About

Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny is one of the most renowned artists of his generation. Across nearly 50 years, the endlessly creative Metheny has released 11 solo albums, 13 albums with his band The Pat Metheny Group, four live albums, and four compilation albums, and has won a whopping 20 Grammys. Specializing in contemporary jazz, Latin jazz, and jazz fusion, Metheny is the only person in history to win Grammys in 12 different categories.

Born in 1954 in Lee Falls, Missouri, Metheny (who is the younger brother of trumpeter Mike Metheny), began playing guitar at age 12. As a teenager, he taught at the University of Miami and Berklee College of Music and made his recording debut in 1974 with Paul Bley and Jaco Pastorius.

In the mid '70s, Metheny played in Gary Burton's group, where he met keyboardist Lyle Mays. The two ended up forming The Pat Metheny Group with bassist Mark Egan and drummer Dan Gottlieb. A risk-taking jazz player, Metheny's 1980 album 80/81 featured avant-garde tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman and 15-time-Grammy-winning jazz saxophonist/composer Michael Brecker. A few years later, Metheny formed a trio with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins; and 1985 saw the release of Song X with his jazz hero Ornette Coleman. Around this time, Metheny also collaborated with Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, Roy Haynes, and Joshua Redman.

In the '90s, Metheny leaned into his experimental side even further with the noise-driven Zero Tolerance For Silence (1994). That same year, he also made his Blue Note Records debut with John Scofield on I Can See Your House From Here. The following year, Metheny and his band released We Live Here. Prolific as ever, Metheny released 1996's Quartet and his score for the film Passaggio Per Il Paradiso.

In 1997, Metheny and bassist Charlie Haden recorded an acoustic album as a duo called Beyond The Missouri Sky (Short Stories). Soon after, The Pat Metheny Group released the album Imaginary Day. In the late '90s, Metheny did a duet album with Jim Hall and scored Warner Bros.' A Map Of The World.

Moving into the 21st century, Metheny and his band released 2002's Speaking Of Now, 2003's acoustic solo album One Quiet Night, and got the group back together for 2005's Way Up. In 2006, Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau released their joint album, Metheny Mehldau, and followed it up with 2008's Day Trip.

Into the 2010s, Metheny remained as prolific as ever, releasing 2010's Orchestrion, which, via the use of a MIDI-powered "robot" orchestra, Sound On Sound declared "an unparalleled technological feat." In 2011, Metheny released a solo acoustic album, What's It All About, featuring covers of contemporary pop performers such as Paul Simon and John Lennon, among others. What's It All About won a Grammy for Best New Age Album. In 2012, Metheny teamed up with saxophonist Chris Potter, drummer Antonio Sánchez, and bassist Ben Williams to release Unity Band, which won Best Jazz Instrumental album at the Grammys in 2013.

In spring 2013, Metheny reimagined works from John Zorn's Masada Book Two with Tap: Book of Angels Volume 20. All the while, his Unity Group continued touring and went back into the studio, releasing Kin in February 2014. The next year, Metheny paid tribute to the famed bassist Eberhard Weber, who suffered a stroke in 2007 and has not performed live since. Metheny shared the stage with saxophonist Jan Garbarek and vibraphonist Gary Burton, and the tribute, Hommage à Eberhard Weber, was released in September 2015.

In more recent years, Metheny has released 2016's Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny (with trumpeter Cuong Vu) and toured the world for two years as a quartet with Sánchez, Malaysian/Australian bassist Linda May Han Oh, and pianist Gwilym Simcock. Their debut album, From This Place, was released in February 2020.

In 2020, Metheny left longtime label WEA/Nonesuch and joined BMG's Modern Recordings. His 2021 label debut, Road To The Sun, featured Metheny in the composer role; he wrote music for classical guitarist Jason Vieaux and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. Also in 2021, Metheny released Side-Eye NYC (V1.IV), which featured a rotating cast of younger musicians, including drummer Marcus Gilmore and keyboardist James Francies.

    Amazing - Mind-blowing - Beautiful

by Fansince1981 on 4/14/10Nokia Theatre At Grand Prairie - Grand Prairie

Pat Metheny brought his 12-foot wall of Orchestrion instruments, all triggered and controlled from the stage, and played almost 3 hours of amazing music, with his trademark melodies and mind-blowing chord changes and harmonies. His guitar was accompanied by a multitude of percussion instruments, bottles with blowers on them that sounded like wood flutes, xylophone, bells, piano, guitar and bass - all played mechanically by solenoid and computer - connected to his guitar and foot pedals. His grand Orchestrion experiment is an amazing success, and still almost beyond belief. But, it's the music he writes and plays that is what won over the crowd, and even through pieces lasting 10 or 15 minutes all were transfixed and mesmerized, and gave Pat several standing ovations throughout the evening, mostly for brand new music - not the familiar classics from the first 20 years of his career (1975-1995). Once in a lifetime event and performance from the finest musician on the scene today.

    Wow!

by Zenseeker on 4/14/10Nokia Theatre At Grand Prairie - Grand Prairie

I was very impressed with the beginning acoustical presentation; it was lovely. I did not know what to expect and wondered when I did not see the rest of the band. I enjoyed the play-it-itself band Pat brought along;his creation, and his explanation of such. I hadn't heard him speak to the audience before. I've seen other concerts where the music was so far-out I couldn't connect, and this was classic compared to those.

    PAT Metheny

by RCjazzman on 4/14/10Nokia Theatre At Grand Prairie - Grand Prairie

Pat Metheny absolutely sucked. If I wanted to hear piped in music I would have stayed at home. I really want my money back it was that bad. I overheard a guy in the restroom say that he had seem Pat Metheny 6 times and this was the worst. I could have gotten better pleasure by listening to the cd. There is nothing like a live performance.

Pat Metheny awesome, but without band its dry

by DigitalRockSongs on 4/14/10Nokia Theatre At Grand Prairie - Grand Prairie

Pat Metheny with mechanical midi and servo instruments behind him - all programmed by him. It was good, and the first 1/2 was interesting, but I miss the back and forth of a real band. The piano was not mixed well and the low end was missing - at least where we sat. i wont go see Pat Metheny again until he has the whole group with him. Even so i would recommend going to this tour because it is interesting.

I won't give away the plot, but this was amazingly amazing! Pat continues to break new ground in performance. Make sure you catch this show live. I hope at the end of the tour, he releases this on DVD. I will buy a copy for all my friends.

    Technically excellent...

by DJ4MC on 4/14/10Nokia Theatre At Grand Prairie - Grand Prairie

OK, I read reviews of what Pat has done with the "Robot" Orchestra. Most focused on the technical aspects of it. Now I know why. The music was very eclectic and not very melodic. I like Pat Metheny and saw him about 30 years ago. My wife was ready to shoot herself by the end of the concert. That said, the sound was top notch and I enjoyed the show. It was not worth what I paid to see it and the actual entertainment value was not there. So... If you know what you are getting into, go see it. If you are expecting what I was, do not. Pat is extremely gifted but out there. It is almost like he had to build this as finding musicians willing to play his stuff would have been hard...

Pat Metheny was awesome as usual!

by Feylana on 4/14/10Nokia Theatre At Grand Prairie - Grand Prairie

Very enjoyable concert. It is amazing to see someone at his age continuing to be so innovative. No wonder he has won so many Grammys. He is a true virtuoso on the guitar. Go see him next time he comes to your city.

    Thank You Pat!

by drumz101 on 4/13/10Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

What a treat! Pat Metheny sharing his toys with other kids. Good stuff. The Orchestrion Concert was truely a wonderful experience. I know Pat will continue to interact with "real" players, but it was marvelous to watch and listen to him interacting with The Orchestrion. Pat opened with a few captivating solo guitar pieces before introducing The Orchestrion. He played a unique Baritone Guitar that had bass strings that resonated some bass frequencies that in and of themselves evoked audience reaction. Pat played like the true harmonic and rhythmic craftsmen that he is. His performance on the "harp" guitar was also very special. Wow, what incredible technique, delivered with such great temperment and grace. You must experience Pat and Orchestrion "in person". It's like watching a big music "machine" that seems at times that it could "takeoff" into the air right off the stage. Pat's comittment to the music and the technical feat are of the highest level. He performs as if he were interacting with "The Group". 150% comittment each and every night. What a pro. We should all thank his wife and family for letting him play this game. Thanks again Pat, for sharing Orchestrion. God Bless you, your family, and ALL of your crazed TECHS!

    Better Than Ever!

by blmill on 4/13/10Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

I have seen Pat several times over the last 25 years and this was his best performance ever. Although I enjoy the rest of his band-mates (Lyle Mays is terrific), this show really focused on Pat's playing and it was exceptional. Technically, the Orchestrion is an amazing system from an engineering standpoint, but it never overshadowed the human element and complemented his playing throughout the evening.

fascinating show but hard on the ears at times

by cabinetsfast on 4/13/10Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

Pat Metheney is a brilliant... talented musician. The mechanized "orchestra" he has created is a work of genius. However, a good bit of the music performed was hard to listen to and enjoy because his improvisational style is somewhat disjointed and reckless. I realize that this can be the nature of improvisational jazz and may apeal to others very much, but I was looking for a little more melodic structure. All the pieces were quite long, so when it was bad, it nearly drove us to leave. We stuck around hopning that the best was yet to come... never really happened. I was fascinated with and appreciate the the creativity and technical savvy of this performer, but most of the time it just wasn't my style. I have a couple CDs by Metheny and there was some resemblance at times but not often. We were expecting "music" but felt that there was just disjointed collection noise about 80% of the show. Sorry, I hoped for better.

    Pure Genius!

by FloridaRocker on 4/12/10Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

I have been a fan of Pat Metheny for a long time. This latest project is typical Pat. He never seems to get old or stuck in a rut. I had learned about this concert a week before it was to happen and was excited to hear he would be in the Gainesville, FL area. I checked out his website to see what the tour was about and was amazed at what I saw and heard. Pat first came out and did a few solo guitar numbers and then he brought to life the Orchestrion! As the curtain went up, towering above the stage was a mammoth collection of percussion and musical instruments all connected with wires and lights playing at Pat's command. The 2 1/2 hour program went by too quickly as you sat there and watched and listened to this genius make this monstrosity of instruments play with surgical precision. He went on to explain how it worked and what the background was behind the project. Everyone left there in awe of this musical genius. I was at first a little leery about what I'd hear when I first got there, but after being there and hearing and seeing this performance I was glad I went. I would highly recommend that anyone that is a Pat Metheny fan go see this show and if you are a techno geek you'll love just seeing this thing work.

Pat Metheny's Orchestrion project was genius

by Gainesvillereview on 4/12/10Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

Genius coming from a man with vision and the talent to create it and back it up. This was one one of the most original and enjoyable shows I have ever been to. What a nice surprise. Hard to describe, best to just go and find out for yourself.

    Metheny sets a precedent

by Shaft on 4/12/10The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater - Miami Beach

This man is truly gifted. I guess when you get to his level, you can do whatever kind of tour you want! What started as a curiosity with player pianos, evolved into an artificial intelligence experiment with 50 assorted instruments. If that doesn't impress you, then listen to him actually play the guitar(s). Every time I listen to the Orchestrion CD, I'm reminded of his invicibility...

The programed music started off good but it got old and emotionless real fast. Pat's playing could of been more enhance with a live band and the playing of a few of his jazz hits.

GIVES "PLAYING WITH YOURSELF" NEW MEANING

by BOLDFART on 4/11/10The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater - Miami Beach

No one with any appreciation of Pat Metheny, musical innovation and a love of jazz or even "new wave" genres should miss this one. It is spectacular and thought provoking. The music, in the end, lacks the spontaneity and the give and take that provides what many of us jazz fans value in ensemble music. As a solo performance, it is amazing. I believe that his facility with improvisation with these incredible "toys" will improve. He is "PAT," after all. I only dosed off, once.
