Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and entered the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times.

  • Everything expected..

by Jay on 11/14/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

Second hockey game first time in the regular seats. I was in a suite my first time. Enjoyed it a lot, only thing I wasn’t a fan of when we first came up the one set of escalators not sure what side there was a bar cart for mixed drinks.. Walked about 65% around the stadium to our seats and didn’t see another cart, and didn’t notice any concessions with mixed drinks. Not a beer person. Other than that I will be back for another game….

We had a great time! Game was awesome! Appreciated the shoutouts to all the veterans.

  • Solid Experience

by Rockwood on 11/2/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

I've been going to Penguins games at PPG Paints Arena for over 10 years now. I can't really say I've had a bad experience at any of the games. The arena is always well maintained and it's a solid environment. Ushers and staff are always polite and helpful, and the have are fun to go to. If I can say anything bad about three events here, it's the confession concession prices. $6 for a 20oz bottle of water? 11.50 for a 32oz soda?? And $12.50 for 12oz draft beer. We've come to expect these prices, but that doesn't mean we're happy with them. Other than that, we enjoy the games.

  • And the Sens win

  • Fantastic

It was my first game. I enjoyed it. They lost but still had a great time

  • Great Atmosphere, Terrible Goaltending

by Shrek on 10/31/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

I have been a Pens fan since the early 90s and attended games at the Igloo many, many times. This was my first visit to the new PPG barn, and wow. What a place! I was just at the TD Garden in boston 2 days previous and PPG blows boston out of the water. Wide comfortable seats. SO many stands for food and drinks. Just a great atmosphere. Now Burgatory did lose my order, but they made it right after waiting a bit. The only other thing that could have gone better was to win the game. Jarry couldn't stop a beach ball.

  • Amazing experience

by Louise London on 10/29/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and our children were visiting from London we wanted to experience an ice hockey game and were lucky to be able to purchase tickets. What a great experience!! The crowd, the warm up, the crowd participation, the seats, the game, we loved it all! So easy to get a drink and food. No queues just a really well run event and experience ti attend!

  • The view from our seat was awesome

by Merlina on 10/29/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

The Penguins fans and crowd are pretty tame, opposed to other hockey games arena I have attended. The price of the tickets very reasonable comparing to purchasing tickets without the GOVX discount. This is our 24th hockey arena. We have a few more to go, mostly teams in Canada.

  • Great game!

by Ashley on 10/29/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

  • Penguins games

by California family on 10/27/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

we had a wonderful time at the Penguins games. The energy at the arena is amazing. The staff was so friendly (okay, except for one guy at guest services was kind of grouchy) The arena is so clean and our grandson loved the chicken fingers that were there.

  • Great Time on Enemy Grounds

    by Wingsfan_intheburgh on 10/21/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Despite not being a part of the Pena fanbase, the game atmosphere and arena were top-notch. Highly recommend the Smokehouse French fries. Can't bring myself to say go pens… so, GO HOCKEY!! 🏒🤙

  • Had a Great Time!! Family Friendly Event!!

by Richele on 10/18/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

The Ushers were all Super Friendly, Professional, and Helpful when entering and trying to find our seats! All around it was a very Fun experience from the "Penguins"to the Music/DJ, to Iceburgh the Parrot entertaining the Crowd, to the Free T-Shirts being launched into the stands (to which myself and boyfriend both caught) the buckets of goodies Iceburgh the Parrot handed out to kids, the Camera man making everyone feel special by putting the fans on the Big Screen threw out the entire event!! This was one of the most Family Friendly Events I've been to! There is a little bit of something for all ages!! I will definitely be purchasing tickets again due to our experience we had! We attended The Penguins Game on October 14th 2023 they Won 5-2!! Penalties were a bit ridiculous lol but aren't they always! Thanks to all for the great Experience!!

  • Great game and seats but...

by Pens fan on 10/14/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

Would have been nice to have physical tickets. Especially with this being an opening game and historical matchup it would have been nice to have something to commemorate the game instead of a digital 'ticket'.

  • Fun but could have been better

by DP on 10/14/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 3 out of 5

The game and experience was fun but upset I could not get a physical ticket printed for the game :-(

  • PPG STADIUM

by Andy D on 10/13/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Attended the PPG stadium for the opening night game for Pittsburgh Penguins ice hockey game for the 2023/2024 season. Ease of access into the stadium via the approach roads. The plaza outside had photo opportunities with Penguins locos. Due to the number of gates scanning of tickets was easy. Very good signage to the seating areas backed up by clearly identified staff made finding our seats easy. A great stadium and concourse areas. Pregame entertainment got the crowd warmed up including the introduction of team members. A lot could be learned by my main sport of rugby league on game day marketing. Throughout the game the Pens mascot moved around the arena entertaining the crowd.
