About

Polyphia In Concert

Anyone who thinks they know what to expect from the prog-metal genre hasn't yet heard Polyphia. The Dallas-based group is primarily an instrumental band with some familiar reference points — Seattle group Minus the Bear's burbling math-rock riffing, glacial electronic textures, and more evocative folk fingerpicking — mixed in with funky rhythmic edges and bluesy guitar work. The 2017 single "LIT" even emphasizes jagged electric guitar riffs over plusher electronic beats.

Polyphia's 2018 album, New Levels New Devils, goes even further into uncharted territory. Opening track "Nasty" boasts intricate guest work from Jason Richardson (a guitarist known for his work with Born of Osiris and Chelsea Grin), while up-and-coming vocalist Cuco adds vocals on "So Strange." Popular single "G.O.A.T.," meanwhile, shimmers with rhythmic curlicues and latticework-like riffs that combine to create a bustling soundscape. The end result is that Polyphia — which takes its name from the word "polyphony," a musical term to describe sound built around multiple melodies — feels even more impossible to categorize.

That kind of boundary-bumping is built into the band's DNA. Guitarists Scott LePage and Timothy Henson originally formed Polyphia in 2010 while still in high school. Although the duo possesses guitar hero influences — the former is into Stevie Ray Vaughan, while the latter favors Jimi Hendrix — they also appreciate other genres, including electronic music and hip-hop. Clay Gober became bassist in 2012, while drummer Clay Aeschliman linked up with the group in 2016.

With this lineup locked into place, Polyphia exhibit the same precision live as they do on record, although they augment their focused performances with elaborate light shows and dramatic, crowd-pleasing crescendos and witty between-song banter. They've already opened for Coheed and Cambria, Between the Buried and Me, the Contortionist, and CHON, and are bona fide globe-trotters who have toured to places such as the U.K., Australia, and Japan.

Music to let your body and mind go...

This group is the real deal. Their albums are amazing. Live? They are better! Their sound is seems almost effortless. But it is so hard. Watching the pit and all those around me enjoying it was an incredible experience.

I was just a casual fan when I got the tickets to see Polyphia live. After watching them live, I'm a real fan now! They put on a great show, and are even more dynamic and exciting to watch than I ever anticipated! Can't wait to see them on the next tour!

    A spectacular first concert experience.

by fmj on 8/9/22Irving Plaza - New York

Since I never leave my house, I've never been to a concert before. Deciding to go see Polyphia live was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. The energy I felt from just being a part of the crowd was an unbelievable experience that made me wish the concert was longer. The sound at the venue was very good and everything was clear, and being able to see the band I look up to is incredible in and of itself. I highly recommend any Polyphia fans to see them live if they ever get the chance, it's beyond impressive to see that they can play as well as they do.

Everything I expected and then some...

    by R. M. on 8/5/22The Underground - Charlotte

One of the best shows I have even been to, large or small. I would recommend Polyphia to anyone looking for music with more than simple three-chord progressions, yet still look for melody & good songwriting.

Polyphia is amazing, the band has great energy and seem very down to earth. Great music. Crowd was friendly, mosh pits were energetic but not brutal. Tons of fun.

They did amazingly. Just the venue wasn't very kind to people that aren't 6 foot tall lol. Will definitely see them again, hopefully just in a larger venue

Great performance by Polyphia - Venue was less than ideal

by DJZeeATL on 8/2/22The Masquerade - Heaven - Atlanta

I used the address provided by the venue, and it dropped me off on a poorly lit street with no signs I could see of where to go to get in. A bouncer from a club on the street told me to go around corner and through parking garage to get in. Very odd. Asked some random folks where to go and followed them to the venue. It was a sold out show and I arrived just as the band was starting so after walking around the bottom and then top floor, there was really no standing space left to actually see the band, and the sound gets blocked if you're not within ear-shot. Finally found a spot on the stairs which is as far back as you can get against the wall in order to see and hear the band at least. Yes, I could have shown up earlier and had a better experience, but most places I frequent for shows this is not a problem. Leaving the venue was an adventure. It seemed like a ghost town outside on the streets with a few homeless folks scattered and looking for help. I chatted them up as I was ordering a ride which was the real mind blower. It cost me $18 to get there but was getting prices of $90-$120 to go back the 3 miles to my place. Ridiculous. It seems like the ride share companies marked this area for extreme price surges knowing people will pay almost anything to get the hell out of this sketchy area. If it was raining at the time I would have immediately walked to an area bar I know. However I had to wait under a business awning for about 30 mins before I made the trek to the nearest local bar about a half-mile away. Then an hour later I ordered my $16 ride back home. Let's just say I miss the old Masquerade venue, and definitely not motivated to go back to this one sadly.
