About

Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, Peter Mayer has been quietly and steadily building a fervent following across the country, stepping outside his role as one of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefers to front his own band, The Peter Mayer Group. Melding a unique and eclectic writing style, a distinctive voice, and virtuoso musicianship, Peter and his band create compelling and accessible music that is electrifying in live performance.

Peter's life began in Tamilnadu, the far southern region of India, where his parents served as missionaries for 17 years before returning to their Missouri roots. Musical influences from that period of his life can be heard in his playing. Peter recalls, "I can remember Indian musicians giving Christmas concerts in my parents' house. Wildly playing drums and flutes, shakers and bells, they would go on for hours and hours." He went on to study formal theory and composition, and to teach jazz guitar as a faculty member of Webster University.

Recording under the name PM, Peter released his debut album for Warner Brothers Records in 1988. Working with Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Hornsby), this album features the single "Piece of Paradise," which charted at number eight on Billboard.

When Scheiner was hired to produce Jimmy Buffett's Off to See the Lizard album, he suggested that Jimmy use PM for the recording sessions. Buffett was so impressed with their unique versatility as musicians and performers that he quickly hired them as part of his own Coral Reefer Band, a successful relationship that continues today.

Joining Peter on stage:
Jim Mayer—his brother, who shines on both electric and upright acoustic bass, and has played with a diversity of performers. He has co-written songs on Romeo's Garage and other collaborations with Peter, as well as with Jimmy Buffett.

Roger Guth—drummer for the likes of Jimmy Buffett, Mose Allison and James Moody, and songwriter whose songs have been performed by Vanessa Williams, Jimmy Buffett and others.

Vince Varvel—one of St. Louis' top guitar players, has been a mainstay of the band for four years and brings his brilliant sense of harmony and texture to the group.

Scott Bryan—a talented vocalist, percussionist and multi instrumentalist who comes to the band after touring, recording and songwriting with Sheryl Crow for the last five years. Scott has shared the stage with an impressive array of performers from Sting to the Rolling Stones.

The Peter Mayer Group boasts between them an extensive performing and songwriting portfolio with experience in any number of styles from jazz to country rock to classical.

    What an evening!

by section129 on 8/1/16Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

This show comes to town once a year and I rush to purchase tickets. The energy Peter Mayer Band exerts is beyond amazing. I find myself watching Peter's grimaces as he becomes one with the music. The inclusion of Brendan Mayer, Peter's son, as an opening act is a superb choice. You do not want to miss the next performance in St Louis!

What a treat to have Brendan Mayer open the show. Especially after performing on Jimmy Buffett's recent concert tour. Can't wait for Brendan's first cd. The rest of the show was equally amazing given the talent that was on the stage. Thank you for coming home to share your music!

Peter Mayer Group always the best!!!

by captrick53 on 6/9/14Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

This was an evening of magic that you could feel in the air. Brendan, Peter's son opened and the tone was set as his stage presence captivated the crowd. As a young artist he seems well seasoned and so professional. From there the energy in the room just kept building as PMG came out and was so encouraging about making requests. These are some of the most talented musicians i have ever seen and appreciate how much they put into each and every performance. They always stick around to meet the audience and are so generouos with their time. If you get the chance dont miss them!!!

    Peter Mayer and son, Brendan

by skippper1 on 4/14/13Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

Wow! what a moving experience! Peter Mayer has such a wonderfully talented way to bring emotion to his music, it's full, brimming, and washes over you, leaving you feeling the tension that remains when something catches you and holds you tight, and you've forgotten to breathe property. A warm and rich personality to match, a really wonderful guy.

Peter Mayer Always A Great Performance

by adimeola on 3/25/12Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

Peter Mayer just keeps getting better every time I see him. This was one of the best shows I've seen yet. He was, as always, "spot on"! Seems Peter Mayer keeps refining his songs, it''s such a great pleasure to hear him go through the his song list. His sound is timeless and his playing effortless. I'll never know why he's not playing in large venues, i.e. stadiums. Peter has had a great influence on my own guitar playing over the years. If he was doing another engagement here in St. Louis, I'd go and see him again.

    Amazing Peter Mayer Concert

by RKD4Ever on 8/1/11Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

As always, Peter Mayer and his band were absolutely amazing Friday night in the Duck Room. Would have enjoyed hearing more from R. Scott Bryan, as well, as his opening set was great. Well worth the discomfort of having to stand four hours to experience it. Makes me appreciate the physical toll all that standing must take on the performers. That aside, it was a fantastic evening of music and we were lucky to get tickets to experience it. Our teenaged kids were very disappointed that they couldn't attend. Can't wait for the Christmas concert!

Peter and Group at Top Form!Amazing! 5 STAR

by MsDeni on 9/19/09Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

The evening started with Scott solo teaser which was amazing. Peter was in top form during his concert and Mark surprised us with joining the group through the night. I was thrilled they played Heaven Help Us from Still In One Peace CD. The music variety was excellent from old to newer and a segment from the Beatles WHICH I already embraced the pleasure of hearing at SIUE earlier this year. May I say that Peter sang the vintage songs to perfection! Excellent evening, Peter always gives more than your money is worth and a cherished evening with his band. Each member is top form in the music field. The Best your ears will encounter. We follow Peter and Group through the years and I must say, when you think they cannot get any better, they do! Perfection! See you at Stars and Promises!

by LuckiestGuyinWorld on 9/14/09Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

What a great place to watch a show. Peter was his usual great self, the addition of the string group added a whole new dimention, Mark on his flutes is always a treat, Maggie, can't believe she's in college, Scott, Charlie and the bass player whose name escapes me were all a joy to watch & hear. So great to see a group have that much fun, can't help but get you going too. All in all, a great show.

Great show in an awesome venue - it's great to see an artist having so much fun. Loved hearing the old stuff but really enjoyed the Beatles set, too. We set our calendar around the group's shows at Blueberry Hill, only wish we could see the Peter Mayer group more often.

Peter Mayer Group is worth amazing!!

by Sugarblue on 9/13/09Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

Peter Mayer rewarded the faithful all evening with a mix of old and new originals, combined with some anticipated Beatles covers. The show started with a short but dynamic set from R. Scott Bryan on guitar, setting the electric tone of the evening. Then Peter and the band launched into a set list that had a fun, loose feel making for a terrific show. Right out of the box , Peter gave us, "Last Island", then burst into "Cool Blue Swing". A wonderful rendition of "Heaven Help Us", altered the dynamic of the set at that point and served as a reminder that Peter's music is as diverse and uplifting as ever. "Morningstar Cafe" came as a surprise, followed by "Shall We Dance", then my favorite "Chain of Love". The rocking guitar riffs on "The Onion" really got the audience moving. The second set was devoted to Beatles covers. Maggie Estes along with a small string section provided just the right touch. Peter's beautiful daughter, India, joined the band on stage to sing "Here Comes The Sun". And I was totally struck by Peter's version of "Michelle", hanging on every perfect note. When the audience joined Peter in singing "Penny Lane", his expression was a satisfied smile. The request section included a raucous "BB's Got the Blues", and "Green Eyed Radio" was pure fun. If you haven't been to one of Peter's shows you're missing out on a fantastic evening of feeling alive and connected. I highly recomend it.

Peter Mayer at the Duck Room

by BJK1 on 9/13/09Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

What could be better than a Peter Mayer show in an intimate setting? Pete and the band were on fire. Any one of those musicians could have performed a solo show that would blow your mind...put them all together and it's something out of this world! I had such a blast, I'm going back for the second show tonight!
