Phil Lesh Family band with Special guest

by Sheadgrove on 10/29/17Convention Hall - Asbury Park

Upon arrival in Asbury Park, A giant rainbow surrounded Convention hall! Phil lesh from the Grateful Dead was gonna play tonight and, seriously ? a rainbow over the venue? Nice! Good vibes where everywhere and I knew a ton of people at this show so it really felt like a local party to me. This place is one of worst sounding venues I have ever heard. It was not built for concerts. Its more wide than deep and the sound for almost every band I have seen here is muddy at best. No change tonight to start the show. In fact, I couldn't even make out the opening song until they started singing. Big River opened the show. Fortunately the sound did improve as the night went along and now I can say it was the BEST sounding show I ever attended at this venue. I thought the attendance was perfect. Just packed enough to give energy to the building and band but open enough to go find a seat or wander down low to the stage if you chose. Notable songs first set were West La Fadeaway, and Scarlet Begonias really got the place dancing. The second set was really good. Jack Straw opened. Highlights were St. Stephen >The Eleven> Dark Star. Straight from 1967. The Preservation Hall Jazz band found their way to the stage in the middle of Dark Star. The band left for a short break while they did their New Orleans thang. Great stuff, but in the middle of a Dark Star it kinda threw things off for me. Back into Dark Star, the second half of it was a faster, danceable Dark Star. I need to hear this again to decifer. it was definitely different. Help Slip Franklins seems to be old reliable for Phil as he plays it nearly every time I see him (Not a Complaint). Not fade Away closed out the night with PHJB on stage jamming with them. All told, a great night with great people in a local environment. If your a Deadhead, go see Phil play with this band. You wont regret hanging in the same room as Phil hearing old Dead songs you know and love.

The first set was good, but the second set included several jaz players(sax, trumpet) etc. and was a great 2nd set.
