Not the greatest show on earth...not even close!
In order to put a little context on this review, let me start by saying that I have loved the Ringling bro's for many years and have fond memories of going to the circus with my parents and now with my own children. I have spent many years of my life both as a supporter of the performing arts as well as an owner and promoter of live performing venues. In a nut shell this production billed as the greatest show on earth did not even come close to living up to its name. Gone are the three rings, that in my opinion majorly helped with the pacing of the show. Allowing the action to seamlessly flow from ring to ring with little interruption. They have been replaced with a single ring that seems almost clunky as they move from act to act. I heard that they may have eliminated the three rings in order to allow the audience to be closer to the action...? Well this brings me to my next issue with this particular rendition of the circus, where was all of the action? The circus is a place to be mesmerized by great performers both 2 legged and 4. The Flying trapeze has been replaced by a single woman on a swing and even the lion/tiger act has been replaced by a herd of poodles. This being said the dog act was the highlight of the night for my entire family, some of the most entertaining dog performers i have ever seen.. still not as cool as a lion though. All of this aside I think that this production would of been able to be salvaged if only they had a good clown act to tie it all together. Some of the most painful moments of this show were waiting for the clown duo to set up their jokes. I have always loved the clowns from Ringling and find them to be a crucial part of the show, both being great fillers between the other acts and exhibiting their great talents in the circus arts. This show has only two clowns in it and in my opinion their time on stage just added to the felling of the show dragging as they moved from act to act. All in all i think that if you have seen a circus in the past few years you have probably seen almost every act in this production, And I think that this is a major misstep of the production team over at Ringling. In a day in age where reality and virtual reality often run together, and amazing stunts are just a YouTube click away. The circus need to build bigger and brighter shows not smaller show. They need to continue to mesmerize us with things we have not seen before and inspire us by showing us a world where anything is possible. This show did just the opposite for my family they gave us a small show filled with things we had already seen in past years, making the statement that we have already done as much as we can so we will just keep recycling these old tired acts until people stop coming to see them.
To the Circus' credit we did see this show from a box that we have at the Moda center and I would say that this show may be best if seen close up. Although most of the seats in this venue are some distance from the ring. The pre-show and interactive things for the kids was fun as always but also seemed very reminiscent of past years at the circus.
This show Contained:
Trained Dogs (very good)
Elephants (only 2, with limited time in show)
Trapeze (one woman on swing)
2 clowns
Crossbow archer
motorcycles in tiny metal cage (Cool but same as past shows)
Horses and trick riders
Motorcycle on high wire ( not as cool as it sounds)
Uni-cycling basket ball team (good but kind of an odd venue for this)
Strong man ( balanced on those small platform things again to small of an act for the venue)
And I am sure there are things i am missing but they must not be memorable enough for me to recall.
Now that i have torn this show apart let me also state that there was nothing in this entire production that i myself could of done. That is not saying much but i always would like to give credit where it is due and know that there is no way that i would be able to preform even the easiest of acts from last night performance. These performers are talented professionals that all have amassing skills but have all been placed in a second rate production.
