The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

  • Robert Cray was everything my husband proclaimed!

by Butterflymdt on 7/17/09Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

I thought the show was AWEsome! The only reason I am giving it a 4 out of 5 stars is because the Birchmere is so blah! The place has zero personality, charm or romance. Thank goodness the artist makes up for that on stage. Robert Cray's voice is so grrreat! His bluesy songs, filled with hurt, sorrow, cheating, lying and sensual romps lusting for yesterdays love are easier to listen to against the backdrop of his slick sounding riffs played on the guitar with the bee bop of his drummers beats, the organ, piano and bass guitar. It all flows together like sweet molasses on a southern biscuit dripping with butter--scrumptious! Yes, I told my husband he and Robert were the puuurfect dates that titillated my soul.

One of the best shows I have ever seen his band put on.

  • Robert Cray at his Best!!

by jaynjoy on 7/13/09House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray played at his best tonight. I've seen him many times, including twice in Houston at other venues. I loved the closeness of the small venue at House of Blues. The House of Blues was clean, cool & comfortable which made the concert that much more enjoyable!

  • Cray is the man

by rex77 on 7/13/09House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 4 out of 5

Robert is one of the best guitar players around. He is even better live. The HOB was a nice setting not a bad view on the lower level. the upper level has the nice seating but many bad angles.

  • One of the Best!

by Earnestine on 7/13/09House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Performance was great! Finally I have gotten to see Robert Cray in concert and it was well worth the wait. Being able to stand right in front of the stage at the House of Blues was the best seat I could of gotten eventhough we purchased balcony seats which were horrible ( they were so far away from the performer) In the future I will purchase General admission seat! Robert Cray just want I wanted to here! It was just great to finally get to see him perform!

  • Robert Cray still does it

by Funkyredneck on 7/13/09House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Great show, some old, some new. New tunes very well done and still have the Robert Cray feel. Old songs still relevant and still feel new. Great band and overall performance.

Absolutely fantastic show!! I saw Robert Cray about 10 years ago. He was great then and certainly no disappointment now. The audience interaction was great and his band really rocked. I will never forget the piano player. WOW!!!!!! Awesome show......it really rocked.

  • The Robert Cray Band was full of soul!

by SeabrookSoul on 7/13/09House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first time hearing the band. I was impressed with the quality of music and rotation of guitars by Robert Cray and the Base guitarist. The music was soulful, uplifting and fun. I would see them again.

house of blues show in houston saturday night july 11 was one of the best shows I have ever seen.I have been going to concerts for more than thirty years and have seen lots of good shows. This one ranks up at the top. His guitar work and overall showmanship is something to behold. You can tell he really enjoy playing the music and not just going through motions. If this man and his band are coming to your town , do not miss them you will not be disappointed.

  • Robert Cray is always good.

by Pretender on 7/9/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 3 out of 5

Robert Cray was very good. The opening band was marginal. We were disappointed that this was not a guarunteed seat event.

  • Flawless Show

by OneintheMiddle on 7/9/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

I am a seasoned Cray fan & was not disappointed by the Cray band's performance. Mr. Cray once again proved that his seemingly effortless playing is beautiful & perfection. I was a little disappointed that the "band" guys weren't altogether--but it's not a criticism of the fellas playing with him that nite--they were great. I'm an entertainment writer in an Indiana city & the only complaint I have is I would've appreciated some input from a manager or publicist on how to contact the band to interview for the August CD release. I've been emailing for awhile & never get a response & no one was helpful after the show either. Robert Cray will always be an incredible musician & I want more people to enjoy his talents.

  • Robert Cray was unreal!!!

    by tattooedJ66 on 7/9/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

The show started off with a bang. The opening act Impala Deluxe a local band from St.Louis was very good. They had a tight sound and the guitar player was great. Then Robert Cray came out and did not let the crowd down. He sounds just like his recorded music does. He kept the crowd rocking all night long. Also liked the non-smoking inside the Pageant. Great night all together.

  • He was one with his guitar

by dominoqueen on 7/9/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

He was definitely one with his guitar, his band and the audience. He played to the soul. Always a performer that makes you smile.

  • Robert Cray was superb!

    by TAD1 on 7/8/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

My wife and I have been RC fans for a long time. He and the band did not disappoint us. Their mix of old with the new (which we are looking forward to hearing more of) made the night unforgettable. RC's voice is unmistakeable and always will be and his sharing of the spotlight is so typical - that's why he has a loyal fan base. We were disappointed in the opening act who weren't that bad until the last song (which lasted way to long...and featured a blend of Johnny Cash songs - disappointing). RC was terrific and the Pageant rocked!

  • Robert Cray at teh Pagent

by Halkat on 7/8/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

First and foremost Robert and the band rocked, been waiting a long time to see him and now we have and it was great. Robert Cray made up for that though and he is truly a guitar genius, almost as the guitar is a third arm. Hope to see him and his band back here very very soon.

  • Robert Cray rocked the house

by McDowns on 7/8/09The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

His voice was pitch perfect and the band was superb, i wish it hadn't ended

  • Robert Cray Band - Never Disappoints!

RCB was everything I expected and more! I love watching these guys, especially RC himself, amazing guitarist (to say the absolute least) great entertainer, with the most fabulous live vocals!
