Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and entered the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times.

    by K. L. on 12/23/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

PPG arena is now a no cash venue for hockey except for tips even the 50/50 drawing is electronic card only. It also nice not to be harassed by scalpers outside the arena, since the tickets are paperless now also. Enjoyed the game and having the tickets on the phone.

  • Dream Come True - FRONT ROW - On the Glass!! :)

by Teresa N. - Chemo Patient on 12/9/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I have been dedicated Pittsburgh Penguins fans forever and have enjoyed watching their superstar players destroy their opponents for and win their cups over the years! We've been able to see a few games in person ... maybe one or two games a year for the past 6 or 7 years or so (minus 2020-now due to pandemic). On a side note, in 2005 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2013, it became metastatic and in 2020 it came back yet again. All oral meds have stopped working, so I am currently attending weekly IV chemo treatments, and had a DREAM to sit ON THE GLASS in the FRONT ROW. Well, because of Ticketmaster, my husband and I got to experience just that Tuesday (12/5/22). I went online to see if anything was available and these tickets popped up. They were front row seats (2) on the aisle (husband needs leg room at 6'3") and the tickets were affordable for us, so I snatched them up. So there we were, at PPG Arena in our Lemieux jerseys. We go to see Sid, Geno, Jake, Carter, Dumo, Kappy, Jarry & DeSmith, McGuinn, etc. (too many to name) all up close and personal!! Needless to say it was PRICELESS for me, and WE WON - defeating the Blue Jackets. So yes, my overall rating is a 5-Star. Thank you SO MUCH!! Dream come true! Teresa

  • Great Experience

by Tia on 12/6/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

This was the third time we had been to the PPG arena for a penguins game. The facilities are always very clean and neat. The price of the tickets was reasonable.

  • It was my first game !! It was awesome

by Naynay on 12/6/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

PPG paint arena very clean, and there were a lot of people there to help if needed.. what’s the matter? The only complaint I have is how expensive that alcohol is and the food I mean you pay in massive amount of money for the tickets I mean for one beer I could buy a case as well, but ridiculous.

  • Blues vs Pens

  • Penguin holiday

by Scottish Robert on 12/4/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

The arena was amazing compared to British hockey arena. The build up to thd game is great. The hockey was amazing. The only fault was that the card payment machines for the Pens shop and the 50/50 do not allow certain cards but was able to purchase with the same card food and drink in the arena. This needs to be sorted.

by Curt on 11/29/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

I took the wife to her first hockey game and we both had a blast! Nothing could have made it a better experience other than the price of souvenirs.

  • Easy access using the Ticketmaster app and Apple wallet

  • Great fun event.

by Amber on 11/29/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

It is always fun to go to a Penguins game win or lose. We lost, but got to see two great teams go at it. Our seats were in the upper level, center ice, good overall view of the game. The people working were nice and friendly. We went to this game with a person with mobility issues, and that uses a walker. PPG Paints Arena staff were very accommodating and helpful with our friend issues. We had a great trip and visit.

  • Thanksgiving eve vs Flames

Great atmosphere due to celebrating Geno’s 1000th game. How fitting that he should score the deciding goal in the shoot out…..
