own brand of musical genius. Seriously had to fight back some tears I was so excited about the performance. You don’t have to know any of the songs to dive right in and immerse yourself. GO TO A SHOW!!!!!!

    Fantastic all the way around

by Magnifico on 5/21/24GLC Live at 20 Monroe - Grand Rapids

First, Rodrigo Gabriella are a fantastic duo. This was our 3rd time seeing them and it was the best of the 3. Really really enjoy them. 2nd, 20 live Monroe is a GREAT place to see a musical act. We were in the last row of the upper balcony and still felt super close to the stage. I looked this up, 20 live monroe has a seating capacity of 2500( ish). We just saw Wanda Sykes at the Filmore in Detroit the night before. The Filmore has a seating capacity of 2000 ( reserved )seats. We were WAY closer to the stage at 20 live Monroe! The Filmore is very nice and ornate, I would go there again but 20 live Monroe ( which is a 2 1/2 hr drive from where we live) was way better for SEEING the show. I will happily make the 2 1/2 hour drive again to see my favorite performers!

    Killer show!!!!

by Dirty Diablo on 5/20/24Old National Centre - Indianapolis

What a show!!!! If you haven’t seen them, make a point to. For just the two of them, they were full of energy and mesmerizing. I first seen them about 8 years ago at the Aspen Jazz Festival and have been a fan ever since. It’s all instrumental and they don’t do much talking. The highlight of the show for me was for the encore when the came out into the crowd about 10 rows deep and had the crowd form a circle and they danced and played . Luckily I was in the 6th row.

    Amazing Performers

by Jp on 5/20/24Old National Centre - Indianapolis

RyG are breathtaking musicians. Was looking forward to that for quite some time. The only complaint I have is that Violent Femmes was playing the same night in the same building which detracted from the crowd.

    Acoustic to Electric

by Snook J on 5/20/24Old National Centre - Indianapolis

There was a good mix of the older, acoustic songs and he newer, electric songs with orchestra backup. They played so tightly together. Gabriela/s solo allowed her to really show her stuff as she bounced, slapped her guitar and twirled. Together they mess a sound that is so in sync with each other. Such a treat to my ears.

BEST VENUE FOR THE BEST ARTISTS (no, seriously)

by Ample Thought on 5/20/24Old National Centre - Indianapolis

I’ve been all over the world to great venues for music, and Indianapolis has several. But the Old National Center is the one that never disappoints. Rodrigo y Gabriela sounded as good as any concert hall in Europe, and because they are primarily an acoustic act, the timbre and volume were just perfect. Shout out to the front of house engineers/sound guys for their attention to detail (orchestrated ahead of time or not.) I’ve been in the Egyptian Room several times, but even the downstairs concerts are amazing. The staff were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and getting in through security was a breeze. Clear bags, people! It helps.

    Top Notch

by Benny on 5/20/24TempleLive Cleveland Masonic - Cleveland

The performance was very energetic! The performers were very much into the crowd as the crowd was into them. They engaged the audience throughout their performance. Very personable entertainers. We totally enjoyed everything about the show!
