Oregon Ducks Men's Basketball History

The University of Oregon men's basketball team was created in the 1902-03 season. High levels of success came for the program after Howard Hobson took over as head coach in 1935. Four years into Hobson's tenure, the Oregon Ducks became the first team to win the National Championship as part of the inaugural NCAA Basketball Championship Game in 1939. Due to their collective height advantage over every other team in the country, the Oregon championship team became known as "The Tall Firs."

Over the years, the Ducks have also enjoyed several more strong eras. In the early 1970s when Dick Harter became head coach, his Kamikaze Kids teams, known for their swarming style of play, twice won 20 games in a single season and also made three consecutive National Invitation Tournament appearances. In 1974, they upset John Wooden's No. 1 UCLA Bruins. Ernie Kent, who was one of the Kamikaze Kids, was hired as head coach in 1997 and helped guide the Ducks to the NCAA Tournament five times between 2000 and 2008, with Elite Eight runs in 2002 and 2007.

Since coach Dana Altman took over in 2010, Oregon has netted nine of the program’s 19 total NCAA Tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight berth in 2016 and Final Four finish in 2017. During their tenure in the Pac-12 and its predecessor conferences, the Oregon men’s basketball team claimed eight total regular season conference championships and six conference tournament championships, capped by the tournament win during their final membership season in 2024. Additionally, the Ducks have competed in 13 editions of the National Invitation Tournament and won the inaugural College Basketball Invitational tournament in 2011.

  • Exhilarating

by Emra on 2/14/22Matthew Knight Arena - EugeneRating: 5 out of 5

It was wonderful as a family night out. My two sons love basketball and it was the first time they watched a tournament in Eugene. As early teenagers, there are not many moments when they get excited about outgoings (as it means away from screen time :) but this was a truly memorable and enjoyable time for them. Seeing the joy on their faces made me happy :)

  • masks

    by P. W. on 11/12/21Matthew Knight Arena - EugeneRating: 5 out of 5

Less than half the people in attendance actually wore a mask while watching the game. How about enforcing the mask mandate or scrapping it altogether? It's a joke.

  • Oregon vs Utah Men's Basketball

by Memaw on 2/19/20Matthew Knight Arena - EugeneRating: 5 out of 5

Great view of the court, the view we were shown on the app was exactly what our view was. We enjoyed it so much we bought tickets for the Civil War! Go Ducks!

  • Exciting

by Duck Fan on 2/17/20Matthew Knight Arena - EugeneRating: 5 out of 5

It was an awesome game. Great effort by our Duck Men's team to clamp down on defense to shut down the Buffaloes and at the same time drop their shots and come from behind to win the game.

  • Great seats, great venue, great team

    by mjb430 on 1/29/20Matthew Knight Arena - EugeneRating: 5 out of 5

Matt Court is a great place to watch Ducks basketball. Our seats were great, the free shuttle from Autzen Stadium worked well, and the Ducks played great (first half anyway; coasted in the second).

  • More info would have helped

by Rick on 1/26/20Matthew Knight Arena - EugeneRating: 5 out of 5

Great event and staff. When I purchased the tickets (and I went back and looked), it said nowhere that purses aren’t allowed ... causing me a long walk in the rain back to the car to drop off my girlfriend’s purse. Admission folks were very helpful. I politely complained and none of us could find a notice about purses. It’s a small thing for me, but for some it could have been a real hardship.

I am a disabled veteran and my disability flared up so bad that I had to stay home. I was very disappointed.

  • Ticketmaster is the best

by Billy Sports on 11/25/19Matthew Knight Arena - EugeneRating: 5 out of 5

I love the follow through! Ticketmaster is the ONLY place I would ever consider getting tickets. I live in a small area and don't have access to big events like others living in more populated areas of the state. Ticketmaster has great follow through and the tickets are great. Thanks Ticketmaster for your promptness and making me feel at ease with my purchase. I WILL order from Ticketmaster again...

  • UO Basketball event

by webfut on 12/20/16Moda Center - PortlandRating: 2 out of 5

The games were great. We enjoyed watching the men's and women's team play in PDX. When I purchased the tix the availability was limited to the Club Level, yet the stadium was only 40% occupied! I wish we had better seating! The worst experience was the lack of concessions in the entire arena. No concessions were available on the Club Level! THEN, WE WAITED 40 MINUTES FOR BURGERS AT THE CRAFTERS GRILL - SO UNORGANIZED! MANY COMPLAINTS BY CUSTOMERS WERE GIVEN! AN AWFUL EXPERIENCE! Disappointed with the lack of UO presence - no cheerleaders, limited band. It felt like a half-hearted effort. Did not inspire me as a Duck fan who bleeds green. I recommend this event only because it was a great opportunity to watch my teams play. The ancillary experience; seating, concessions, UO hype experience were horrible.
