Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and entered the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times.

Easy to enter parking lot and the PPG arena. Slight expense for parking but was expected. Inside the arena the choices of food and drinks were plentiful. Arena workers were very friendly and helpful. Overall fun time and will be back again!

  • Go, Pens!

by Vic on 2/17/20PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Bought these tickets to take a friend and his wife to his first ever Penguins hockey game. He had just completed his first round of treatment for the big “C”. He has always been a Pittsburgh sports fan who happens to live in Maryland. So, it was a very emotional experience for him. The Penguins did indeed win. Our seats were fantastic. Thank you!

Very impressed with the game day operations at PPG Paints Arena. Security screening is smooth and timely. Facility is well kept. Not a bad seat in the house. Bathrooms and concourses are kept clean. Ushers are very helpful and professional. GO BRUINS!

  • Plus 20

by Wrighter on 1/22/20PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

I used the plus $20 for the concession. It works well but they need to train their employees better. They didn’t know which buttons to push at the 3 concessions I used so it took a really long time.

Sid came back after missing 28 games and hadn’t missed a beat. Pens routed the Wild. Exciting game. Pens scored free Big Mac goal, chick fil A fries, git go water and free meatball they did so well. Great seats behind goal. Lots of action and celebrations. Pittsburgh theme night was a fun, great idea. Missing my Carnegie Mellon mascot (Tartan) though! Fun time w Sid fanatic sister and son in law.

  • Penguin game

by JODI on 1/8/20PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

I want to thank the gentleman at Ticketmaster who helped me with this transaction. I mistakenly purchased tickets for a later date that I could not use and was told via the online help chat that I was basically screwed and there was no grace period or refunds on tickets I purchased 20 minutes prior! I then asked the help chat online person what would happen if I canceled my credit card transaction on my end and was told that was up to me but I would basically be running the risk of not being able to purchase tickets in the future. I was highly upset at that point bit waited until the next morning to speak to a live operator who helped me void the tickets and waited while I purchased new ones for the game we attended which was great despite the penguins loss. Again, a huge thank you to the gentleman who I spoke to!
