About

Randy Newman in Concert

With songs that run the gamut from heartbreaking to satirical and a host of unforgettable film scores, Randy Newman has used his many talents to create musical masterpieces widely recognized by generations of audiences.

After starting his songwriting career as a teenager, Newman launched into recording as a singer and pianist in 1968 with his self-titled album Randy Newman. Throughout the 1970s he released several other acclaimed albums such as: 12 Songs, Sail Away, and Good Old Boys. In addition to his solo recordings and regular international touring, Newman began composing and scoring for films in the 1980s. The list of movies he has worked on since then includes The Natural, Awakenings, Ragtime, all three Toy Story pictures, Seabiscuit, James and the Giant Peach, A Bug’s Life, and most recently, Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University, the prequel to Monsters Inc. (which he also scored).

The highly praised 2008 Harps and Angels was Newman’s first album of new material since 1999. The Austin Chronicle wrote “the characters are memorable, the satire sharp, the music luxurious, and the arrangements maybe the most gorgeous in all pop music.”

The Randy Newman Songbook Vol. 2, which is the second in a series of new solo piano/vocal recordings of his songs spanning his five-decades, was released in 2011. Time Out New York said of the series, which will receive a third volume soon, “The Songbook records strip away the orchestrations of his regular albums, leaving Newman alone at the piano, singing...three-minute masterpieces from throughout a half-century career.”

That same year, Nonesuch Records released a live CD and DVD recorded at London’s intimate LSO St. Luke’s, an 18th-century Anglican church that has been restored by the London Symphony Orchestra, where he was accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Robert Ziegler. The 22-song set features some of his best-known songs like “Short People,” “Louisiana 1927,” and “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today,” as well as newer songs such as “A Few Words in Defense of Our Country” and “Laugh and Be Happy.”

Randy Newman’s many honors include six Grammys, three Emmys, and two Academy Awards, as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013—the same year he was given an Ivor Novello PRS for Music Special International Award. Mostly recently, Newman was presented with a PEN New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award in June 2014.

    Randy Newman in Atlanta

by RandyNewman on 11/21/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

It was just Randy and his piano. He played songs from back in the '70's through songs from his current album Dark Matter. For Randy fans, it was a memorable trip through time with an incredible songwriter. I was worried about him, though, because he's put on weight and he doesn't look so good. I hope he hires a personal trainer and nutritionist--we need him around much longer!

    Rare form

by Tbreland on 11/21/17Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

Randy Newman continues to surprise me with every new show. He's not a flashy performer - the show is just a man and a piano. But the worlds created by this master craftsman make the lack of flash largely irrelevant. He intersperses the show with stories that sparkle with his self-deprecating wit. For two and a half hours, he wandered through his entire catalog, sharing stories about the songs and his process. His voice, of course, is not for everybody. But for the fans who have appreciated him for so long, he did not disappoint. I can't wait for the next show.

Excellent show, so glad I got to see him live after all these years. Great set list, he plays tons of songs old and new. He's funny and piano playing and voice are as strong as ever. Played about an hour and 45 minutes not counting a 20 minute intermission. Highly recommend the show!

    In the presence of greatness

by Wowism on 11/12/17Carolina Theatre - Durham

Randy Newman's body of work is vast through subject and time. To be at his performance, especially in light of the title song of Dark Matter set in Durm, had a special resonance. Masterful!

    Randy Newman Beyond Expectations

by Jamindragon on 11/12/17Carolina Theatre - Durham

The show was in a great venue, Carolina Theater, Durham, NC. He played much longer than expected and played everything everyone wanted to hear. At 74 he still has it and puts on a show not to be missed by fans. His interaction with the audience was perfect, even took some requests. I can't recommend seeing him enough. Do yourself a big favor, if you like fun and excellent showmanship, music, and songwriting - GO SEE this man!

An engaging evening with Randy Newman

by NotJohnnyDepp on 11/12/17Carolina Theatre - Durham

It's been a couple of decades since I last saw Randy Newman in concert and wasn't sure what to expect. He is 74 after all, has nothing to prove to anyone, and could be excused for almost phoning it in with a quick sampling of his favorite tunes. To my delight, and to the delight of the rest of the crowd at the Carolina Theater in Durham, he was in good voice, did a thorough review of his musical career, and played for a little more than two hours. He told jokes, related stories from his personal life, bantered with the audience, and did several audience singalongs, including an new song titled "I'm Dead (But I Don't Know It)", about a over-the-hill rocker who is still on the road well past when he should have retired. Randy is a national treasure and this show was one that I will recall as a favorite. As usual, the Carolina Theater was a joy and the staff friendly and helpful. Sound was very good after a little adjustment during the first two songs. This venue never fails to deliver.

The finest entertainer alive, for fifty years now.

by R1I8CC on 10/9/17Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

I have been listening to Randy Newman's music since I was a teenager, and I'm 68 now, so that's 50 years. His songs are masterpieces. Each one vividly describes a character, or a location, or a feeling, or each one tells an interesting story: and all in about three minutes. He is the only person in the entire world of entertainment with whom I identify. He is so funny, and so smart, so talented, so perceptive: I could go on. His latest album is not great. He did do a large number of old songs that I love, which was wonderful. His age is showing now: he's 74, and going on tour must be a real hard challenge. But he rises to it, and works very hard on stage. His voice is deteriorating, but for us it really doesn't matter. We still laugh when he sings "You can leave your hat on." He is like no one else. I hope that he is still touring when he's in his late eighties. I love him.

Enjoyed it, but more energy was needed

by Napabob on 10/9/17Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

A one man effort, no warm up act, no support musician's, just Randy, his piano, and the audience. Glad we got to see him "live" but another sound to break up his "style" wouldn't hurt.

Randy Newman's lyrics, music, and style manage to express important and controversial ideas with elegance and wit. Many of the songs he performed are more poignant now than ever.

The Most Interesting Man in the World

by thecommissioner on 9/22/17Birchmere - Alexandria

No, it is not the Dos Equis Guy. After watching his concert at the Birchmere the other night, there is no doubt in my mind that the most interesting man in the world is Randy Newman. Now, Randy is not cut from the same cloth of most of my musical icons. He is not a rock ‘n roller. In fact, he is hard to define, which is part of what makes him so interesting. There is some gospel, some blues, some ragtime, some ballads, and movie soundtracks. There’s irony, satire and pain, all sung with a so-so voice. But the stories and the lyrics are something else. From the brutal put-down of bigots in “Short People” (you’ve got to love the lines: “They got little baby legs; And they stand so low; You got to pick ‘em up; Just to say hello”) and the satirically romantic ode to Cleveland and its burning Cuyahoga River in “Burn On”, to the frighteningly prescient political solution offered up in 1972 in “Political Science” that was part of our Moron-in-Chief’s speech to the United Nations in 2017 (“No one likes us; I don’t know why; We may not be perfect; But heaven knows we try; But all around; Even our old friends put us down; Let’s drop the big one; And see what happens”) and the abject pain of a father for his estranged son in “Wandering Boy”, he kept the audience engaged and on its toes. And his takes on Putin and Jack and Bobby Kennedy are brilliant. It is hard to reconcile the artist who wrote those songs with the one who can also write terrific songs for Pixar movies. You just never know what you’re going to get with a Randy Newman song. Fortunately, you do know what you’re going to get with a Randy Newman concert. Randy and a grand piano, a great songbook, engaging stories, and the opportunity to spend a couple of hours with the most interesting man in the world.

One of the best songwriters of our time.

by billcuz on 9/22/17Birchmere - Alexandria

One piano, two hands, ten fingers, one voice, and a very, very singular experience. Newman sang the great American songs you've heard and a bunch you haven't. Stunning. He didn't talk very much, but he explained a lot, with teasing, mostly funny bits and pieces of stories, some autobiographical, followed by songs that show how a genius turns an image, a character, a short vignette into a song that speaks of worlds. Can't say enough good about it. As a technician, his singing was never much, and his piano playing may have lost a few steps, but his harmonic sense, his storyteller's instincts, and those songs were all that and a bag of chips. Salt and crunch and just enough to be more than you could have hoped for.
