The Robert Cray Band in Concert
When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.
Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.
The Robert Cray Band Background
Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.
Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

Robert Cray and his band played with passion and it showed. He is an incredibly talented blues guitarist with his own unique style that contributes in historical fashion to the genre of rhythm and blues. He is potent with his guitar rifts combined with his silky vocals. His interplay with the audience was appreciated. Don’t miss the opportunity to see him live. We are blessed with the longevity of some of the greats that still manage to hit the road for our listening pleasure. Robert Cray fits the bill. 5/5 stars.
The first time I saw Robert gray it was in 1987 and he was opening for Eric Clapton at the Capitol Center in Landover Maryland. This show may have been the best I have ever seen by him, and they have all been amazing. I'd go again tomorrow!!!
I have seen Robert Cray numerous times and he NEVER disappoints. He is a true American icon and under appreciated. The band is tight, his vocals as smooth as ever and his guitar playing is technically perfect and beautiful. He is an American treasure and I will continue to see him every chance I get.
He hasn't played our area in awhile enjoyed seeing Richard Cousins is still there. Sorry jum Pugh isn't but met him last year in the blues cruise and enjoyed talking with him. Time for Mr Cray to make his appearance there. Played a good mix of new music and older stings.
4 man band with Robert Clay excellent guitar playing was well worth seeing .Blues, rocking, music..Pkayed about 1.1/5 hr.s with 2song encore.Kinda loud but clear to hear singing.Enjoyed show.
Robert Cray and his band were awesome. I loved the way Robert enacted with his audience and his band members. The sound was crisp yet smooth and I loved every moment of it!
This is our 3rd time seeing Robert Cray, and we were blown away each time. This last show was extraordinary - the raw talent, how he makes his Strat sing is something you have to experience. Incredible.
I've been listening to Robert Cray Band since the 80's. Have many of his albums but never seen him live. This show was no disappointment. Band was tight and they genuinely seemed to be having fun while playing. Robert's voice was strong and his guitar playing was fabulous. The venue was great too.
Robert Cray is a phenomenal guitar player and vocalist. The BPCA venue is a great venue. Excellent acoustics and very comfortable seats. Plenty legroom but I was in the front row. The seating has plenty of legroom also .
Had a great time at this concert, great music and a very nice venue. I will go to that venue again
Robert Cray never disappoints and the band is tight! All excellent musicians and what a soulful, joyful performer is Robert Cray. The band was having as much fun as we were! If you have opportunity to see them do not hesitate, as they were great!
The venue was fantastic. Sound system was excellent. We sat in the pit with great seats. Mr. Craig is a virtue also on the guitar and his voice has a haunting sound in person. I’ve listened to him over the years and he sounds better at 72 than he did when he was in his 30s. To say that this gentleman is a fine wine would be an understatement. He has aged incredibly well. The show was energetic. The show was moving. The show was passionate. It was just a classic Robert Cray blues show.
Robert Cray sounds just as good as he did "back in the day"and his band was enjoyable and entertaining. The show was great--except they didn't play their biggest hit, "Smoking Gun"and that was a disappointment--but we were grateful for a 7:30-9 show and the venue was great. Comfortable seats, really friendly staff, cool old building. All good!
The seats were great, and the sound was perfect. Robert made the whole show a story by connecting the songs as the show went on.
Second year in a row seeing Robert. Unlike many of his peers, he still sounds like he did when I first heard him 40 years ago. Voice and guitar. Hope he comes back to little Bloomington IL next year!
Robert Cray and band were awesome and never missed a beat. We hope we can see them again . Our experience was.less than stellar, however, since a security person kept obscuring our view to make sure no one was recording. At one point, she flashed her phone light, almost blinded us by holding it sideways and then had to fumble around before turning it off. We have the same seats for another concert and if she is on our side of the theater, we're going to be very upset as she is Barney Fife personified.
Wish we had more room to dance!! Fun event all the way around!
Great concert at 72 robert stills sounds great. The Barrymore is a wonderful venue as well
We really enjoyed the concert. We had great seats and they put on a good show.
