Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and entered the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times.

by KrittyBRN on 1/19/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Got my husband 2 tickets for Christmas since we’ve never been to a Pens game and always wanted to go. We had an amazing time!! The Pens won, we sat near really fun people and the venue was really great and easy to navigate! We’ll definitely go back and hopefully get to bring our kiddos!

It's always a blast to go and see the Penguins in action. When you go to a Penguins game you get to see some of the finest hockey players in the world play. The stadium is energizing and full of a great fans and staff. The stadium is clean and has lots of things to do from within the stadium.

by Tonya B on 1/18/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

We’re a family of 5 and we LOVE the Penguins!! We can only get to one game per year and boy did we choose the right game!! Malkin (my favorite) had 2 goals and the rest of the team did very well against the Cannuks. It was exciting and we pulled out a win!! Fantastic night! And we got Fioris (my favorite)

  • Easy and fast

by Andreas on 1/16/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

Very easy to book the tickets and get into the stadium. I would like a heads up that bags are not allowed, so i could plan accordingly.

  • Amazing time

by Estmtdprpht on 1/14/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

Considering in the digital age ticketmaster is the base price and original seller so I feel better getting my tickets from here. As for the convenience of mobile tickets I would have giving 5 stars had I had be given the opportunity to have a physical ticket. I took my son to the game and I would have like him to be able to have a the stub as a reminder

  • Penguins Game

by Ty on 1/13/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Very nice arena and very friendly staff. Our usher was one of the nicest I’ve had at any sporting event. Seats were also some of the best I’ve had at an event

  • Hat giveaway short on hats

by Dented on 1/13/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

Brought my daughter & her friend to this game because of the sponsorship of #breakTheIce on behalf of Rick Rypien. My daughter & her friend both are struggling with mental health issues. Thought the hat would be a great souvenir for them, but sadly they ran out of hats before we got there. The seats were great, the game was excellent. It’s a long drive 1 hr 45 minutes to get there but it’s a treat.

  • One of the best venues I’ve been to.

    by JDULYA412 on 1/13/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Every time I go the arena the staff friendly and knowledgeable/helpful. The arena always clean and the food is good. I mainly go for hockey games and the atmosphere is always great but have been there for concerts and WWE events all have been great.

by CJ on 1/2/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Easy access to and from the arena and we all enjoyed.

  • Seating

by Audioman on 1/2/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 3 out of 5

I was very frustrating that the fans were constantly walking up and down the stairs, blocking the view of half of the ice ! I mean constantly. Why the usher didn't or couldn't hold them until a stop in play I don't understand. Our son was in town for the holidays and we surprised him with tickets. What a let down. Also, the sound in our section (217) was sometimes extremely loud and piercing ! The sound system is really showing its age !!

  • Game was great; Entry not so much

    by DER55 on 1/2/23PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

The entry to PPG Arena needs help. Many doors open with agents idle while the “bag” line was down the street. Adding insult to injury, turns out my bag was so small it didn’t require going through the bag line so my family and I waited over 20 minutes for nothing. The signing on stanchions outside is not clear and the guy shouting that ALL BAGS had to wait in the bag line didn’t help.

  • Disappointed with our seats

by Molly on 12/31/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 1 out of 5

We were very disappointed with our seats. We thought we were going to be sitting where there would be more leg room and less people around us, according to the seating chart I looked at, I thought we were sitting in a section where there were chairs, not seats in a row. My husband has a little trouble walking and it was tight getting in and out of the row. We sat in section 210, row Q, seats 8 & 9. And to top it off the Penguins lost the game after starting out 4-0 in the first period.

  • Disappointing venue / Crazy Game

by Bolts Fan on 12/31/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 3 out of 5

For a 12 year old venue, the arena (PPG Paints Arena) did not handle the crowd very well. There were not enough restrooms to handle the between period intermissions. The walkways were narrow and crowded. The game and special effects/lighting/sound were excellent.

  • Awesome

by Ron on 12/31/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the best events ive ever been too. They were accompanied as we bought seats and my grandson shattered his ankle and is on a scooter and can't put weight on that foot. So PPG made room for him and his party.

  • Penguins vs panthers

Im handicap could not find space to park had to pay 28 dollars and walk long way

  • Mediocre at best

by Dr. Priel on 12/23/22PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 1 out of 5

Having traveled for 4 hours to get to PPG arena from Gettysburg, PA it would have been nice to have been able to go to the bathroom inside the facility. Instead, I had to wait 30 minutes for the front doors to open at 6:00 p.m. At least one door should be open to the public for emergency purposes such as requiring urgent need to use the bathroom on the first floor. Too many drunks (at least 3) around me in my section 204. I can only afford to bring my son to maybe two home games a season and I expect well behaved individuals in attendance. This was not a pleasant experience. Perhaps the leadership of this venue should prioritize a nice family atmosphere over a profit in over priced booze that only results in ill-behaved public.
