About

Montclair indie-rock standouts Pinegrove are a prime example of how powerful word of mouth is when building an organic following. From their early years gathering a loyal local following in New Jersey to the present day, Pinegrove have released a prolific number of albums that are steeped in literary references and display a rare versatility, often mixing alt-country, emo, and classic indie rock.

Though Pinegrove feature a rotating cast of performers, including indie musician Nandi Rose Plunkett, aka Half Waif, its core members are singer Evan Stephens Hall and drummer Zack Levine, who grew up together in New Jersey. The duo officially formed Pinegrove in 2010 and named their band after the Brown Family Environmental Center, a nature reserve near Hall's alma mater, Ohio's Kenyon College.

In the early days, Pinegrove performed at DIY shows in basements around Montclair and surrounding towns in New Jersey, often booking shows themselves. In 2010, Hall posted the band's debut EP, Mixtape One, to Bandcamp. They followed it up with their debut album Meridian in 2012.

In 2013, the band released another EP, &, and Mixtape Two in 2014. All of those releases were then combined into a 2014 compilation, Everything So Far. In October 2015, after years of releasing music themselves, Pinegrove signed to Boston indie label Run for Cover Records, which re-released Everything So Far that same month.

Pinegrove were met with a huge wave of critical and commercial success when they released their sophomore album, 2016's Cardinal, which was recorded in Levine and Hall's parents' basements in Montclair over the course of four years. That same year, they toured with Into It. Over It., Sports, Ratboys, and Plunkett's Half Waif. They also played a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR and were featured on a number of critics' end-of-year list.

In 2017, Pinegrove released another live album, Elsewhere. They also rented a rural farmhouse in Kinderhook, New York, where they recorded their third album, 2018's Skylight. Skylight was independently released via Bandcamp, and a physical release followed in February 2019.

More recently, Pinegrove signed with Rough Trade and prepared their next full-length album, 2020's Marigold, which was also recorded at the band's farmhouse studio. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Pinegrove released the dual live album and film Amperland, NY, which "reimagined" songs across the band's discography.

In early 2022, Pinegrove released 11:11, a studio album mixed by former Death Cab For Cutie member and veteran producer Chris Walla. 11:11 boasted the singles "Orange" and "Alaska," and Pinegrove embarked on a huge tour in support that year across North America and Europe.

Band sounded good... i think.... i heard them once over the roar of the millenials singing all the words... ALL. THE. WORDS.... Pinegrove sounded good when all the kids checked their phones once at the same time... maybe it's just me, but when I pay for a show I wanna hear the BAND sing the songs...

    Great band, great venue

by SG on 3/1/19The Masquerade - Atlanta

Show started on time and it was easy to get drinks and move around the venue. Both bands sounded great. The lighting during performances was lacking but not terrible. Overall, a great experience. I'd recommend Pinegrove, Another Michael, and the Masquerade to any music fans.

    Pinegrove’s biggest show thus far!!

by Jordan on 3/1/19The Masquerade - Atlanta

The venue was really cool, and I had a lot of room to move around even in the very front of the space (it was in Heaven at The Masquerade in Atlanta). Pinegrove was also the most musically precise band I’ve ever seen live. They played without a click track and their time signature translations were also flawless. The band had a great vibe as well and was so friendly. Overall great experience!

Best band ever. Seriously if you don't see this band when they're in your town you are missing out big time.
