Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and entered the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times.

  • 1st pandemic game

    by K. K. on 4/27/21PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

The safety protocols are great. Usher in my section gave too many warnings to a party of 4 mask deniers without tossing them out. Music during warmup prior to first period was too, too loud. Is this really neccessary?! Unable to talk to friends. Would be nice to have a few more meal choices.

Had a wonderful time at the Penguins game. Seats were great, almost center court.

Loved the seats. Easy parking, easy entry. Very clean usher were constantly cleaning the handrails. Made sure everyone was wearing masks. Felt very comfortable. Would love to go again. Had a great time.

  • Glad to be back!

It was great to finally make it back in person to a Pens game! The arena was heavily sanitized at all times and people were reminded to wear their masks constantly (or were given a mask if they didn't have one). Social distancing was kept really well with instructions on where to stand, where your seats were located in reference to other's etc. The scan and pay stations for alcohol sales were a great way to get what you needed and get out. I'd like to see those stations stick around even after COVID-19 is under control. Thoroughly enjoyed the game!

  • Once in a lifetime opportunities

    by J. D. on 3/15/21PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Due to covid, obvious going to any hockey games was not a thought we had this year. However, with the COVID-19 vaccines, my father was able to get one and it presented us this opportunity for some once in a lifetime game (Only 15% venue capacity/under 2,000 fans) We couldn't pass up it up and got three games in four days. It was an amazing time, PPG Paints is a very well set up stadium that was extremely clean for all games, staff was very polite, professional and friendly, they had helped us multiple times. The only downside was a few bad apples being drunk and disorderly towards staff, our food was cold, not cooked, or just hard, and it was frozen solid hard, on top of not the best choices of beverages., but all in all, this was a fantastic week to go with my father and provided us memories we will always have. So thank you!

  • Good clean fun

    by A. L. on 3/7/21Rating: 5 out of 5

Very good experience. Clean and organized. Ushers cleaning rails at every intermission, workers sanitizing escalator handles constantly. Staff did enforce wearing masks during the game to ensure everyone’s safety. Looking forward to my next visit.

  • Two games 3-7 and 3-8. What a great weekend.

The seats were excellent and access to the arena were very easy. Very friendly atmosphere, helpful staff and lots of good eats and drinks. Other than losing to the Caps, we had a fantastic time!

Loved loved loved the seats! We lost the game but you can’t win them all.

  • Great game day

by Matt on 3/10/20PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Had a great time. After being in Washington for the game two weeks ago and having fans harassing us and texting the police about all the Penguins fans trying to get everyone ejected it was nice to come to a calmer place. The caps fans next to me told me we were more civilized than they are at home. Even though we lost it was still a fun time with the family. My family got a kick out of the air drop prizes and the helmet popcorn bowls. Easy in, easy out of stadium.

The venue is clean and bright and friendly employees. The food is a tad expensive, we try to eat before attending a game at PPG Arena.

  • Great game and view

by Josh on 2/19/20PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

Had a great experience with the seats. Only problem had someone leaning forward blocking the goal sometimes but could see everything else perfect. Only problem had trouble leaving the arena but got out safely.

  • Great game but...

by cortkal on 2/19/20PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

Love hockey, love the Penguins, love standing room only "seats" but I paid a little higher price for these tickets because I thought they were not limited or obstructed view as some SRO seats are. I would say seat 9 was okay but seat 10 was definitely obstructed. Just would have been nice to know.
