Robert Fripp on Tour
As one of the founding members of influential progressive rock band King Crimson, British guitarist and keyboardist Robert Fripp has an incredible musical pedigree, collaborating with the likes of Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel and David Bowie, among many others. Fripp's tenure with King Crimson endured longer than any other member of the band and he toured with their latest lineup between 2014 and 2021.
Fripp has made a name for himself as a solo artist as well, recording music using a technique he dubbed "Frippertronics" that creates loops using digital technology instead of analogue tapes. Known as an experimental guitar virtuoso, he's been incredibly prolific on his own, releasing more than 30 albums over the course of his impressive multi-decade career. He also frequently collaborates with David Singleton, who managed King Crimson for a time and joins him on several shows in 2022 dubbed "An Evening with that Awful Man and His Manager." Robert Fripp Live in Concert
Born in Dorset, England, Robert Fripp grew up in a working-class family. He received his first guitar for Christmas when he was 10, and knew "almost immediately that this guitar was going to be my life." Inspired by Elvis Presley and jazz musicians Charlie Parker and Charles Mingus, Fripp joined his first band called The Ravens at age 15.
In 1967, Fripp responded to an ad placed by Peter and Michael Giles, who were seeking a singing organist. He got the job and they formed the band Giles, Giles and Fripp. They only recorded one studio album before breaking up, but this set the foundation for King Crimson, formed by Fripp, Michael Giles and Ian McDonald. The band released their debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King, in October 1969 on Island Records. It became an instant success, and The Who guitarist Pete Townshend called the record "an uncanny masterpiece."
Stardom apparently didn't agree with the band, and, citing musical differences, Giles and McDonald left the band following their first American tour in 1969. In the years following, Fripp was King Crimson's sole composer and took the band in the direction of free jazz and jazz rock. Since that time, the band has fluctuated between active and dormant, sometimes taking long hiatuses between projects and featuring various lineups.
Fripp became a music teacher and pioneered a method he called "Guitar Craft" as well as "Frippertronics." He has also been extremely active as a recording musician and a producer, contributing to more than 700 official releases.
I fell for a “concert” event, showing a guy playing guitar, for Fripp, one of the worlds most innovative guitarists. Then realized that the “show” was just he and his manager chatting. Did not attend. Unable to resell, No refund from ticketmaster and the box office never answered phone.
Impressive interaction with Robert Fripp and David Singleton. Fripp opens up to the audience with a Q&A, but he limits the number of questions per individual. It is understandable because I asked two. People asked many. He rarely answered more than one. Both are veritable British gentlemen. Great show to understand the creative process of one of the top guitar players ever.
