Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and entered the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times.

Drove to Pittsburgh PA. to watch a Penguins hockey game. Hotel was very nice. The hockey game was great. Great fans and great atmosphere. Kids had a great time as did I. We did do some sightseeing as Pittsburgh is a beautiful city. We will be going there again for hockey and sightseeing.

  • Not happy!

by VC on 4/24/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 2 out of 5

My wife has her $500 purse with her at gate! She tries to explain she didn’t know you couldn’t bring the bag in! The guy at the gate is rude, and cuts her off, and just keep stating “your not bringing that bag in here!” Rude! Just really being unprofessional. Just maybe figure out a solution and help out with the situation! I guess the guy feels he has some control in his life during hockey games at PPG Paints! 👏 And how come every other event I go to she can bring it in..baseball games…Car races..whatever. I guess Pittsburgh is a hot spot for suspicious activity!

  • SIL treat

by Hankster on 4/18/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

  • Entry Time Confusing

by Pghgal on 4/17/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 3 out of 5

We were allowed to enter at 4:30 to shop but not go to our seats. How did we find out? By a security guard yelling across the lobby. Not the 3 beside the one across the room. There were I there’s going up so…..no signs saying otherwise. Only a sign on the doors stating No Reentry. Ummmm, I’m confused…..get with it PPG. Treat people with respect. We just want to enjoy a Pens game with our family

  • First time I used Ticketmaster. Very nervous. Went great.

by Liz on 4/12/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Our daughter bought us tickets for Caps/Penguins. She sent them to us on line. It was quite an experience downloading on Ticketmaster since I had never done it before. Couldn’t believe how easy it was at the gate to get into the game. A whole new experience. The game was great as we won. I am a big CAPS fan. Sorry Penguins fans. Grew up in western Pa but moved to Washington before there was a team in Pittsburgh.

  • Exciting game between the Penguins and the NY Rangers

by OakIslandguy on 4/1/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Very exciting game as the lead went back and forth. Last two minutes were nail biting when the goalie was pulled with the Rangers ahead 3-2. I have been a Ranger fan since I was a kid.
