    Great Concerto

by Bayouvisitor on 7/12/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

Joshua Bell was a joy to listen to and the orchestra was superb. The only thing keeping this from being a five star event was the second half of the program. The selection of the Bruckner symphony after intermission did not mesh well with the Mendelssohn Concerto. The performance was excellent but the mood too heavy in my opinion.

    An amazing performance

by Shadow08 on 7/12/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

My husband and I and a friend attended Joshua Bell's performance in Portland on May 8. I reserved seats months in advance just to make sure I was able to attend. It was well worth it! Bell is an amazing musician. The Mendelssohn violin concerto was beautiful. Bell' is obviosly techinically very competent but he is so much more. His touch is light and lyrical. His "persona" is open and without pretense. He seems very easy and comfortable in his skin and there is no aura of inflated ego or distance . The Oregon Symphony under Carlos Kalmar did its usual wonderful job. The synergy between Bell and Kalmar was obvious to see and a pleasure to experience.
