Christine Lahti is better than this!

by AGEEZER on 11/12/13Signature Theatre - Arlington

Homophobia, adultery, incest, bulimia, racism, narcissism, repressed rage and "Southern charm" are all squeezed into this play that really seemed beneath the likes of Christine Lahti. Folding chairs on wooden bleachers for $98 bucks each would be fine if the performance was worth it. Unfortunately, not this time.

    Upstream

by Wittgenstein on 11/10/13Signature Theatre - Arlington

Though the story line is not terribly original, the author, director and actors make your time well worth seeing Autrey Mill. Christine Lahti remains an excellent actress, with impeccable timing, whether delivering a zinger or expressing her confusion at the changed circumstances of her family. While it seems initially that the biggest moment of the play occurs in the first scene when her son "comes out of the closet" to her ("Don't tell Dad") in fact, as the play moves forward with a good but not frenetic pace, that seems a mere eddy in the rapids of the family's life.

    Terrible play

by supernumerary on 11/5/13Signature Theatre - Arlington

This play was awful. And we paid a lot of money for tickets - We went because of the talent - Christine Lahti and Michael Kahn - that went into this play. Wow, what a combination we thought. Had to be a great production. How wrong we were. The play was shallow, the characters totally unlikeable and the plot absurd. Add to this an offensive and perverted subplot about the brothers' relationship. Cannot figure out why this play ever got the green light from Signature.

Pride in the Falls falls short

by RusticRufus on 11/5/13Signature Theatre - Arlington

The acting and staging of the play were very good, but the subject matter was a bit hackneyed for this point in time. Felt like I was back in Tennessee Williams' era where these types of relationships have already been over-explored. The play did not cut any new ground for sure. The context of the community in which Pride in the Falls is set was not used to great advantage, which would have given the play more of an edge. Lahti and Duvall were standouts and did the best they could with what they had to work with.

    Wonderful Acting!

by Ratatooie on 10/30/13Signature Theatre - Arlington

I thought the acting was excellent and it was thoroughly enjoyable in an intimate setting. Most of the material worked very well and was quite funny and poignant at times, yet I felt the playwright tried to do too much. This is one case where less would have been more. Didn't understand the subplot about the brother's relationship - never developed and would have been better left out. Note to director - use real flowers! The acting was superb and the play was technically sound. Enjoyed it very much!

    Autrey Mill was great!

by Buckies on 10/30/13Signature Theatre - Arlington

Christine Lahti led a terrific cast in this production. The acting was excellent all the way around. The Dad was the sleeper....very good and real. Unfortunately, this family scenario is all too real, but it was portrayed with humor and pathos.

    Stellar cast, mediocre material

by Raftmaster on 10/29/13Signature Theatre - Arlington

This all too predictable play could have been lifted from network TV, appropriate since the star is Christine Lahti who has a stellar television background. Her portrayal of a southern wife obsessed with external appearances is more than convincing. She is well matched with a cast of lesser-known actors who play her two sons, each struggling to garner attention in his own way and her wayward husband who is about to walk away from the troubled relationships that are his family's fate. Well directed and well acted, this play simply doesn't go anywhere unexpected (unless you count a grown man urinating on himself as normal.) See it for Ms. Lahti's star turn but don't expect to be emotionally involved. There's simply not enough depth in the script to draw in the audience.

Great script brought to life by excellent cast

by Inkadink on 10/27/13Signature Theatre - Arlington

Very challenging roles were performed in a way that totally involved me from start to finish. Christine Lahti and the entire ensemble had a chemistry that worked to create both laughter and tears. They had the audience with them throughout and made this an unforgettable experience. Loved it.

Pride in the Falls of Autrey Mill - Brilliant

by Anonymous on 10/25/13Signature Theatre - Arlington

First rate production of a fine, well-written, well-constructed new play. The set was fantastic in appearance and versatility. The direction spot on - and the acting of the highest standard. Theatre the way theatre should always be!

    Pride was great!

by milgal on 10/25/13Signature Theatre - Arlington

Play was outstanding and very funny lines. However, the seating was way too close, no room to even wiggle. I had a large man on either side of me and both took up more than their share of space. I could not sit back in my chair and had to keep my arms and shoulders scrunched in front of me as no room to relax them. Very uncomfortable........

"Pride in the Falls of Autrey Mills"

by Bundini on 10/22/13Signature Theatre - Arlington

While it was a treat to see a major star - Christine Lahti of stage, screen and film - in a 100 seat theatre just a few miles from my home, the play itself was trite and clichéd. Lahti plays a suburban Southern woman who tries to maintain the perfect Southern Living lifestyle, but there are cracks in the foundation of her family. Her husband's having an affair, her son comes out as gay, and her other son, once law school bound now works at the equivalent of a Chucky Cheese - and likes it. Lahti elevates the TV-ish material which hardly breaks new ground. She works hard, playing the honesty of the situations - but you don't so much feel for the character as for the actress, wishing she had better material to show off her gifts. An icky subplot about an incestuous relationship between brothers feels tacked on and gratuitous. We went not only to see Lahti, but this new playwright, hailed as the Hot New Writer from his last play at Signature - but were incredibly disappointed by the play itself. Technically, the play was superb - as was the acting. Script - meh.
