‘Fizzing with freshness’ - BBC
‘Sunkissed psychedelia and irresistible hooks, with the band’s soul, funk and blues influences thrust joyously to the fore...‘- Guardian

Released in June 2014 via Earache Records, Great Western Valkyrie puts Rival Sons freewheeling fuzz and improvisational stage ethos to wax and cements their position as America’s next great rock’n’roll band. With a ‘conscious decision for this band to be just what it is’ (Jay Buchanan) this album is more cohesive than any Rival Sons album before.

From the beach cities of Southern California, the time was ripe for Rival Sons. Guitarist Scott Holiday had long been searching for something that would fit his psychedelic vision and fuzzy garage rock tones, then things fell into place when blues singer/songwriter Jay Buchanan put the solo career on the backburner and gave rock ‘n’ roll a chance.  Scott Holiday: ‘a random find on the Internet points me to Jay Buchanan. In 13 seconds I realize I have just come across the singer I've looked for over the last 10-12 years of my life.’
Jay was invited to record vocals on the band’s debut release ‘Before the fire’ ‘Singing On My Way in a single take. We never even ran tape a 2nd time. That was a first to witness for me. And so it was born... Rival Sons.’
Four albums on, with an ever-growing fan base the band go from strength to strength and have never looked back.

Emerging from a scene where over-production was commonplace, writing and recording in a hotbox of activity without prior discussion or preparation came to be what Rival Sons is about. ‘We have a reputation for recording our albums very quickly and keeping things very live - off the floor.’
As Holiday puts it after recording Before The Fire: ‘This is just the simplest way to not cheat ourselves or the listener. Rock and Roll can’t be over-thought, and if it is, it loses its immediacy and instinct … it needs to be a knife fight, not a choreographed knife dance’

The Rival Sons EP was recorded soon after Jay Buchanan joined the band and it caught the attention of Earache Records founder Digby Pearson who signed a deal in November 2010 that led to the recording of Pressure & Time in early 2011. The album was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Dave Cobb (who has worked on all Rival Sons albums) and released worldwide in May 2011. The band committed to creating an experience that closely matches the attitude and excitement of one of their live performances. Coming straight off a 4 week stint on the road, Rival Sons wrote, recorded, and mixed the album in just 20 days; ensuring a rawness for both the listener and the band; explains Buchanan, ‘in the code of the Samurai, any decision must be made between 3 and 5 breaths … writing by that code forces us to act, go with our instincts and really, truly listen to each other. Creatively, you’re bringing your most immediate instincts.’

Pressure & Time opened a door to Europe where from their first European show at Camden Barfly to Shepherds Bush Empire in 2012, there has hardly been a show that was not sold out. The band quickly picked up European shows and festivals and became known for a wild improvisational live show.

Jay Buchanan “Each one of us is coming at this thing we call a band for different reasons and with a very different approach. It's an unlikely collective really but when it all comes together there's an energy I don't see happening anywhere else. If rock'n'roll is our base form I would say, that transparent energy in our performance and solid writing are our highest functions as a band. Give everything you have, every time. Each time you approach that stage, every night, you're waiting for someone to call you out for the fraud you really are so you empty your pockets and give them everything you have inside of you just trying to prove that you've come there for a greater reason than just wanting to be the center of someone's attention. Music is fucking heavy business.”

Seeing the creative process as a snapshot, only spending less than a month in the studio for each album, writing and recording live under one roof to keeps the process raw but also grueling. Straight off the back of more touring early 2012 the band went into Honey Pye studios in Nashville in February 2012 for 22 days to write and record their new album again with Dave Cobb and Vance Powell (Jack White, Kings of Leon etc). Experimenting with old analog equipment from legendary studios that producer Dave Cobb had collected the band found a warmth in their sound for the album that would be Head Down.

With growing accolades and chart success the band were presented with “Breakthrough Artist” award by Vic Reeves at the Classic Rock awards at the end of 2012, they also graced the cover of the magazine as well as several other publications.

Between albums Rival Sons have a taxing tour schedule, original bassist Robin Everhart left the band in August 2013, finding that the touring life didn’t agree with him. Playing club shows, stadiums and festivals, the band convert new fans wherever they go. The band continued their touring schedule with long-time friend of the band Dave Beste (Maroon5, Rocco Deluca and The Burden) on bass, before returning to the studio in Nashville once again in Jan 2014 with producer Dave Cobb to record their 5th release ‘Great Western Valkyrie’.
“Opting to keep the sound in-tact and very accurate as to deliver to the listener exactly what was happening in the room when we put it down. We also felt a big desire to make a few left turns musically on this record - which we did. You will get the rock n roll…but on several tracks you get something much more hybrid.” – Scott Holiday

Called ‘A vital force in the modern age’ by The Guardian, Rival Sons often approach their music as if they were on a mission. Drummer Michael Miley: ‘We’re pushing the envelope of modern music; forcing it to stay awake and active through instinctive and honest music delivered with a blistering live performance’
‘In a ideal world, I want our records and live shows to envelop the listener to the level of forgetting daily worries. Just be free and lose (or FIND) yourself in the music.’ – Scott Holiday

Best sounding band LIVE I have ever seen

by BaRRaD0S on 10/10/14Brighton Music Hall - Boston

These guys put on an outstanding concert. The venue's acoustics helped a lot. I have seen many concerts in my lifetime, including big names like Iron Maiden, ACDC, Roger Water and more, but these guys my friends, are the best sounding band live I have ever seen. All the instruments together for their beautiful music and the vocals, are out of this world live. I bought tickets after seeing these guys on Paladia and was thoroughly impressed. I would recommend this band to anybody, I wish them the best!

    Rival Sons at the TLA

by Sheital on 10/8/14Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

If you have not heard Rival Sons yet, get your butt in gear. This is the best newer band to come around in a loooong time. They are somewhat of a second coming of Led Zepplin. I haven't heard a newer band this good since the original Stone Temple Pilots. The lead singer Jay is a great front man with an amazing voice and total stage presence. The guitar player Scott Holiday will rip your face off with his powerful sound. This band sounds much better live than on the recordings. The entire band is tight and they are all very talented musicians and singers. The venue was pretty cool. It's an old single screen movie theater. The front is standing room. I paid a few extra bucks and had VIP seats. whoo whoo, highfalutin lifestyle. VIP gets you in the area by the sound engineer in an area coralled off by a countertop. There are barstools for you high rollin lifestyle. It was actually pretty nice and I would spend the money again. This place is so intimate that there litterally is not a bad seat in the house. I will definately be back.

Concert was Awesome, but the venue didn't give us the signed posters as stated. Said they would contact me and company. Big doubts that will ever happen...

    See. This. Band.

by Ginojm on 10/7/14The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

Rock n roll is not dead, as evidenced by Rival Sons. You don't want to miss these guys. Buy their music, listen, and you will understand. Their live performance was super-high energy, raw, yet somehow polished. Jay Buchanan's vocals were spot on; he is one of the best out there right now. This band as a whole is the "real deal." If you like 90s rock, classic rock, or if you like bands like The Black Keys, Muse, Black Crowes, Guns n' Roses, etc. then you will thoroughly like this band. Again, go see this band. You will be blown away.

    Incredible show

by Rastaman714 on 10/6/14Irving Plaza - New York

How often do you see a band that you are almost completely unfamiliar with and you are captivated from the first song and smiling widely by the third? These guys are so tight, the singer so amazing and so great live that I felt like I was privileged to have been there. The 3rd song, SECRET was as good as it gets bringing me back to the 70's and Led Zep. Seriously, I thought to myself "this is what people must have felt seeing Zep for the first time in the 70's." Don't miss this show!!!

    Rival Sons ROCKED IT !!!

by BluesRock1973 on 10/5/14The Fillmore - San Francisco

By far the best rock concert I have ever been to! The Rival Sons rocked the house plain & simple. If you look up "Rock & Roll" in the dictionary, there should be an entry that says "see Rival Sons". The Fillmore is a smaller venue but that gets you closer to the band :) Reasonable tickets and merchandise but the drinks are a bit on the expensive side. If you haven't seen Rival Sons at a live concert, then you haven't really lived. Go now and buy your tickets. Go!

    Rival Sons have no rival

by Guitarmageddon on 9/28/14The Fillmore - San Francisco

Simply, Rival Sons is a fantastic band. Playing the historic Fillmore in San Francisco may have been the inspiration for putting on such a memorable show. I took my sister who never heard their music, she said, "that singer sings with his soul!" She really enjoyed the band. Wake up America, rock n rolls saviors have arrived.

    On Verge of Greatness

Rival Sons put on a great show and are on their way up... and I think think way up. Their set list could use a little tweaking but I was very impressed and will always look forward to seeing this band.

Best rock and roll band in MANY years!

by TJinCA on 9/25/14Belly Up Tavern - Solana Beach

I saw them in Solana Beach in San Diego last night. The singer is in his own world when he sings (in a good way). He is sort of in a trance. And man can he sing! He gives his all to every song, even at a small club like the Belly Up. The rest of the band fits this music style perfect (think Led Zep, Black Crowes, Trower, etc.). I am so happy to see a great rock and roll band that isn't overly produced and whose songs aren't all poppy sell-outs. If you like straight ahead hard rock and roll, you have to see them (and try to get as close to the stage as possible, to take in the world that singer Jay Buchanan is in and takes you into).

    Rival Sons Rule!!!

by WhipNYC on 7/5/14Mercury Lounge - New York

Awesome show! When you have a lead singer with a voice like that and a lead guitarist that can tear it up... you can get the crowd into right from the start and keep them until the end. It's a most see if you even "kind of" like one or two of their songs.

    RIVAL SONS HAVE NO RIVALS

by itsme1 on 6/29/14Gramercy Theatre - New York

This is an AMERICAN rock band in it's classic form. Like a fine built American muscle car there is no denying it's appeal, power or sheer awesomeness. It is a crying shame that they are much more popular abroad than here in their home country. Anyway, This was the second show in NYC and it ROCKED! The set last ,although heavy on their new LP The GREAT WESTERN VALKERY, was all killer no filler. This is the band's fourth LP and I believe their most cohesive one to date. they seem to be hitting their stride. The audience was filled with people that obviously had all to the LP's and brand new fans as well. I personally brought four people with me that had NO Idea what the band was about and now are Rival Sons fans. There are NO flash pots or lasers, just groove heavy rock and roll.It is about the music after all. Besides the rockers the band has many blues rooted power ballads. I am not talking Motley Crue's "home sweet home". Think more like Led Zeppelin's "Rain Song" or "Thank You" . These ballads are extremely well crafted works of art and often highlights of the show. The band (ten year veteran Road Warriors) are fronted by Jay Buchanan (probably the best singer you will ever see live) his vocals can shake your spine. I am a concert veteran and have seen many performers and this cat can sing! Next Scott Holiday lead guitarist and riff master. As the only guitarist he is quite busy but never misses a beat. He has an arsenal of catchy tasteful riff scattered throughout all the songs.Scott has a look and style all his own and always seems to be having a great time on stage. The drummer Mike Miley (the second front man) is in one word Unbelievable. Bonham like fills. Keith Moon like danger and chops that will stand up against anyone. A hard guy not to watch. New bassist Dave Beste helps keep the bottom firmly secured on this runaway train. Dave stepped into this role halfway through the tour for the last LP and he has fit right. NOT an easy task!!! In short, Thank You to the RIVAL SONS for giving the next generation a chance to see a YOUNG real ROCK BAND. Go see them, take your kids, take your friends and show them what rock and roll is supposed to sound like.
