Portishead was great; they had really awesome projections (video of their live performance projected behind them) and the sound was great. Highly recommended!
I've always loved Portishead since I first heard their music back in the 90's. Their combination of gothic poetry, break-beats, scratching, distorted guitars, and sampling make them one of the most unique, yet very listenable bands I've ever heard; not to mention the contrast between Beth Gibbons' entrancing vocals and the deep and dreary sounds of this remarkable band and simply genius. After I recently discovered their latest album, Third, which was not made for over ten years after their previous self-titled album and the Roseland NYC album, I was in love all over again. I was pleasantly surprised about the new sounds, sequencing and use of synthesizers. It was a great evolution to their sound. When I heard they were coming to NY this year I could not have been happier to spend the money on these tickets. The Hammerstein is an excellent place for this type of show mostly because Ms. Gibbons' voice is like a sad opera singer. Every song sounded amazing, but, the highlight for me was their deeply depressing, but beautiful rendition of 'Wandering Star.' No drums, just the bass-line and a complimentary weeping guitar. I literally cried during this performance. This show was so good that I didn't care about how bad my situation was before the show started, or even how cramped my seat was. I felt classy watching this show. I'll never forget this truely amazing experience.
one of the best shows i've seen. i went to both nights in new york & was blown away by their ability to still put on such a incredible performance 20 years from their beginning.
Portishead was unreal, 10 years since they have been in the US and totally worth the wait. Cheap hotel banquet chairs, probably 15 years old. Do yourself a favor and get there early for best seats (GA) some giant woman with big hair sat in front of me, luckily I could see the stage between the folds in her kneck.
it did not sound like they did a sound check prior to the show. her voice was drowned out for the first three songs. the speakers kept clipping and there was a lot of distortion. hammerstein should check their equipment. the videos and light show were great.
Beth Gibbons is incredible, stunning, amazing!!!!!! There are no workds that describe her energy. Her voice is beautiful. Her performance is fantastic. She's a unique individual. I would do a lot to see her live again.
and it was totally worth it. amazing show. even some of the stuff from that third album sounded great live.
I remember the first time I listened to Portishead around 15 years ago. The first feeling I got was the restless sadness caused by Beth Gibbons' voice. I finally got to see them live on Wednesday at Hammerstein Ballroom. It was awesome specially because they had split a long time ago, and I always thought that I was not going to see them live. This was a present from the cosmos! Portishead came up with a very well thought video set that combined images with the live projections of the band playing. They had cameras posted in different places of the stage that captured the best angles of the lead singer, percussionist and guitar player. This show was sober and cool at the same time, and I have an indelible smile since. If you have the chance, you should go and check this band out. Their sound is sensual and powerful, and they have been doing this for decades. You won't be disappointed.
Fully matured artistry at its peak. Beth Gibbons voice and style keep getting better and better. Andrew, Geoff and the rest of the band not only are they one of the "tightest" bands ever to set foot on a stage, they are all amazing artists on their own. An unforgettable evening!
life changing! set went new track/old track/new track, etc.
The show was awesome- Beth Gibbons sounds just as good live as she does on her albums. The breakdown was 5 songs from her first album Dummy, 2 songs from her self-titled, and 5 from her third album. (At least the way I remember it). She played Roads, Glory Box, Sour Times, Wandering Star, and Mysterons from her first album. Cowboys and Over from her second. Didn't like or listen to her third album as much, so I couldn't tell you names of songs except Machine Gun, which she played. Only songs I wanted to hear that she didn't play were It Could Be Sweet and Only You. My only complaint is that they only played for less than an hour and a half.
Bad Ass is an understatement...I'm glad I was a part of this.
I'm pretty sure this was an amazing show. Unfortunately, a drunk wench with no concept of common courtesy was shouting her head off throughout every song to announce our location, the year, and the fact that Portishead was performing. "WOOOOOOOO! 2011! NYC MOTHERF---ERS! PORTISHEAD!! KILL IT!! YEAH!! THAT'S HOW IT'S DONE!!! BREAK IT DOWN!! YEAH!!!!! 2011!!!!! 13 YEARS!!!! WOOOO!!!!!" When I approached this putrid beast to explain that certainly everyone in the venue was equally excited, we were actually there to hear the band, not her. At which point, she violently splashed her entire drink in my face and upper torso. Drunk wench, please take note: screaming your head off BETWEEN songs is commonly acceptable. You are a horrible waste of life. It is my sincerest hope that you read this and that you recognize how utterly disgusting you are. I would never strike a human female, but lucky for your monstrous self, security quickly swooped in before the situation had an opportunity to escalate into violence. You are garbage, capice?
Had a great time watching Portishead they were unbelievable. Special effects was trippy. Portishead will only be one.
Fantastic show! Portishead is just amazing! I just wish they would tour more
Amazing, absolutely amazing!!!!! Portishead at its finest!!! Great musicians, great set list, they play their hearts out!!!!
Incredible amazing sound and set. One of my best shows.
An amazing show. They played pretty much every song I wanted to hear (no "Strangers" though). I enjoyed when the original 3 members stayed on stage to perform an amazing/ eerie version of "Wandering Star". The screen in the back displayed cool visuals that were tooled around with to give it a sort of damaged VHS tape look. Their music is filled with emotion and they definitely brought it to the stage, I would see them again in a heartbeat. :)
Worth wait to see Portishead live. After seen all the videos specially "Live in Roseland" I'm always picture myself see this band playing their non stop and psychedelic sounds, Besides Beth Gibons not engage with the audience the way I thought that will do, but she prove to be a fantastic performer and have an amazing voice.
