    Empty seats

by S. B. on 4/26/22DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Tried to get specific seats or seats in a specific area but none were available. At the performance 25% of the seats I was looking for (30-40) were empty. Can’t believe they were no-shows ($97/ticket)

    Night at the Opera

by GBJohn on 4/25/22DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

The performance of "Turandot" was excellent, well worth the trip to see it. Seating was comfortable and easy to view the stage. Acoustics were perfect, as well. Being connected to the hotel (Amway Grand) via a climate-controlled walkway was icing on the cake since it was raining heavily that night.

    Great evening

by Newbie on 4/25/22DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Opera Grand Rapids performance of Turnadot at DeVos Performance Hall was our first opera experience. It was all we expected and some. Covid delayed the event for nearly two years, but we were glad we persevered to attend. The hall is very good acoustically, and the performers did very well. The costumes, staging of the set, orchestra, and audience all made for an enjoyable evening.

Excellent work that sticks with you

by Jjonas on 3/2/22Peter Martin Wege Theatre - Grand Rapids

I haven’t missed a show in 5 years. The most recent was Stinney. I regret not reading into it ahead of time because it caught me off guard being as dark and powerful as it was. I have never had a show stick with me as much as this one did. The whole production did an amazing job presenting this story.

Performance great, covid red tape boo

by Bowie fan on 10/27/21DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

My whole group thoroughly enjoyed the performance. The singers, musicians and set were stupendous. Having to mask was cumbersome and distracting as was having to show vaccine status. We will not be returning until this is lifted.

    It was ok

by Mike on 10/26/21DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

I didn't realize that the Opera had been modernized. I don't remember reading anywhere that it was modernized and I have known it was I would not have gone. The music was still exceptional the orchestra did fantastically well. But delay '80s costumes and the modern dialogue was quite a bit of a letdown.

    Good performance logistics annoying

by Laura S on 10/25/21DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Went to the first showing for the GR Opera in 2 years. They haven’t performed since pre-pandemic. However, I felt like their Covid rules were not inline with the current regional state. I went to a Michael Buble concert that required proof of vaccination, but did not mandate masks a couple weeks ago here. I can name countless places where vaccine cards are required, but the masks have been relaxed. I only state this because the mask honestly ruined the entire experience for me. I wear glasses, and it kept fogging up the entire time. Granted, I should have thought this through, and prepared- but I did not realize masks were required once sitting down. It is what it is. I left after the intermission broke. It makes no sense to have this requirement in Oct 2021. And to not allow refunds prior to announcing these requirements is pretty crummy too.

    Opera Grand Rapids "The Mikado"

by GR Seniors on 11/5/19Royce Auditorium at St. Cecilia Music Center - Grand Rapids

This is the first time we attended an event at this venue. The auditorium was charming. There is no orchestra pit so the musicians were at the back of the stage. The sound for both orchestra and singers was good. The orchestra seemed very good. The singing and acting was very good. The production was a bit unusual in that the costumes were English period (1800s?) instead of the usual "Japanese" style. The referenced to Japan were also "scrubbed" from the lyrics. I am assuming this had to do with trying not to be offensive to the Asian population, as I have read that some find this operetta racist. I did not find the changes made much difference to my enjoyment of the production, but I did notice them. It was kind of weird that those changes were made but the music has a definite oriental quality and the fake Japanese names were still used. I can't imagine anyone would think that G & S meant this as a realistic representation of Japanese people or culture, but I understand why some would take offence. Overall, a very pleasant evening of theater and worth the price of admission.

    One of the best

by Operalover on 6/21/19Royce Auditorium at St. Cecilia Music Center - Grand Rapids

The venue was smaller than DeVos but more intimate and the sound quality was still great. It was a bit difficult to read the subtitles but all seats gave an equally amazing view of the show. The soprano, baritone and tenor were magnificent! Loved it and had the opportunity to share it with a first time opera goer too!

    Incredible talent!

by Verdadera on 10/16/17DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

This was a first rate production from the singers and costumes to the settings. The tenor and baritone were especially amazing and all of us enjoyed the Friday night performance from the first "A" to the final standing ovation. Well done Opera GR!

    Amazing opera experience!

by Jejunes on 5/18/17DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

The Barber of Seville was a delight in every aspect. Every performer was incredible to the extent that I couldn't pick a favorite if I tried! Costumes and lighting were very well-done, and the 3 people I brought with me haven't stopped talking about it a week after!

    Verdi's Requiem at DeVos

by MarleyRobert on 11/2/15DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Absolutely wonderful. I've seen this performed a few times in my life so far and this was definitely one of the best performances. DeVos is probably my favorite venue next to the Chicago Opera house. Guest stars were great but my favorite was the Soprano. This was my first time to see this conductor and he was marvelous. Delightful occasion!!
