The Robert Cray Band in Concert
When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.
Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.
The Robert Cray Band Background
Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.
Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

Great performance ! Robert played and sang incredibly well and all the band members were incredibly talented as well !
Robert Cray sounds as good as he did many years ago. High energy vocals and guitar with a very competent band. The venue of the Bijou in Knoxville was a perfect match for the band. The Bijou is a fairly intimate setting for a concert at about 600 seats. The sound was great and the accommodations were very good. We had a very enjoyable evening out listening to a very good blues band without much hassle of crowds, parking etc. Would definitely recommend the Robert Cray Band.
Robert Cray is the best, I love his music, I don’t miss his concerts when he comes to Knoxville
I first saw Robert Cray at the Clapton Guitar Festival in Chicago several years ago. No doubt, a great musician whose talent stood up to the best guitarists on the planet. I was excited to see him in Knoxville and he didn't disappoint. His band members are also excellent musicians, and his music is as wonderful as ever. Our only beef about the show was that it was short! While there was no intermission, we were out the door in just over an hour and a half. Based on other recent concerts I have attended, pretty brief. Perhaps, I just wanted more of the great music!
The Bijou is a perfect venue to see Robert Cray. Small and intimate so you can watch this blues magician up close and personal. He takes great care of himself and still has a world-class, blues voice. The band is tight and you can tell they enjoy playing together after all this time. This was a fantastic event! Robert Cray never disappoints.
Well worth it to see him ! Robert and the band put on a great show, lots of energy, and first rate musicianship.
A friend and I drove from Omaha Nebraska to see the show. It was well worth it!
Wonderful venue and Robert Cray Band are absolutely awesome. dude holding the bass guitar was a bit odd though.
Robert's voice is in good form. His choice of songs is right on, Don't miss this act the next time he comes round.
Hoyt Sherman venue was amazing!! Concert was fantastic. Brought me back to my youth ❤️
Lots of talent. I appreciated the group. Blues is not my typical genre of music, but I enjoyed the show. I always like going to Hoyt-Sherman, not a bad seat in the house. Great acoustics. I really hated the bad manners of some of the audience. Several people behind me talked through a lot of the performance. There was another lady that kept screaming stuff. All in all a good experience. The group was very good.
Concert was fine and entertaining for the venue. Drink prices excessive.
Was very glad to see Robert Cray in person, and he is a great musician and blues man, but I was disappointed he didn't play 2 of his biggest hits....Smoking gun, and Nothing but a Woman, I know both of those songs have horns in them, and he did not have a horn section with him, but I think it could be played without the brass!
Robert Cray Band is not to be missed! Best blues ever! The bass guitarist, keyboard player and drummer were absolutely great, and I’ve never seen a talent like Robert Cray. The venue was wonderful…… This performance was a memorable experience!
Excellent concert. Robert Cray was at his best with guitar and voice. He could transform the guitar to exhibit emotions of the songs. He humored the audience with announcement there was a bat in the room and then Transylvania College was located in Lexington. The Opera House had excellent acoustics and showcased his talent to the fullest.
I have been a fan since the 80's. A dream concert for me! The man played his heart out!
An amazing performance by such a gifted guitarist. He was grateful to the audience for supporting him, and did an amazing job.. kudos to you at 70 Robert Cray
I’ve been a fan of Robert Cray since the early 80’s. Finally, I get to see him & the Robert Cray Band live! They did not disappoint ! I loved how they interacted with us ! Love, love the blues! I’m looking forward to the next time ! Thank you Robert Cray & your band for a fun evening !!
Wonderful performance by a deservedly legendary artist, supported buy outstanding side men. Loved every minute of it. The venue is great too, with excellent acoustics and generally good sight lines. We had a bad experience at first, though, as we had end seats in the second row of the first balcony with a badly obstructed view, due to the box right in front of them. Those tickets should never have been offered, or, if offered, clearly identified as "obstructed view."Luckily for us, though not for the artist or the venue, the entire rest of the row as empty, so we just moved down.
A true master….. always a great show, great seats
