Rancid on Tour

Those who say that Rancid are the closest thing modern punk fans have to the Clash aren't far off: Since forming in 1991, the Berkeley band have churned out album after album of galvanizing punk music tinted with 2-tone ska, rockabilly-inflected hardcore and dub reggae. Unsurprisingly, Rancid's raucous, ebullient live shows have also helped the group cultivate a loyal fan base. Tim Armstrong's gruff vocals and the band's thrashing guitars are a throwback to punk's most rebellious days, while their no-frills, hit-packed sets spawn an abundance of fist pumps and mosh pits - with Armstrong even occasionally jumping into the crowd.

Rancid's commitment to making their tours special has also made them a reliable live draw. In 2017, they performed at Lollapalooza in Sao Paulo and also teamed up with fellow rabble-rousers Dropkick Murphys for the From Boston to Berkeley tour. In 2019, Rancid headlined the Bash Festival, a traveling tour that combined craft beer and music, and a separate road show bringing together fellow punk lifers Pennywise and a variety of openers, including hardcore legends Suicidal Tendencies, ska-punk icons The English Beat and up-and-comers Turnstile.

Rancid in Concert

Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman were both members of the beloved defunct Bay Area ska-punk band Operation Ivy. They initially launched Rancid as a trio, however, after second guitarist Lars Frederiksen joined starting with 1994's gold-selling Let's Go, which spawned the modern rock hit "Salvation." Rancid went platinum and landed on MTV with 1995's ...And Out Come the Wolves, courtesy of the life-affirming punk anthem "Ruby Soho," brisk ska jam "Time Bomb" and gritty "Roots Radicals," and they continued to connect well into the 2000s, including on the 2003 alternative favorite "Fall Back Down." In the decades since, Rancid has grown into one of the most consistent bands around, with 2017's Trouble Maker especially demonstrating that the band aren't mellowing with age.

    Perfect.

Go see Rancid. Whatever it takes, no matter how far you have to travel. Go by yourself if you have to because once you’re there, you won’t be alone. There is no other unity like the Rancid Punx. Go see Rancid.

Great view doesn’t make up for terrible sound.

by Mike on 9/24/19MECU Pavilion - Baltimore

Had orchestra pit tickets but also spent time on the lawn. Sound quality was horrible in both places. You can probably hear just as well sitting on the bricks across the water. Also the lighting guys seemed to be blinding the band with the spots, so much that they borrowed a baseball cap from the merch booth. I’ll drive to Philly or DC rather than go back to this place.

    Acoustics were terrible

by Kiki on 9/21/19REBEL - Toronto

Whoever was in charge of mic’s missed the mark. You could barely hear the vocals for the English beat. The first 2 Pennywise songs the lead singers mic wasn’t working and when Rancid was on you couldn’t really hear the guitar.

When I headed out from Ottawa to see the show in Toronto I knew I'd be in for a long day when I got to the show the energy from the people I meet and the lake front venu gave me a secound wind. When rancid come on stage the sold out show went wild and again the energy in the room went throw the roof. I could see rancid every week and never get tired of them if your a punk fan and never seen them I wouldn't highly Segest you do. See you in the pit!

Omg, where to begin?!?!?!!! Been a huge fan of Rancid for years! 1st time at their concert. They were incredible! Sound just as good now as when I first started listening to them! Then to the Dropkick-you guys played all my favs. My husband is 100% Irish, born there and immigrated here as a kid. He turned me on to your music along with traditional Irish music. You guys were great!

    Back to my roots

by Punkrock80 on 8/28/17Downtown Las Vegas Events Center - Las Vegas

As I get older I forget what drew me to punk rock music in my youth... this show was a nice reminder! The energy was there Selecter, Rancid and DKM were on point!!!! Loved the set lists and the crowds. My only real complaint was security at the venue. They wouldn't let my 14-year-old daughter in with her flat "spiked" bracelets. To say they were even spiked is a stretch and the policy was was not consistent. It really depended on which security guard you happen to get.... and lets be honest, this is supposed to be a punk rock show.... you're going to get spiked accessories on most of the patrons. C'mon guys.... is this really the battle you won't to pick?!

Superb Selecter, great Rancid, lousy venue

    by jmy67 on 8/26/17Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

After the pleasant forgettable opening act Kevin Seconds, 2 Tone ska legends The Selecter tore the roof off the place (ok, the place already had no roof but still). I admired the fact that Pauline and the gang didn't shy away from their newer material either--Frontline sounded as fresh and relevant as anything else they played and Pauline dedicated it to Heather Heyer for standing up to Trump's neo-Nazis. Dropkick Murphys were forgettable despite some fanatical/drunk portion of the audience fan base. With open seating, I just got up from my concrete seat and stretched during their set. The last two songs were alright. Finally Rancid were amazing, grateful to the audience for their career and more than once paid homage to the great Selecter. Rancid's message of equality and inclusion for all was very moving. As for the venue, it's supposed to be non-smoking but was nothing but cigarettes and pot everywhere. I don't care if it's Berkeley, if it's supposed to be non-smoking, do something about it. Not everyone wants to smoke or smell that or smell like it afterward. Never again, especially with the joy of $20 parking nearby.

    Still as amazing as ever!

by Meyerlemon on 8/24/17Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Both Rancid, whom I have seen at least three times before, and Dropkick Murphy's, whom I was seeing live for the first time, were amazing. How can they keep giving such fantastic performances after all these years. And I love the Greek Theater. It is a large venue that feels intimate.

Rancid/DKM best show ever, i can die now

by Eastbaypunk on 8/23/17Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Took my 15yr old girl, she's heard me listen to both bands but not a "fan" per say. She loved DKM but had to have Rancid tour shirt because we're east bay area born and raised. For me, I could see this tour every night for a year, it was perfectly executed, tight and just plain badass. They now have another generation of fans because baby girl will influence her friends lol

    Amazing Show

    by monkey5 on 8/23/17Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Dropkick Murphys and Rancid put on an awesome show. As a long time Rancid fan and Bay Area native, seeing them at the Greek was a real treat. I loved the encore with both bands playing covers of classic songs by Johnny Cash and the Ramones, so much fun.

Rancid and Dropkick Murphys were both superb

by BelGal on 8/23/17Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Rancid and Dropkick Murphys were both superb, both sounded great and got the crowd engaged. The Rancid fans in particular were fantastic to see, the entire crowd singing every lyric. They made the event even better.

    EPICCCCC

by Hashtagpunk on 8/23/17Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

My first time seeing Rancid and my 2nd seeing Dropkick. 2 of my favorite bands in one bada** show! The Selecter killed it also! Those fools have been rocking out since the 70s! Unfortunately, I missed the first act due to trying to stuff my face with pizza and beer outside the venue but I'm sure he jammed out! Was also my first time at the Greek in berkeley. what an awesome, friendly venue! Can't wait to see another show there. Security was fun and easygoing, helping crowdsurfers to safety. I wish there had been more merch stands as the line was ridiculous so I chose to watch the show and miss out on a shirt. If you are a rancid/dropkick fan or even a punk fan, do yourself a favor and see these legends live!

by sillensteve on 8/23/17Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

One of the best shows I have ever seen. Dropkick murphys are unbelievable Rancid was very good but no one can follow the Murphys. Opening act Selekter was outstanding would go see them again when they headline the show.
