About

Opera Atelier is North America’s premier period opera/ballet company, producing the opera, ballet and drama of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. While drawing upon the aesthetics and ideals of the period, Opera Atelier goes beyond “reconstruction” and infuses each production with an inventive theatricality that resonates with modern audiences. Led by founding artistic directors Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg since 1985, Opera Atelier has garnered acclaim for its performances at home as well as in the United States, Europe and Asia.

    Alcina was first rate

by Operaaficianado on 11/3/14Elgin Theatre - Toronto

The Opera Atelier production of Handel's "Alcina" was just wonderful. Beautifully designed, directed, sung and acted by an attractive, accomplished cast. The performers were attactive, stylish singers with an excellent grasp of coloratura technique and brought the fantastical story vividly to life. I highly recommend this.

    Quality Opera Production from Atelier

by stagehandy on 5/5/14Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Atelier's production of Persee was sumptuous and magnificent. The opera itself is confusing, unnecessarily complex, and not so well written, but the production meant that almost didn't matter. Costuming, set design, and the cast's enthusiasm added to a memorable evening. All of the cast were excellent, the only possible exception being the King, who (although gifted with a great voice) seemed unable to project above the orchestra.

    Abduction was mesmerizing

by Anonymous on 10/30/13Elgin Theatre - Toronto

This was my first live opera (I am in my mid fifties) and I had never been exposed to a comedic one before. The light heartedness and spirited energy of the dancers blended well with the truly amazing voices that synced gloriously with the music. The choir group was also spectacular. I was impressed with the acting ability of the singers whose gesturing and postures added to the flavour of the performance admirably. I actually had "fun" at the opera!

    Der Freichutz excellently performed

    by Meercat400 on 11/5/12Elgin Theatre - Toronto

This is my first Opera Atelier performance. I was amazed at the way in which your choreographer and set designer was able accommodate a small stage. Overall the performance was excellent. You have a good size orchestra and I was amused but happy about the performance in tuning up the orchestra. As to he performance. overall the dancing very professional. I give them full marks to be able to accommodate 16 dancers in that small stage. I was taken aback seeing ballet dancers in Romantic costumes dancing the Landler dances in the first act. I would have expected a more virile dancing choreography and in folk costume.. However, the use of flesh coloured dancers in the Wolf Glen scene really added to the eerie atmosphere. The soloist singers were excellent. I was taken aback when they hopped from German to English and back to German. I am looking forward to seeing the Magic Flute in April.

    Memorable event

by Faygela on 10/30/12Elgin Theatre - Toronto

This was the first Opera Atelier event we had seen. It is a truly dedicated, professional company. From the scenery to the lighting to the dancing, the singing, the acting, the costumes, it was superb. Der Freischutz was an opera I had wanted to see for many years and the performance certainly met and went beyond my expectations. The projected translation was excellent. The theater was a fine locale and the seats were quite comfortable.

    A Must-See Theatrical Event!

by Anonymous on 10/30/12Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Rarely performed on the stages of North America, "Der Freischütz" is one of the most important and tuneful operas ever written. Opera Atelier's staging is enjoyable, creative and colourful with never a dull moment. The singers are good to above average, although it as the Ännchen who steals the show. Tafelmusik plays at their normal high level. If you are interested in opera, romanticism, dance, or musical theatre, this is an essential production to attend.

DER FREISCHUTZ AN EXQUISITE BEAUTIFUL PRODUCTION

    by HAPPYNANA1 on 10/30/12Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Everything from the artistic sets, using the paintings of Fuseli, to the music - each soloist and the chorus did wonderful justice to this fabulous opera. The costumes, and ballet simply completed the production and it was extremely enjoyable. Weber's ending was a surprise - I did not expect redemption after the deal was made with the "Devil".

    Lully's Armide in Toronto

by CraigKno on 4/23/12Elgin Theatre - Toronto

A fine production of a baroque French opera that will be making the rounds -- Glimmerglass this summer and the Royal Opera House at Versailles. Well sung and dramatically presented, my only complaint was that, since I was sitting under the overhang, the music was not as immediate as it should be, but this was not at all the fault of the performers.
