About

This all-time classic opera tells the passionate tale of the father, the virgin, the lover and the curse. Rigoletto is a court jester, working for the Duke of Mantua. His job is to keep his master laughing and to divert attention from the Duke's many sins.  It is until, however, the Duke becomes interested in a young maid and unbeknownst to the Duke it is Rigoletto's daughter.   Rigoletto turns from spiteful joker into a protective and desperate father.
Rigoletto takes its inspiration from Federico Fellini's classic La Dolce Vita.
One of Australia's great Verdians, Michael Lewis, performs as the tragic clown Rigoletto, while Rosario La Spina and Emma Matthews join him in this powerful production.

    Rigoletto Review

by MexicoRaRa01 on 6/27/11Colony Theater - Miami Beach

What was good?: 1. The Actors 2. The voices 3. The music What was bad? 1. It started late 2. The translation was terrible synchronized 3. The translation screen appeared as a computer background twice in the middle of the play 4. The intermission was too long between acts (I have never seen this happened in another opera before) and continuity was lost.

    great show

by ejg528 on 6/27/11Colony Theater - Miami Beach

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this show. We were already familiar with Nelson Martinez, who played Rigoletto. We had pretty high expectations and they were all met or exceeded! What we didn't expect is for the rest of the cast to be so talented as well! A very nice surprise for me was having the English translations (subtitles) above the performance (I guess that makes them "supertitles" then!). I really enjoyed being able to follow the story (which I wasn't already familiar with) in addition to all of the great performing.

Great performance in such a small theater

by Anonymous on 6/26/11Colony Theater - Miami Beach

The performance was a great experience . We were very pleased, liked the unexpected incredible beautiful bass and soprano- Rigoletto and Gilda. The orchestra and the Lady- conductor contributed enormously to the success of the show.

    Rigoletto - a sublime performance

by imli on 11/8/10DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Attended the 11/6 evening performance of Rigoletto (my third performance) tho first time in orchestra seats 5th row. Orchestra gave a solid if not excellent performance. Overall a good job by the vocalists many of whom are new to their roles. The entire performance was held together by Mark Rucker who in my opinion is THE definitive Rigoletto. It remains one of my favorite operas not just because of it's many catchy tunes but it's psychologically complex plot reminiscent of Greek tragedy-that of a rotten man whose only reason to inspire empathy is the depth of his love for his daughter. A must see production for fans of Verdi's tragic masterpiece, mainly to hear the incomparable Rucker in the title role.

    Rigoletto and the Count Superb!!

by finjap1982 on 11/7/10DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Rigoletto and the Count gave us unforgettable performances with their superb vocal artistry and acting abilities. Unfortunately, the coloratura could not always be heard (and I sat in Row F) and was not up to the level of the two male leads. The opera chorus was excellent.

    SAO hits a home run

by babydoe on 7/1/10San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San Antonio

I am an opera lover and am a professional in the industry so I feel that I can accurately comment on this production. Daniel Sutin was an unforgettable Rigoletto - the best actor I have seen on the SAO stage. Audrey Luna as Gilda was flawless - best I have heard to date. Dana Beth Miller voice was strong and her character was saucy and sexy. The set was great! The opera was wise to use the falls rather than large, over extensive set as seen in past productions. The maestro and orchestra was wonderful (as usual). Sam Mungo was a a good director - he did not seem to overwork each scene and allowed the actors to rely on their own skills, rather than heavy blocking, to tell this tragic story!

World Class Opera in San Antonio

by CtCBM on 6/21/10San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San Antonio

Everything about this performance of Verdi's Opera Rigoletto was over the top. Soprano Audrey Elizabeth Luna was awesome, and I've heard Beverley Sills (my favorite coloratura soprano) in top form (c. 1970's) in many opera performances in the past. Everyone 'looked the part' of their character (especially Rigoletto and the Duke), and each of them did an outstanding job on stage, both vocally and theatrically. The sets and costumes were exceptional. This was unquestionably the best opera performance I've ever had the joy of attending. The only sad note was that the house wasn't packed, as so many people missed out in this world class production.

Rigoletto was a beautiful opera! Verdi's music was reproduced beautifully through the orchestra. It was truly amazing. The singing was incredible, what a talented group of performers! Beautiful sets, lighting and a great venue.

    A very good "Rigoletto"

by CapodiCapi on 6/20/10San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San Antonio

Despite the major acoustic and other theater design limitations of the barn called "Municipal Auditorium," the SA Opera put on a very good "Rigoletto." All performers were good. The orchestra did a great job, and I was particularly impressed with the men's chorus. The attendance was atrocious and I am sure a disappointment to the performers and the SA Opera management. Time of year and Municipal Auditorium itself may have played a role.

    Rigoletto

by JLD3 on 6/20/10San Antonio Municipal Auditorium - San Antonio

The Muscians and singers were wonderful. I would have enjoyed it more if the sound had been a bit better. Had trouble hearing the offstage singing, and the scenes at the end when Gilda was dying. Also, the temperature in the theatre was stiffling, made it hard to sit in close quarters. Can't wait until the reconstruction begins at the Municipal so that we can have a first class recital hall!!!

Performance was excellent. The settings were great but the performers were outstanding. Gilda (Audrey Elizabeth Luna) has an amazing, amazing voice!! I would love to hear her in other operas. Definitely an opera to see.

Portland Opera did Justice to a beautiful opera.

by Turandot on 7/17/09Keller Auditorium - Portland

I love the opera, from dirge to love song. The cast did a magnificent job. Gilda was vividly portrayed as a sheltered, guileless, beautiful creature. The title role of Rigoletto was also well done. You could hear his anguish and despair in every word, when he was not in his lovely daughter's presence. When they sang together, was when he lit up and you understood how even though he hated his job, he felt she was worth every indignity that was visited on him as a clown in a cad's court. I will definitely go again. Bravo!

    Perfect Night

by Elinor on 7/12/09Keller Auditorium - Portland

I'm rather a novice when it comes to opera, but have taken to the genre like the proverbial duck. From dinner at the lovely Carafe, where we enjoyed watching the patrons arrive from our sidewalk table, to the romance, humor and hummable tunes of Rigoletto, my boyfriend and I enjoyed ourselves tremendously. We'll be back.......and hopefully, I'll be sporting another great dress, which, I must admit, was part of the fun.

This cast of singers along with the orchestra and stagers did a masterful and professional job. The audience, along with us, was highly enthusiastic, appreciative and felt well-rewarded.
