Procol Harum, the 60's and 70's standard bearer for Prog Rock or Symphonic Rock, was powerful, moving and exhibited their vast musical talent in Atlanta on July 20, 2014. The setting, at the Atlanta Symphony Hall, was perfect for their style of music. Singer, leader, keyboardist, pianist Gary Brooker, has lost none of his incredible voice. The song selection, from the opening off Grand Hotel, to the final three songs Simple Sister, Whiter Shade of Pale, and Conquistador, explored the wide catalog of Procol Harum's music, and performed it masterfully. Gary Brooker's stage banter, from stories about dinner in the Kremlin, private jets and limos in the past, and the present fare of buses and Popeyes in current times, was humorous and entertaining. A supporting band that was talented and tight, performed the music with style and passion.
So why was this event only attended by maybe 800 to 1000 in the audience in a venue that could hold 3000-4000? (We were moved from the upper balcony to Row K in the orchestra.) I'm mystified on that fact. Insufficient publicity? No marketing? I actually traveled from Fort Lauderdale to see this epic (along with a Marlins/Braves game and a side trip to Savannah) when I saw the event online. While the average age of attendees was over 50, I was disappointed by the turnout. Surely even those only familiar with Whiter Shade of Pale, the only song to get current radio play, should have been curious. Baby boom -- Where have you gone?
