About Penn State Nittany Lions Wrestling
One of the most dominant programs in college wrestling today also has a long and sustained record of success in the sport. The Penn State Nittany Lions wrestling team has a claim to nine team national championships, with seven of them coming since 2010 under head coach and 2004 Olympic champion Cael Sanderson.
Penn State has held its own as a member of the Big Ten Conference since 1990, regularly facing such college wrestling powerhouses as Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan, and Minnesota, while also having success dating as far back as the 1920s.
Penn State's wrestlers have combined for 41 individual national championships by 29 wrestlers, and three of them have won the Dan Hodge Trophy as college wrestling's most outstanding athlete. Three of the four wrestlers who have won the Hodge Trophy more than once are connected to Penn State — David Taylor won in 2012 and 2014, Zain Retherford won in 2017 and 2018, and coach Cael Sanderson won three times as a member of the Iowa State Hawkeyes in the early ‘00s.
The Nittany Lions play out of the on-campus Recreation Building, better known as Rec Hall, which seats 6,846 for wrestling. Opened in 1929, the historic arena also was home to Penn State's men's and women's basketball teams until the Bryce Jordan Center opened in 1996. It continues to host PSU's men's and women's gymnastics and volleyball teams.
The Lorenzo Wrestling Complex, named after one of Penn State's most successful coaches, is adjacent to Rec Hall and is a state-of-the-art facility. The complex also is home to the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, one of the world's top amateur wrestling clubs, and designated as a U.S. Olympic Regional Training Center.

Family had a great time cheering on the Nittany Lion wrestling team as they crushed the Michigan Wolverines Friday night at the Bryce Jordan Center. Great venue to watch the nation’s best wrestling team! Looking forward to more matches being scheduled at the BJC.
PSU wrestling at the Bryce Jordan Center is electric! A great event.
My first wrestling experience was awesome, most definitely go again,, from getting tickets to parking pass everything went well
PSU dual at BJC was seamless. Parking was adequately and professionally handled. Staff at the BJC was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Sound and lighting was great, music, "entertainment pieces" and jumbotron all provided a great experience.
Getting the tickets was fine. getting the parking was fine, but had some trouble bringing up the parking passes, not sure if they can be put in the wallet or not. would be nice to have venue tix and parking pass all in 1 spot and be able to be put in wallet. the limited and sold out parking lot for having wrestling and hockey the same night was a bit of a bummer. we drove around a good bit looking for a spot in the large parking lots even though we got there early. Having been in this venue many times for various things, we always enjoy going there. it is well lit, clean, fast processing in, lots of bathrooms but getting out of the building seemed to have issues this time. not sure if not all doors were open but overall great wrestling. I do wish they would put the scores on the big screen.
Let’s be honest, unless you’re on the lower level (we weren’t) at BJC, it’s not worth it to see wrestling there. BJC is devoid of atmosphere to begin with and being in the upper level was a “snooze fest”. BJC continues to be dark and cave-like. Traffic getting into and especially out of BJC was PSU Football-like. Terrible job with parking; we prepaid and no one bothered to check our pass!
This was a great event can't wait to go back this Friday!
The wrestling itself was fantastic. PSU always has a team that gives their best. However, BJC is not a good facility for wrestling. The design of the seating and extra seating layout for wrestling isn’t ideal. At no point during the dual did I feel like the PSU fans volume of noise was overwhelming to the visiting team. This is fully due to the seating arrangement and design. The facility is nice but, again, it does not seem like it was designed with a wrestling dual meet in mind.
The teams were a pleasure to watch, the atmosphere was electrifying, and it was simply the best dual meet I have seen by far.
