Terrible Audio Problems and Audio Tech Didn't Care
by ExperiencedStageTechGuy on 10/22/17Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisI have worked on and off in the performing arts industry as a stage manager, technician, and technical manager/supervisor. This show was nothing short of a nightmare audio-wise this night. The entire time Red-Green's mic was cutting out, which is literally the WHOLE show. No back-up was on his person for him to switch to. No back up was given during intermission. No handheld was even offered until the final few minutes of the show when you absolutely didn't come through at all. This is totally unacceptable and unprofessional, especially when his extended monologue is the entire show. If I were the producer of this or tech director and I attended this show, I would have fired this guy on the spot. Secondly, the ticket prices didn't match what the audience received. The only real set that this show had was a projection screen, an under-capable projector, and a podium. They hard sold the merchandise but didn't really provide anything of value to the audience. The entire show consisted of a slide show, a few short clips of the Red Green show, and Red Green talking the entire time. The only positive thing I can take away from this show is that Red Green himself, ALWAYS remained in character and professional the entire time. He did an excellent job executing a one-man show. However, everything that surrounded him, might as well throw most of it in the trash and hire some better creative people to create a real show that matches the ticket prices OR charge about half as much. This show was a money hog from the lack of technical aspect going into it and the hard merchandise pushing. Speaking to the venue itself, the Pantages Theatre, it is a wonderful venue. It is small and sight-lines are very good, both in the orchestra and balcony. You'd be hard pressed to find a bad seat. The staff was very friendly and attentive.
