RICHARD CLAYDERMAN IS A PHENOMENON
The French pianist, now in his sixties, has sold more than 150 million records and helped create a new genre of “popular classical” music. He also became an unlikely pin-up during the '80s, courtesy of soft-focus television commercials for his albums that emphasised his angelic good looksand wonderful hair.
"Some people say that my music is 'elevator music'", reveals the 61-year-old musician. "This is their way to make clear that they consider it as a secondary music, a low level music. In fact, it is neither jazz nor classical. It is a kind of soft pop music that appeals to millions of people on the five continents."
For all his achievements, Clayderman's life has been tinged with bittersweet moments. Through his years of success he was entangled in a number of unsuccessful romances which belied his cherub-next-door image.
"My father's wish was that I become a piano accompanist. He would never have hoped that I become what I am today. No doubt he would have been very proud. I regret that he passed away a few months before [my career took off]. I still remember when Olivier Toussaint offered me the opportunity to record 'Ballade pour Adeline'," Clayderman recalls.
"He said, 'Let's do this recording for the pleasure, not to expect that it sells more than 10,000 copies. Honestly, neither he nor I could imagine that it would sell more than 20 million copies and that it would open the door to my career with the fantastic opportunity to record more than 1000 titles and to perform more than 2000 concerts over the past 35 years."
POPULAR MUSIC
Clayderman understands that the classical world can be snobbish towards those who sell millions of records. It isn't really his world. He doesn't play for elitists but rather for ordinary people. He is an entertainer, not an upholder of musical traditions stretching back decades."It is true that I attended classical music conservatory and had a classical education before deciding not to devote my life to classical music. My classic studies are the essential base to what I do today. I often say and shall always say that I am not a classical pianist. I am a popular pianist. In France we say 'pianiste de varktes'."

I have been a fan for @ 40 years and have wanted to see him n concert for all that time. The experience was as fabulous as I anticipated it would be. He truly created a magical musical evening.
people can enter in or out anytime while the performance is on. it is kind of music event at park.
Richard Clayderman is a talented Pianist but pales in comparison to Ferante & Teicher that I saw years ago. His canned accompaniment detracted from the concert. He also was accompanied by 4 local musicians but due to the heavy reliance on recorded accompaniment it was not always easy to tell if the local musicians were really playing or faking it. I would not go back to see him again, but he is talented. In contrast I saw Johnny Rivers last year at the same venue and I am going again to hear him this year. Yes the music is different but I don't like paying to watch musicians act like they are playing when they may not be playing. The rest of the crowd seemed to enjoy the concert.
It was a Great Experience!!! Nice place and awesome service
It is pretty exciting to see the person in person who used to appear in MP3 player rolling titles.
Very good show. Lots of humor. I thought the prerecorded backing track spoiled the music. In my mind a live drummer would have added to the show.
The best concert in Houston, motivated the kids to learn piano, wish he would come back sometime later.
Great but concessions were not good, we need more variety
The Clayderman show itself was terrific! However, the stage at Arena Theater normally rotates so that everyone gets a chance to see the “front” of the performance. Unless I just missed it during ticket purchase, there was no indication that the stage would be stationary during the performance. Unfortunately, the tickets we purchased gave us seats where our view of the performance was entirely from the rear of the performance. Had I known, I would have sought different tickets so we could have “seen” the show. Miffed!
Splendid lights, background video, a great pianist, Richard Clayderman, wonderful music, unforgettable night with full house audience!
I was expecting to hear him play most of the piano melodies that made me a big fan of him. But somehow the concert turned into a kids' show. Children running towards the stage after every performance. I wanted to leave in the middle of the concert, but i had invited a friend to come with me, so i stayed throughout the concert. Had i known how the concert was going to be, i would have bought cheaper tickets, instead of the front row tickets i bought.
I love Richard Clayderman music since I was a teenager. This is my first time attending his concert. However, this concert completely shattered my dream for him as a pianist. The stage setup was weird with the piano in the backdrop. The mixer of the 100% orchestral accompaniment had completely destroyed the taste of his piano music; I have been longing to see at least one of his piano songs in solo performance, and it did not occur. It was such a regretful performance. He does not deserved to be claimed as a pianist because there was no advance technique displayed in his piano playing at all. I would not want to see his show ever again.
Richard Clayderman is the BEST!! So glad to get to see him playing in Boston.
While Richard Clayderman is a highly talented pianist, his show is lacking a full orchestra. Playing along with recorded material does not cut it. Step up, bring in the full orchestra and increase the price of the tickets. Respectfully, Charles Pluim
The show was at a very amateur level, unfortunately. Sound was very unbalanced and the production for a performer of Clayderman's fame was very sub standard. Also, on several occasions, he was playing along to his recordings. You could hear two pianos playing at once! Although they had 10 string players onstage, they were pretty much there for show. There is no question that Clayderman has made a contribution to simplistic and beautiful music as his album sales have shown, but this show was not anywhere near the level it should have been for a pianist who has sold 100 million records. Maybe this was the first show of the tour and they will address these issues.
We really enjoyed the Richard Clayderman show. The music was amazing! Richard has a great sense of humor and made the show very lively, fun and entertaining. We would love to see him again next time he comes to the Bay Area.
Amazing evening, so gracious and engaging with the crowd. A gem that hopefully will come back again to SJ!
Great experience! Glad to meet my childhood idol in San Jose.
It was an amazing concert. Richard Clayderman was very talented and humorous.
