Great! As always. Sorry if this is too short an answer, I'm succinct.

Fabulous alumni piece. Very cute youth strings. Wind ensemble and conservatory orchestras' talents seemed stifled by the conductor's painfully slow pace. His brakes took away from my enjoyment, which I think would have been greater at a faster tempo, even at the expense of a possibly less than perfect performance. Loved the Phil Orch. Would see them again. (I'm only in town on business until March 1, so I may not have the opportunity.) Wished the audience was more sophisticated. The gentleman behind me hummed the melody on more than one tune, which was terribly distracting. Even after I turned my head a bit to hopefully indicate that he could be heard and perhaps he would not want to continue, it persisted. There was also talking by several around me at various times, during the pieces, which reduced my enjoyment as well. Perhaps something could be tactfully mentioned during the pre-concert announcements, similar to the vein of respecting others by turning cell phones and other electronic devices off. Thank you for your interest.

Musical expertise was exceptional
by Umpqua on 11/12/12Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5Being a classical pianist myself, I was most impressed by the orchestra's stunning execution of a very difficult program. The conductor is to be commended for bringing out the orchestra's technical expertise, its ability to express the emotional content of the music and its musical unity as a group. After two orchestra performances in Roseburg, we had the chance to host two members of the orchestra for the night, once two boys, once two girls, and on both occasions, we learned a lot and were impressed by this organization at a personal level. We would highly recommend that people take advantage of the opportunity to observe this organization for themselves....they will not be disappointed.
Very nicely done by wonderful young people
by Charbub on 3/12/12Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5Well performed concert especially the second half. Lauren Siess's performance was excellent and an inspiration from such a young performer.

The Portland Youth Phil's premiere night
by NewPYPfan on 11/15/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5That was one heck of a concert. Youth? Really? They sounded as if they were seasoned musicians. Obviously the conductor inspires these kids.
The national cellist winner was GREAT
by OregonCougar on 3/7/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5I had bought tix for Dad - and he raved about it. These students are just as good as the "regular" symphony, and the tix are less than half the price.
PYP was a great family event
by weirleader on 1/3/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5We took our entire family (12 of us) to the concert and had a very enjoyable time. It was nice to see so many talented young people -- some of them too young to carry their large instruments! We wanted our kids to get a taste of what is possible and this certainly delivered.

Transported!
by MsMusic on 3/14/10Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5We were absolutely thrilled by the performance last night - Mr. Hattner is a gifted conductor indeed - reminded me of Lennie Bernstein! Miss Okhovat gave a wondrous rendition of the Saint-Saens, very mature, superb intonation, and astounding dexterity - I just LOVED it. She has the potential for a great career. But the Shostakovich! I was in tears - I have not heart it played that well in 20 years. With my eyes closed, it was impossible to tell that the orchestra was not an adult group. They had real talent, real fire - and were so well directed. What a joy to see the young faces so intent on perfection. Thank you all for an evening we will remember.
