    Pat Metheny and Unity Group

by jccj9 on 3/13/14Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

The concert hall, Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor was packed and hot. The sound was good, the seats were adequate. The music was great. Pat Metheny and the Unity Group played for over two and a half hours. There was little time between songs and no unnecessary banter with the audience. These musicians gave their all through the whole concert. I would like to see them again.

Amazing performance by a genuine and most humble jazz musician I've ever seen. Thanks for the show.

Ann Arbor Pat Metheny Unity Group concert

by CHKM on 3/13/14Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

Concert started on time at 8:05 ended about 10:40 with no breaks. Pat came out with his Picasso 42 string guitar and played an amazing song. Then brought out the Unity band, they played 5 songs or so including Roofdogs, and the PMG song James. The crowd was very enthusiastic. He introduced the band and songs.. then brought out the newest member Giulio Carmassi on keyboards, who has been billed as a multi-instrumentalist. The piano was at the back of the stage behind the drums. He never moved from the keyboards, no other instruments were played by him. He could barely be seen, all that was visible was his head. The lid of the grand piano was opened towards the back of the stage, very unusual for a performance. He was hard to hear and see! That may have been part of the play because the piano sounded bad, not his playing (as he was hard to hear) but the sound of the piano itself... once again very strange... Lyle Mays keyboard instruments always sounded great when he was in the band. The PMUG played cuts from their new album KIN, the audience gave two standing ovations during this section of the show. Pat was playing great and the band members were all in sync with each other. Pat played duos with all the other band members.. the best of the bunch was Pat and Ben Williams version of Bright Side Life... the weakest was Pat and Giulios. A couple of other comments... The Orchestrion was used (some would say overused) during the PMUG part of the concert... flashing lights let the audience know what instruments were being played... it seemed to me that at times it was getting in the way of the music the real musicians were playing. Plus poor Giulio stashed back there on keyboards seemed outclassed by the rest of these fine musicians. Perhaps this is why Pat chose to hide him away. Lyle Mays was sorely missed... hopefully he will be back for the next album. Overall a good concert... recommended for all Pat Metheny fans, with caveats for the Orchestrion and Giulio's performance.

    Great concert again

by momandkid on 3/11/14Topeka Performing Arts Center - Topeka

The Metheny Unity sound (5 musicians) was somewhat reminiscent of 1980's saxophone style fusion music. About half of the songs and arrangements were constructed for live entertainment rather than for relaxed listening. Since my preference is for earlier Metheny songs, I was pleased that this group played a number of these classics during the concert also. Metheny brought his usual genius. The sax player was great. The bass player could have invested in new strings (or maybe that was just his muted style). The sound level was perfect (I didn't need ear plugs). Metheny does not give concerts in this area often (Topeka), so this performance was very special for me and my son. I would have preferred to see his larger group with Lyle Mays, but those concerts might never come around again...too bad.

    Great Group

by rogerzoomer on 3/11/14Topeka Performing Arts Center - Topeka

Hadn't seen Pat Metheny for probably 15 or 20 years. Seats were great, tickets very resonable. Two and a half hours of music with no break.

Just the best of the best. If you never have seen Pat you really need to. Everyone in the band is great and the blend of old and new music makes it a great show. Can't recommend it highly enough. Just don't miss a chance to see these guys live!!!

Pat Metheny Unity Band/Group the Best

by GPeter on 3/11/14Topeka Performing Arts Center - Topeka

The show opened and closed with Pat Metheny solos. I've seen Pat with Trios, solo (One Quiet Night tour), first time 1988 on the Pat Metheny Group Travels tour. It was an exceptional show, and such a nice mix of new and old.

Pat Metheny should be on everyone's bucket list.

by Anonymous on 3/11/14Topeka Performing Arts Center - Topeka

I have lost track on how many times I have now seen Pat Metheny perform live, but one thing is for certain, every tour is unique. Pat is not showing any sign of age with his innovation of guitar. The Unity Group is a nice mix with Pat, but I am ready to see the PMG arise again with Pat next to Lyle.

show for people that adore exceptional guitar play

by skidam2 on 3/11/14Topeka Performing Arts Center - Topeka

People in Kansas area missed out. Venue holds 2400 people, only 350 @ most were there, but Pat Metheny is a pro and played like 10,000 were in attendance. Wish I could catch this show again in another city. His new band (Unity Group), are really in cink. Doug D

Pat Metheny Unity Group - Exceptional

by Anonymous on 3/9/14Chandler Center for the Arts - Chandler

I've seen every Pat Metheny tour since the mid-80's and this was one of the best. Excellent mix of new and old music, performed exceptionally. The Orchestrion is becoming a vital part of the act - I was unconvinced at first, but feel it adds an additional layer or two to the overall sound. Kin is the closest to a PMG album in years which pleases me. I certainly miss Lyle and Steve and hope to hear/see them soon.

The new Unity Band knocks it out of the park!

by PhoenixDon15 on 2/26/14Chandler Center for the Arts - Chandler

Pat Metheny and the current Unity Band define what it means to improvise. Within the tight structure of Metheny's complex melodies the band members, especially saxman Chris Potter, went to amazing places in this show. Metheny started solo on the Pikasso guitar, then was joined by the other members. They played three numbers from the original Unity Band album then went through most of the music from their current CD "Kin" They finished with a great version of "Have you heard?" and did the first encore with "Are you going with me" The crowd wouldn't let him leave so he came out and did a solo acoustic medley of his melodies. Twice during the concert the crowd stood up in the middle of the number, so good was the improvisations they were enjoying. I've seen Pat about 14 times over the last 34 years and this was as good a show as he has ever presented.

Pat Metheny Unity Group - 2/23/2014 - Chandler, AZ

by Anonymous on 2/26/14Chandler Center for the Arts - Chandler

Pros: virtuosity of musicianship, great sound Cons: I was a little disappointed in the length of the set and the set list. I saw the Unity Band in Sep 2012 and the same songs from that album were done as they were then which made it seem a little redundant; even the encores were the same. There were a few songs from Kin but would have preferred more. Also, it was difficult to hear the new player's keyboards in the mix. The set was two hours including the encores. I read where another show was two and a half hours; maybe it was shorter because it wasn't a sold-out show but I hope that's not true.
