Country singer-songwriter Oliver Anthony made music history this year by becoming the first artist in history to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard charts without previously having a song on the charts. He is also the first living male songwriter to chart 13 songs simultaneously in Billboard's Top 50 Digital Song Sales.
A musical poet of the people, Anthony became an overnight national sensation with the release of "Rich Men North of Richmond," which has been dubbed the nation's "blue-collar anthem." But it resonates powerfully with Americans from all walks of life around the world.
The song has been streamed more than 77 million times on YouTube and more than 115 million across streaming platforms. Five of his other songs have made iTunes' Top 10, with "I've Got to Get Sober" reaching No. 3. "Ain't Got a Dollar" claimed the No. 1 spot on Spotify's Viral 50 list and No. 2 on ITunes.
Anthony is quickly changing the way musical artists release music and engage with their fans. He speaks directly to his fans through videos shot in his truck or surrounded by his dogs whenever the mood strikes. He doesn't rely on others to tell his story or interpret his intentions.
Earning comparisons to Bob Dylan, he is a truly authentic artist who speaks the truth for those who don't have a platform to reveal their struggles.
His passionate voice, featuring a unique and emotional rasp shaped by his personal battles, captures the despair of those living without hope, especially those who live in small-town or rural America. His songs address the nation's wealth gap, suicide rate, high taxes, and imbalance and abuse of power. Variety says, "It almost seems as if Oliver Anthony hadn't come along, someone would have had to invent him."
"Rich Men North of Richmond" has been embraced by people on both sides of the political aisles. For instance, "Rich Men North of Richmond" was recently played at the beginning of the first Republican presidential debate, which was ironic given that some of the people onstage were the same people Anthony addressed in the song.
"'Rich Men North of Richmond' touches on my time in Western North Carolina working in the factory. It talks about some people that live north of Richmond, Virginia, who I'm sure you're very aware of, who make life a little more difficult than it should be," he said.
Of course, he knows of which he writes and sings. Anthony, 31, lives off the grid in a camper in Farmville, Va., with his wife and two children (with another one on the way in November). He's been public about overcoming addiction and depression.
He dropped out of school at age 17 and later earned a G.E.D. before working industrial jobs in Virginia and North Carolina. He was unable to work for about six months in 2013 after an accident at a North Carolina paper mill fractured his skull. More recently, he worked in outside sales in manufacturing before his music career exploded.
"I found an outlet in this music," adding that he "started getting messages from people saying how much the music was helping them with their struggles in their lives."

Had a great time, enjoyed the show and the venue. Oliver Anthony put on a great show and he was real down to earth. Concessions were priced fine and food tasted good. It was cool this night and there was coffee and hot chocolate available to purchase. Bathrooms were warm and had speakers so you didnt miss much if you had to go.
Love the face that his prices were low and everyone could afford to go. Love the fact that he read from the Bible and seems to be a simple man. Great show!
Hearing him live was so much better than just listening on Spotify. He was great with the crowd and even sang some song requests.
Anthony Oliver was a wonderful artist to see in concert! This was my husbands first concert. He read us excerpts from the Bible and everything! His voice was amazing and we would definitely go back!
This was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. Simply three musicians playing real music with no theatrical effects. Well done Mr. Anthony!
I was amazed how I enjoyed this concert. Hands down awesome!!!
The concert was definitely one of the best shows I’ve been to lately! No frills just a man and two others playing acoustic and letting you appreciate the music! None of the excessive lights or 10,000 speakers that you can’t even hear the lyrics. All around amazing show
Oliver Anthony put on a great show. He is a great musician. I enjoy a singer/musician not an entertainer and he was just that. Great show
I thought he was really good, and the band sounded great. The only thing I thought could’ve been better was the venue. It was too large for the crowd, and I think the acoustics would’ve been better in an auditorium.
Great show with at a great venue, will definitely go back
I went in with little expectations because I only knew the one song from TickTok, but I was blown away! The opening act which is the two guys that tour with him were great too. We were in the pit so we were right by the stage, crowd was really into it and singing along which made it so much fun. I would definitely go see him again!
When I say the concert was incredible, Oliver Anthony put on one heck of a show along with Joey Davis & Caleb Dillard! It was definitely a night to remember 🤩 AND we got to be up close & personal for it all! We can’t wait until he comes back to Mississippi!
Have been wanting to see Oliver Anthony since I first seen his videos online. We drove 2 hours on Friday 3/08 to see him. The amount of people vaping inside the building made it hard to actually see him on stage. There were no big screens to see him and he was late getting on the stage (it was after 9 before he came out). Needless to say we left after his 3rd song to make the 2 hour drive back home. I'll just stick to his online videos. I like his views and how he speaks up for the like minded people that are tired of being used and abused by the system. If they are going to ban cigarettes from inside concerts then vaps need to be added as well.
It was awesome one of the best concerts I’ve been to!
The show was FANTASTIC! It was the best concert I’ve been to in decades. I can’t wait to see them again!!
There are truly no words that can fully describe the depth of this experience. Oliver Anthony is the real deal. I had only hoped he would be a fraction of what I had seen and hear online not only about his music but him as a person. I was not disappointed. If I could see him again tomorrow I would. DO NOT skip this opportunity to experience his concert. It's a once in a lifetime experience.
It’s refreshing to see a real artist (that’s not auto tuned) tell stories, relate to the audience, perform the songs true to form and make everyone feel like they’re a part of something bigger than themselves. And $25 tickets?!!? Unheard of now days! Thank you Chris for doing this. You’re a national treasure.
My husband and I loved the Oliver Anthony concert. Chris, better known as Oliver Anthony, and his buddies are some very talented musicians. Though it was a low budget production I think everyone there was entertained and had a good time. I also want to note that the venue was very accessible and the staff at the entrance was excellent. We had a great experience!
THIS MAN CAN ENTERTAIN!! I RECOMMEND HIS CONCERTS TO ANYONE. IT IS NOT EVERY DAY SOMEONE READS FROM THE BIBLE IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS CONCERT. IF YOU CAN SEE HIM I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT
