About

“The road goes on forever ...”

It’s not always easy to sum up a career — let alone a life’s ambition — so succinctly, but those five words from Robert Earl Keen’s calling-card anthem just about do it. You can complete the lyric with the next five words — the ones routinely shouted back at Keen by thousands of fans a night (“and the party never ends!”) — just to punctuate the point with a flourish, but it’s the part about the journey that gets right to the heart of what makes Keen tick. Some people take up a life of playing music with the goal of someday reaching a destination of fame and fortune; but from the get-go, Keen just wanted to write and sing his own songs, and to keep writing and singing them for as long as possible.

Earlier this year, Keen played a handful of sold-out theater dates with Lyle Lovett, just two old friends swapping songs on acoustic guitars like they used to do on Keen’s front porch in College Station. But the lion’s share of his concert schedule still finds him playing full-tilt with his seasoned road and studio band: Brotherton on guitar, Bill Whitbeck on bass, Tom Van Schaik on drums, and Marty Muse on steel guitar. “I’ve been with this band for 20 years now,” Keen says proudly. “I used to think that was just sort of an interesting fact, but now it’s almost a total anomaly — that just doesn’t happen much. I always felt like once you lock into the right bunch of people, you try to do the best by them that you can. So we’ve been able to stay together a long time, and I think one thing that makes it worthwhile for people to come see us as an act is the fact that it’s not like we’re trying to work it all out onstage — we’ve already worked everything out.”

As for what they’ll be working on next, well, Keen’s fans probably won’t have to wait very long. Despite the fact that 2014 will mark the 30th anniversary of his first album, No Kinda Dancer, Keen’s primary focus remains — as ever — more on the road still ahead than the road behind him.

“We take everything one year at a time,” he says, “but I am hell-bent and bound to make a record this year. I really don’t know what I have in mind as far as what it will be, but what will happen is I will go off to my ‘Scriptorium’ for three or four days to write with no distractions, and I’ll have a record by the time I’m finished. I’m locked into this idea, and I know for a fact that I’m going to get a new record out ... unless I get hit by a bus or get run over by my own bus!”

An incredible evening we will not forget.

by Gunnysmom on 8/3/22Robinson Performance Hall - Little Rock

Robert Earl Keen at the Robinson Performance Hall will be one of my favorite memories. The opening act, Brent Cobb and his band, was a perfect foil presenting a raucous good time. Keen took the stage with the contrast of quiet preparation and simple walk-on. He owned the room for the entire performance and encore. About 20 songs, and every one accompanied by the audience. It was wonderful to watch a master at work. One who uses humor and humility to connect with his audience and bring them along for the stories in his songs.

    REK Last Show

by jclay on 8/1/22Ting Pavilion - Charlottesville

My last time seeing REK before he retires. He and his band put on a great show. It was sad for it to end knowing that it would be the last that I would see. Others that I talked to felt the same way. I have been going to his concerts for a dozen years and while I realize that things do come to an end it is still sad to see it go. I have had some wonderful times at his concerts and will keep some great memories. Thanks for great times you have provided us. It has been a great!

Get out of your seat and go!!

by Jody on 7/30/22Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

Happy to report that Robert Earl Keen is still on it!! His voice is great and he put on a 2 hr show. A lot of artists are still performing sometimes past their prime, but not Robert Earl. I saw him years ago and he may be better now than he was then. Excellent musicians, playlist, great sound quality. Fabulous night!! Kudos Mr.Keen!

    Last Tour

    by Jeff M on 7/27/22Birchmere - Alexandria

Probably the 4th or 5th time seeing REK in a variety of locations (including in a park, in a cave). He and the band sounded great and played most of the songs I wanted to hear. I like the Birchmere as a venue but don't love the process.

If this is the last time I see REK perform, it was memorable. The venue did a great job, especially those trying to seat all ticket holders.

Been lovin REK for sometime now and on his last tour, he did not disappoint. His great story songs combined with a crackerjack band made my summertime music choices complete! Irving Plaza also a nice room to catch a band like this. Long live Robert Earl! I gotta go now, I gotta go.

    Great Performer, Terrible Sound

by Jim L on 7/23/22Irving Plaza - New York

I was really looking forward to this show. Robert Earl Keen puts on a great performance, and this was his final tour. However, the show was marred by a terrible sound system, especially on the vocals. The opening act had the same issues. The lighting was a problem too. They kept rotating the lights around and shining them directly into the audience's eyes.

I liked the fact that he did old standards.

by FredPa on 7/18/22State Theatre - Portland

Hard-driving concerts. The fiddle player was good, but why didn't he play the fiddle on "Amarillo Highway." It was written by a fiddle player.

    Great performance

by Goodgollymollyninja on 7/12/22Shreveport Municipal Memorial Auditorium - Shreveport

It’s a very old venue that still lacks good acoustics. The guys working the sound board lacked knowledge as you could barely make out the words from the singers mics and the bass guitar drowned out almost every song by both performers. Aside from that, REK was funny and entertaining. Still has a great voice and can really play a guitar. Didn’t know the opening singer but she was good. We had first row balcony seats that were perfect. Only thing lacking was good air conditioning.

REK at Shreveport Municipal Memorial Auditorium

by Hugh on 7/11/22Shreveport Municipal Memorial Auditorium - Shreveport

It was our first trip to this venue but not our first Robert Earl Keen concert. The venue is impressive and REK didn't let anyone down. It was a great concert.

    July 2nd celebration

by Revel on 7/5/22The Natchez Bluff - Natchez

Robert Earl Keen was great as always. Paul Thorn killed it as well. Glad we got a chance to see REK on his last tour. He has a tremendous body of work that I recommend highly. The road goes on forever, the party never ends!
