Penn State Lady Lions Women’s Basketball History

The Penn State University Lady Lions women’s basketball team first competed during the 1965 season. The Lady Lions qualified for the inaugural women’s national championship tournament in 1982 and reached the Elite Eight in the following year. Coach Rene Portland led the team from 1980 to 2007, earning all eight of the team’s conference tournament championships, eight regular season conference titles, 21 NCAA National Championship appearances, and over 600 wins. The Lady Lions made their deepest tournament run in 2000 with a Final Four finish. Carolyn Kieger joined as head coach in 2019.

Penn State Lady Lions at Bryce Jordan Center

The Lady Lions play in the Bryce Jordan Center, a 15,000-seat multipurpose arena in University Park, Pennsylvania. The stadium opened in 1995, bearing the name of the former university president who'd helped secure the funding to build it. The student section is known as the Legion of Blue, and the Pride of the Lions pep band keeps things lively. Each year, the Lady Lions host the “Pink Zone at Penn State” game in which players and fans wear pink in support of organizations fighting breast cancer.

The Lady Lions are the best ticket in town!

by preacherbabe on 12/11/12Bryce Jordan Center - University Park

An afternoon at the Bryce Jordan Center to watch Coquese Washington's Lady Lions was the perfect way to spend a cold, damp Sunday. The fact that the Lady Lions secured a win was a bonus. Where else can you see talented athletes and eat Penn State Creamery ice cream at the same time?

We live in Easton (Lafayette is in Easton), but drove 3 hours to see Penn State play. My daughter is a huge Lady Lions fan. She met the players this summer at Penn State basketball camp and really wanted to see them play live. We had a fantastic time and really enjoyed the game. We would def. do it again.

The Lady Lions put on a spectacular show by staying with the Hawkeyes the whole game then surging near the end, taking complete control and the win.

    Lady Lion B-Ball Rocks!

by Towson on 11/14/11Bryce Jordan Center - University Park

My 10-year-old son went to see the Lady Lions in their home opener against Washington State. The quality of play was amazing and the score remained tight until the end when our team pulled away. I think my son now has a crush on Maggie Lucas!

    Great venue

by Grendel1999 on 3/24/11Bryce Jordan Center - University Park

The NCAA tournament was very exciting, even though we only stayed for the first half. The ticket price was a little steep compared with the regular season (only negative)

The Lady Lions are amazing. I was impressed by Coach Washington's use of the rest of her players. They all contributed. Maggie Lukas is awesome and Nikki Green did a great job covering Lavender. The Lady Lions were poised throughout the game.
