About Paula Poundstone

Paula Poundstone Live

A genuine original in the world of comedy, Paula Poundstone has been delighting audiences with her sharp, wry and sometimes absurd observations for more than four decades. Named one of the greatest stand-ups of all time by Comedy Central, Poundstone remains a uniquely skilled and versatile talent whose signature brand of comedy is just as treasured by TV viewers, podcast listeners and readers as it is by the crowds she attracts everywhere she performs.

Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Paula Poundstone began her comedy career in Boston in 1979 before moving to San Francisco, where she became a local sensation thanks to her wildly creative improvisational sets. In 1990, she wrote and starred in her first of several specials for HBO, the CableACE award-winner Cats, Cops and Stuff.

In addition to her many TV specials and appearances on late-night talk shows, Poundstone’s film and TV credits include Cybill and Hollywood Squares as well as voice roles in Inside Out and Summer Camp Island. She is the author of There’s Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say (2006) and The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search for Human Happiness (2017). Podcast listeners know her as the host of Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone and as a panelist on NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!.

Famous for never repeating the same show twice thanks to her still-formidable improv skills and love of crowd work, Poundstone continues to perform in clubs and theaters across the U.S. and around the world.

Paula Poundstone Background

Widely considered one of the best and most influential stand-up comedians in the history of American comedy, Paula Poundstone began her five-decade career in Boston in the late 1970s. The unique combination of her sharp and sometimes absurd brand of observational humor and her extraordinary improvisational abilities soon made her a breakout talent in the comedy world.

After moving to Los Angeles upon the suggestion of her fan and supporter Robin Williams, Poundstone became a regular performer on late-night talk shows. In 1990, she appeared in the first in a series of specials for HBO, Cats, Cops and Stuff. Besides winning the CableACE award for Best Stand-up Comedy Special, it was named one of the funniest specials of all time by fellow comedian Tig Notaro, who cites Poundstone as an inspiration.

Poundstone’s wide variety of TV and film appearances include working as a political correspondent for The Tonight Show, having a recurring role opposite Cybill Shepherd on Cybill, and performing voice roles on the animated series Science Court and Home Movies. In 2006, she published her first book, There’s Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say, which was followed in 2017 by The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search for Human Happiness.

In 2016, Poundstone released her third comedy album, North by Northwest: Paula Poundstone Live. She continues to tour extensively and appear on such podcasts as NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! and her own Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone.

    Best time ever

Paule was amazing. Took common mundane experiences, that we all have, and turned them into gut wrenching humor. Best evening of comedy I've had in years.

Great show, per usual for Paula. Was a bit embarrassed by the audience who didn't seem to understand the concept of self edit! Paula handled these dolts expertly.

    Love Her

by OliveHouse on 10/3/09Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Full disclosure: I love Paula Poundstone's brand of self-deprecating, observant, thoughtful humor. I have seen her several times and hope to see her more in the future. I was a fan (and here I'm dating myself) of her short-lived TV show for which I still have tickets which I hold onto in the vain hope that the show will picked up again. I love her stand up routine in which she often mines her own experiences and family and, even more, her political observations - even when she expresses sympathy for Sarah Palin, a sympathy she noted was not shared by the audience. I would go see her just for that. But she is most exciting when she interacts with the audience - improvising chats that are wonderful. She has the ability to chide an audience member ("You do know, Ma'am....) that has the person laughing with the audience. She is astonishingly quick and picks up things like one patron shushing another. Amazingly, she frequently finds coincidences and parallels between patrons. She seemed to be fighting a cold - she claimed allergies (if that's the case maybe she should consider her 13 cats as a source) but it did not get in the way of her connection with the audience who almost literally begged her to stay. She finally noted that soon people would be sneaking out and, "After many years in this business I've learned it's good if I leave first." The Wilbur turned the lights on as soon as she said good night - clearly fearing we would insist on calling her back.

    Paula downsized

by Undergrounds on 10/3/09Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Paula Poundstone has always been better. In this performance she trotted out the exact same material as she put out on a recent late night show. when she became more spontaneous, she rambled on and on, and in frequent stages, about her children. It was like listening to someone's aunt complaining over the back yard fence. Her interaction with the audience was in a couple instances brilliant but overall was filler that went nowhere. At the end, she didn't seem to have any vehicle for ending the show. Overall, the audience liked it but I'd pick a different comedian to see next time.

Paula was great. I wish she had stuck around a little bit longer, but her throat was a bit scratchy so hard to keep talking so long.

    Paula is amazing

    by Paulafan1 on 10/3/09Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Paula Poundstone is amazing. As loyal and long time fans, we go every year to whenever she is perforning in Boston area. Harvard's Sanders Theater, Stoneham Theater, and even the Regent Theater in Arlington, MA were really good venues. Always enjoy when Paula incorporates audience interaction in her show..as she is so brilliant at it. More more! Can't wait to see her again...wherever she is! We ordered tickets from Ticketmaster in March, 2009 for the Oct show, and could only get last row! (really a strain to hear and see).

    Paula Poundstone was awesome!

    by skate5 on 10/3/09Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Paula gave us 2 hours straight of hilarious stories and improv. She relates to her audience by telling stories of real life. She has great energy and as she says "has a very hard time getting off stage!" We loved it!

paula was great, wilbur working out the kinks

by eamathews on 10/3/09Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Great show from Paula, we were lucky enough to get front row center tickets, but were initially blinded by some of the top light. Paula walks on stage and immediately asks the Wilbur to turn down the lights because it looked like the front audience members had been "brought in for questioning." She was funny and kept up the pace for 2 hours! I even got to interact with her---very cool! First night for a liquor license for the Wilbur. Cocktail waitresses only, no walk-up service at the bar. Only got one round of drinks: 2 mixed, a Dewar's (which didn't taste like it), and a water for $30. Waitress never came around again. Tight seating and for us ladies a long line at the bathroom, but it moved quickly.

    Paula Poundstone for your health

by fifibrains on 10/3/09Wilbur Theatre - Boston

They say 'laughter is the best medicine' and, if so, I am going to have a very healthy year. Paula Poundstone is so facile with humor that she can turn the most mundane occurrence into a laugh riot. I've always loved her humor on radio (Wait Wait Don't Tell Me) and on TV, but seeing her live was delightful. I hope she's back in the Hub soon.

    Paula was at her best.

by chesneyostroll on 9/20/09Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

Paula was unbelievable in person. Even though she was not feeling well, she kept us laughing the entire time. I found it hard to believe when the event was over, it did not seem like we were sitting for 2 hours. I could have listened to her for a few more hours and never got bored. She did not loose my attention for one second. I would highly recommend seeing her in person. If you like to be the center of attention, feel free to get seats as close to her as possible. However, be careful.....she will find your weak points. Paula has the courage to make jokes on people most of us wish we had the courage to do so!!!! About the seating...it could have been better. For anyone who has never attended a show at Penns Peak, be warned, you sit on a folding chair that is jammed/cramped against more folding chairs. There was not any room to more or shift, just more chairs. Another word of advice, do not sit anywhere near the rows of chairs out-lining the floor seats. It appears that the people who occupy those seats are more interested in being able to get up and down for beer, than they were to see the show. And with each beer drank, they got louder and more abnoxious than 5 minutes before that. The rude couple we were sitting next too got louder than Paula and made it very difficult to focus on her instead of the drunks!!!!!!

    Paula - come play Philadelphia

by ManayunkJane on 9/19/09Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

Paula Poundstone delivered a very entertaining, intelligent and witty 2 hours - - especially the repartee with the audience -- which was even funnier than the crafted and rehearsed stories.

    Paula Poundstone

by PattyInNJ on 9/19/09Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

laughed a lot, funny enough, I think Paula was in a lot of discomfort/pain. A lot of coughing and back pain, but she put a good effort into entertaining. The live show was slower moving than any of the televised shows I've seen
