Excellent and Unique

Even you don't care for it or it isn't your thing, any human on the planet certainly must recognize the creativity and innovation that group embodies, and if you have a heartbeat at least your toe is tapping. We're just built that way. PANDEMONIUM is an outstanding next step in the evolution of this music and takes a full turn into melody. There must have been twenty-plus performers, and in STOMP-like fashion each of them had a part to play as they leaped and skipped among the many massive set-piece instruments that decorated the stage, and in STOMP-like fashion their roles constantly changed, often with one person playing only one note of a complete melody, the rest being played individually by other performers in a carousel of creative ways. The performance was woven together like a symphony, with the dance choreography linked to the percussive, marimba-like music. Every instrument on stage, whether a horn created by connecting garden hoses to oil funnels, or a large bass marimba created by connecting large wood panels to open 5-gallon water bottles was all tuned to a specific set of keys so that no matter if you were playing bicycle horns or banging on pressure cookers everything was in tune, the melodies haunting and powerful. I really can't imagine what it takes to choreograph a show like that, but they did a superb job and it was highly entertaining. Between the music, choroegraphy and timing I started to feel almost like I was at a Cirque du Soleil show, the music had a very carnival feel - and it made me think what interesting natural allies these groups would be... This was an outstanding show in all regards, perhaps with the caveat that the songs did get a bit on a repetative side - but hey - if you've never before seen a human marimba (and I don't imagine many people have), or six people all play the saw at the same time; it's worth the price of the ticket. And sit close.
