Concert started on time at 8:05 ended about 10:40 with no breaks.
Pat came out with his Picasso 42 string guitar and played an amazing song. Then brought out the Unity band, they played 5 songs or so including Roofdogs, and the PMG song James. The crowd was very enthusiastic. He introduced the band and songs.. then brought out the newest member Giulio Carmassi on keyboards, who has been billed as a multi-instrumentalist. The piano was at the back of the stage behind the drums. He never moved from the keyboards, no other instruments were played by him.
He could barely be seen, all that was visible was his head. The lid of the grand piano was opened towards the back of the stage, very unusual for a performance. He was hard to hear and see! That may have been part of the play because the piano sounded bad, not his playing (as he was hard to hear) but the sound of the piano itself... once again very strange... Lyle Mays keyboard instruments always sounded great when he was in the band.
The PMUG played cuts from their new album KIN, the audience gave two standing ovations during this section of the show. Pat was playing great and the band members
were all in sync with each other. Pat played duos with all the other band members.. the best of the bunch was Pat and Ben Williams version of Bright Side Life... the weakest was Pat and Giulios.
A couple of other comments... The Orchestrion was used (some would say overused) during the PMUG part of the concert... flashing lights let the audience know what instruments were being played... it seemed to me that at times it was getting in the way
of the music the real musicians were playing. Plus poor Giulio stashed back there on keyboards seemed outclassed by the rest of these fine musicians. Perhaps this is why Pat chose to hide him away. Lyle Mays was sorely missed... hopefully he will be back
for the next album.
Overall a good concert... recommended for all Pat Metheny fans, with
caveats for the Orchestrion and Giulio's performance.
