Philadelphia Flyers History

The Flyers, who joined the NHL in 1967 when the league expanded from the Original Six, became a dominant force in the 1970s, earning the nickname "The Broad Street Bullies" for their physical style of play. Starting with the 1972-1973 season, the Flyers amassed 18 consecutive Playoff appearances, propelled by the likes of three-time MVP Bobby Clarke, Reggie Leach, and left winger Bill Barber.

The team won back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships, defeating the Boston Bruins in six games in 1974 and the Buffalo Sabres in six games in 1975. A bid for a third consecutive Cup fell short when the Flyers were swept in the finals by the Montreal Canadiens. In the 13 seasons that followed, the Flyers led the league in points twice and reached the finals three more times. During the 1979-1980 season, they set a record by going 35 consecutive games without a loss.

Sparked by forwards Tim Kerr and Brian Propp, the Flyers returned to the finals in 1985 and 1987, but were denied the title each time by the Edmonton Oilers. Behind the "Legion of Doom" line of center Eric Lindros, left winger John LeClair, and right winger Mikael Renberg, the Flyers made their seventh Stanley Cup Finals appearance in team history.

The Flyers continued to be a force well into the next decade, never missing the Playoffs. They had one more shot at a Stanley Cup Championship in 2009-2010, coming back from down 3-0 in the conference semifinals to beat Boston en route to a finals berth against Chicago. The Blackhawks prevailed in six games. To date, the Flyers have made it to the Playoffs a total of 40 times.

  • An Unbelievable Weekend!

by Wifey on 1/29/24Wells Fargo Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

Watching my hubby meet and chat with his childhood idol, Bernie Parent, at the VIP reception with the Flyer Alumni was beyond words. These players have such a history, beginning with their first Stanley Cup 50 years ago. Joining with ‘younger’ Alumni to meet those of us who attended, they were very friendly and engaging. And some of them were simply hilarious! Then being able to watch the Alumni play against the Bruins Alumni was so entertaining - you could tell they were having so much fun on the ice and on the bench. The event was very well-organized and everyone left smiling!

  • Fantastic event

by JFly on 1/29/24Wells Fargo Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

Such a wonderful experience taking my daughter to her first Flyers game. Not only was it affordable, the seats, venue, and employees were amazing. Please consider lowering the price of regular season games so we can attend again!

Great to see all the alumni flyers again! Hope they do this again in year!

  • Love the Alumni

It's great when the Flyers Charities bring out and honor the alumni. No matter where the big club is fans come out for this and they are happy to help raise money for a good cause and have a good time.

My kids and I had a blast watching the alumni game. It was great to see players from the past few decades on the ice again.

  • Such a fun night!

by Ed on 1/29/24Wells Fargo Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

It was so amazing to see so many classic Flyers players on the ice together! I love re-living some great years when I watched them in their prime. And to see the Stanley Cup in the house was an added bonus. Great seats, great price, great night!

  • Memorable experience

by StuartL on 1/29/24Wells Fargo Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

Everything was great. The game was actually of a higher quality than I expected. But the Highlight was seeing the 1974-75 Flyers from the stanley cup era being honored before the game. As an old-timer who remembers them, it was great to be able to say one final salute to them.

  • A really fun night

by John R on 1/29/24Wells Fargo Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

The Flyers do know how to put on an event. The ceremony before the game was incredible. It was so good to see some of the 'classic' Flyers back in Philly to be honored. The game itself was a lot of fun. Love seeing the players I used to cheer for back on the ice together again.

  • Need More Gritty

by Back In Philly on 1/24/24Wells Fargo Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

Great venue, fun experience. Only two knocks. The first is traffic leaving the game, which is a problem leaving any Philly sports game. The second is that we bought tickets in Chaos Corner thinking that Gritty would mainly be there during the game. While he was there near the start of the game for a little bit, he hung out all over the place. Still, a great venue & great entertainment.

  • Best seats for a great price

by Mon on 1/15/24Wells Fargo Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

I purchased 3 last minute tickets for an extremely reasonable price. We had a great view of the game and were impressed with the beverage and food options. We hope to visit another NHL Venus soon.

  • Great Arena and fans!

by Ykcat on 1/13/24Wells Fargo Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

We were told not to wear our Canadiens jerseys. Wrong. We ended up not wearing them, but it was obvious who we were cheering, and the Philly fans were lovely!

  • Fun Times

    by Negadelphia76 on 1/10/24Wells Fargo Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

Great fun on Saturday afternoon at the WFC watching the Flyers win. People were really friendly and we had a great time.

  • Flyers out score and out hit the Flames

by Geno from Shamong on 1/9/24Wells Fargo Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

I took my daughter and two oldest grandsons to the Calgary game. We loved it! The Flyers literally fought their way through 3 periods to earn a 3-2 win! Go Flyers! Our once a year visit in person was very exciting! A new year with new blood! The change is happening!

  • Seat were strange

by April on 12/4/23Wells Fargo Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

So we got our tickets so that we could be with friends who already had seats 2&3. We bought seat 1 on the same row to sit next to them. Either I missed it or it wasn’t shared that seat 1 through the entire section had a railing between seats 1 & 2, so it was completely separate. This was weird and definitely not ideal, so beware if you’re getting seat 1, at least in section 116. Otherwise the game and seats were excellent.

  • Phantastic!

by Gritnatic on 12/3/23Wells Fargo Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

What a great game. Seats were awesome. Pregame was great. Go Flyers!

  • Poor

by Dave on 12/1/23Wells Fargo Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 2 out of 5

Overpriced food & drink. Pre-game and in game entertainment lacking significantly compared to other arenas. As a Flyers fan for decades, it’s disappointing that they still are not a Cup contender. Only scored one goal on home ice. I believe in Keith Jones. However, hiring John LeClair is another good ol’ boy hire. He was a talented player but in the conference finals against the Devils, we were up 3-1 in the series. We lost in 7 games. LeClair had ZERO goals over those 7 games. Then the Flyers gave him a big contract in the offseason. With Lindros no longer with the team, he dropped to a 10 goal scorer. And again, came up lame in 7 games to reach the Cup finals. Never should have been hired back.
