Orlando Magic History

Joining the NBA in the 1989 expansion era, the Magic struggled for three years until picking center Shaquille O'Neal first in the 1992 draft. The Magic finished at .500 in the 1992–93 season, barely missing the playoffs. Then, with only a slim chance in the 1993 draft lottery, the team won the rights to pick No. 1 again. They used their selection, Chris Webber, in a trade to obtain guard Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway and future picks.

O’Neal and Hardaway led the Magic to 50 wins in the 1993–94 season and then 57 victories, as well as a trip to the NBA Finals, the following year. In the 1995–96 campaign, the Magic won a franchise-record 60 games in what would be O'Neal's last season in Orlando. They made it to the Eastern Conference finals against the Chicago Bulls.

Over the next 10 years, the Magic made the playoffs five times under the leadership of coach Doc Rivers and Hall of Fame guard Tracy McGrady, who earned two scoring titles and the 2001 Most Improved Player award during his tenure. The 2006–07 season saw Orlando start a run of six consecutive postseason appearances, as star center Dwight Howard blossomed and the Magic surrounded him with young talent and savvy veterans.

The Magic reached the second round of the playoffs in 2008 behind Howard and forwards Hidayet "Hedo" Türkoğlu and Rashard Lewis. The following season, with trade acquisition Rafer Alston filling in for injured point guard Jameer Nelson and sharpshooter J.J. Redick taking on a more prominent role, the team won 59 games and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, the Boston Celtics and the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs. It earned the Magic a second trip to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Following Howard’s trade to the Lakers in 2012, the Magic began a decade-long rebuilding process while developing notable talents like Victor Oladipo, Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vučević. The Magic’s luck seemed to improve after reaching playoff contention once again in 2019 and 2020, and landing top draft picks such as Mo Bamba, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, and 2023 Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero.

  • Magic vs CAVS Playoffs are Great !!!!!!!

by LMAN on 7/13/09Amway Arena - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

NBA Playoffs are some of the greatest sports events. Especially when it is with some of the best players ever played....HOWARD and KING JAMES. The fans are great, the festivities are great, both inside and out. We got to the game 2 hour early to get parking and enjoy the entertainment out side. If you are going to attend only one NBA game a year, a playoff game is the best entertainment value for the buck. I was emotionaly exhausted when we left. Will take my son again next year

by Witness on 7/13/09Amway Arena - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

It was a long 14 years, but was good to see the Magic get back to the NBA Finals. A lot of fun at the playoffs this year, and that dude Simon who plays the music in the arena had more game than Lebron James.

  • Magic did a magical trick

    by dloor01 on 7/13/09Amway Arena - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

I've been to numerous playoff games. However watching the Magic win on Overtime against the Cleveland Cavs was incredible. The energy and the atmosphere in the arena was incredible. Hopefully with the new additions, we can be there again next year and this time win it all.

  • Family Outing

by unreal on 7/13/09Amway Arena - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

My family and I had the time of our life, Including my 11/2 yr old daughter. The excitement was like something from the Hoosier movies. To see Dwight with his thunderess dunks, Rashard shotting the light out from everwhere, Turk killing everone on him from the right and left, and Skip to My Lou groovin like he was in a And-One video. Not to mention the defense and offense of Pietrus. Once agian it was the most exciting basket game I've ever witness.

  • Winning the Eastern Conference was Incredible!

by CoachB on 7/13/09Amway Arena - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

My son and I had the time of our lives watching the Magic make King James and his Cav crew disappear from the play-offs! Every aspect of the game was phenomenal - from the players, to the Magic Dancers, and to the fans! It was truly a FANtastic event!

  • Eastern conference final were awsome

    by Jules4Magic on 7/13/09Amway Arena - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

The venue, the players, coaches, and fans were all incredible. The electricity in the arena was amazing. We had good seats in the upper deck, but there really isn't a bad seat. The temperature was good, the food was good, and the drinks were good. Restrooms and concessions are very convenient. Can not go wrong here!

  • I was a witness to the beating of King James

by magicfan on 7/13/09Amway Arena - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

This was the fourth game of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals. I went with my son and it was a lot of fun. The atmosphere was electric, much more so than in a regular season game. The best part of it was that we were able to beat the Cavaliers and their super star LeBron James, even though we were not given a chance of doing so by the specialized media and the so called "experts".

  • Orlando Magic Kicked Butt
