    The ultimate Rickie concern

by soundrunner on 12/11/09Birchmere - Alexandria

This was the third time we saw Rickie and definitely the best. The Birchmere is a great venue for her, and she used it beautifully, playing with a small band that had great dynamic range, particularly down into the piano and pianissimo region. She really came to play and didn't seem to want to stop even at the end of the 2 1/2 hour show, when she finally bowed out saying that there would be diminishing returns if she played any longer. She played some beautiful numbers from her new album, Balm in Gilead, as well as some of her old faves, including Satellites, We Belong Together, etc. She also did a duet with the bassist on Autumn Leaves and a great solo rendition of Just Walk Away Renee, which we've only heard her do before on a Japanese import. In sum, she did everything we could have hoped for in a single concert, and did it all with energy and the same youthful voice she had twenty years ago. Fantastic!

    Rickie Lee Jones was forgettable

by Gusser on 12/11/09Birchmere - Alexandria

The entire concert was joyless and "dirge" like. Plus, Ms. Jones appeared bored to be there and did not interact well with the audience. I hope no one with suicide tendencies saw the concert.

    Memorable

by CrackedAces on 12/11/09Birchmere - Alexandria

I have always been a Rickie Lee Jones fan. But this show blew me away. The old standards were done as well as I have ever heard and Rickie's recent songs are wonderful. The band was great and all the musicians would do well on their own, but as a group they were fantastic. Three hours flew by and I was wishing the night could go on longer. Great show, great musicians and Rickie, well, it just doesn't get better than Rickie.

    RLJ is fantastic!

by Pooley29 on 12/7/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

I've seen her every time she's come to the greater Boston area, and she is always a treat. Her songs have touched many, so it's always great to see the crowd so supportive of her when she tours. This time, she played a lot of material from the new album "Balm in Gilead", which is superb. She's still got it! She also played a lot of older stuff. Last Chance Texaco, Pirates, Youngblood, Living it Up (an alternate version) and a few from her last album "Sermon". Overall, a great show, with a great supporting band. Don't miss her when she hits your town...

Rickie Lee Jones earns 3 standing ovations

by schnops on 12/7/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

Rickie Lee Jones came to boston and played a 2 hour and 20 minute show that was a complete joy. She was in great tone and her new album is filled with excellent music. She did the best songs from her debut album early in the show mixed with new songs from "Balm in Gilead". Her three band mates were excellent muscians, playing keyboards, accordion, mandolin, guitars, and stand-up electric base, and i believe even a harmonica. Rickie had her first standing ovation after Rodeo Girl and then went to the piano to play the great songs from Pirates which were some of the real highlights of the show for me. They played like they were in your living room and seemed to be improvising and making everything seem so personal, even adding in a Hank Williams and Lowell George tune for a remarkable set that I will remember for some time.

    RLJ w/ Rob Wasserman...AWESOME

by celebrat on 12/7/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

Rickie Lee was in great form last night. Played most if not all of new album Balm in Gilead. Best most approachable album since Flying Cowboys. Seems more spiritually centered these days. Daughter charlotte is 21 years old...Made me feel even older as someone who has been with RLJ since the beginning. Played for longer than i can remember in years and years. It was a real treat.

    Rickie is a great talent

by BarneysBlues on 12/7/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

Her voice hasn't aged a bit. She played with a cold, but it didn't seem to set back her performance or stage presence. The backing group was solid.

    Rickie Lee risks it all

by YvonneM on 12/7/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

What an incredible show last night! The small troupe and intimate venue was easily responsive to her alternately fragile and forceful voice. Playing songs from her new record, Ricki Lee shared all the poignant and provocative musings of her poetry, sometimes achingly sad, and sometimes funny, but always profound. Much of the generous show was played with guitar, mandolin, accordian and string bass creating such a beautiful sound with her voice and the feeling of redemptive grace, for new and old songs alike. It is thrilling to witness how she risks! -her emotions, her voice, her thoughts, her music. Throughout the show I felt honored to witness the beautiful human light before us, and just felt glad to be alive.

    What a show!

by danalyst on 12/7/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

The equipment arrived late. She had the sniffles. The stage was cold. The hall was half-full. But Rickie Lee came through, big time. Classic jazz/country/blues/pop songs delivered with nothing held back. Terrific backup musicians, including a prodigious 18-year-old multi-instrumentalist named Wyatt Stone (I think) and the famous bassist Rob Wasserman. What a show!

    was OK

by rickiefan on 10/26/09Bardavon Opera House - Poughkeepsie

The stage set up was weird with drummer up front, at one point Rickie on piano way in back. People around us talked through the whole concert. I slept through half of it. I had never been to her concerts before, not much of a performer, better off listening to a CD. I saw Cyndi Lauper and that was fantastic. Try to get her, civic center was packed, not like the 5/8 full theater for Rickie. Sorry Rickie....I was disappointed.

    okay

by Ashokan on 10/26/09Bardavon Opera House - Poughkeepsie

I love Rickie Lee but this performance was a little on the unrehearsed side. I've seen her many times and she is a wonderful performer. I think she just didn't have much practice time with the band. Kind of sloppy.

Ricki Lee Jones Transcendent and Continuously New

by Anonymous on 10/25/09Bardavon Opera House - Poughkeepsie

She is clear, multiple; and her range: intellectual, vocal, instrumental, only increases with age. She is a treasure that is probably way undervalued but, on the other hand, that is why I get to see her in beautiful and acoustically rich opera houses in small cities. Her work will ultimately speak for itself. The new songs and versions from Balm in Gilead are fantastic. And her persona is pure delight. She dusted off the guitar and her memory to pluck the cords for a light and sweet rendering of Chuck E's In Love, and offered it as a mischievous gift for the first encore. Then a nearly heart breaking version of a song by her father.
