The night clearly belonged to The Prayer Chain. Andy, Eric, Tim and Wayne proved their little OC band from the early 90s was nowhere near finished. This week they will be adding a 2nd show in Nashville, and who knows what else to expect moving forward.
The House of Blues in Anaheim was the perfect venue for this reunion event. Big enough to host nearly 1,000 fans, but intimate enough to feel like any seat was a great seat (frankly there were very few seats - nearly everyone stood as it was an open dance floor). Opening band Pax217 was well received, adding a hip-hop/rock hybrid sound to the festivities, not unlike Rage Against the Machine. Dakoda Motor Co followed with a set list which pretty much mirrored what they became known for back in the 90s. Surfing legend Peter King led Davia (lead vocals), Chuck Cummings (drums), a bassist and lead guitarist on a 45-minute road down memory lane. Fun, exuberant, danceable surf rock, they were the perfect “warm-up” for what followed.
The Prayer Chain mixed a few songs from “Mercury” together with the entire “Shawl” album,
marking the 25th anniversary of the latter. Songs like “Like I Was”, “Fifty-Eight” and “Crawl” have clearly stood the test of time. After only a month or two of practice rehearsals, the band sounded as polished as it was when it first released “Shawl” (dare I say even moreso?).
(I was so mesmerized during their performance that I didn’t even reach for the phone in my pocket to take photos.) I rarely use the word “perfect” these days; honestly, that word would pretty much sum up Saturday night’s musical celebration.
Already looking forward to the 50-year anniversary tour!
