OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW
RETURN TO AUSTRALIA IN SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER
PERFORMING “BLONDE ON BLONDE”
WITH SPECIAL GUEST VALERIE JUNE
Acclaimed Statesiders OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW will return to Australia for the first time in eight years to play a string of East Coast dates this September and October, in addition to their already-announced performance at the Caloundra Music Festival. On their Australian shows, Old Crow Medicine Show will pay tribute to their music icon, Bob Dylan, by playing his seminal 1966 album, Blonde On Blonde, in full.
Hailing from the Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Memphian and fellow Tennessean VALERIE JUNE, who has shared the stage with the likes of Sharon Jones, Sturgill Simpson, Jake Bugg and more, will join Old Crow Medicine Show on their Australian run, rounding out an authentic ‘Taste of Americana’ double-bill for local audiences.
Old Crow Medicine Show and the beguiling Valerie June promise to deliver a night of authentic Tennessee tunes when they touch down in Australia later this year, traversing country, blues, roots and more, with a little bit of soul and gospel thrown in for good measure.
Crowd sat back and enjoyed the music but once a song was over it sounded like game 7 at the world series. Only NYC can pull off a show like that.
I had a wonderful time last night. A dynamic mix of music and fun. I loved the Felice Brothers, Ian and James Felice were exceptional. Great show.
All the greats on stage at once... amazing. Wish I could see this exact show once a year!
15 players on stage at times, the music was raucous! And then when their was just two, like Dave and Gillian, it was sublime. A real musical event. And the Beacon shined.
Excellent show.....from start to finish. Justin was amazing....Felice Bros. rocked.....Dave and Gillian....flawless....OCMS....speachless. Few sound issues.....but other than that, an extremely memorable show. THANKS!
I bought tickets to see Dave and Gillian, but was happily surprised by Justin Townes Earle, Felice Brothers (less so) and Old Crow MS (more so).....but Dave and Gillian's set to open the second half was the hightlight for me, and their cover of Bob Dylan's Queen Jane Approximately was one of the best live performances that I have ever witnessed....truly incredible!
Big fans of Gillian and David, especially after just seeing them do 2 sets at Newport. Also big fans of Felice Brothers. Combining these musicians with Old Crow was brilliant. The musicians recombined all night long, playing with each other and all together at the end, which was incredible, so much fun and great music! Less of a fan of Justin Townes Earle, but he held his own pretty well and blended in. I would like to know whose brain child this was and who put together all of the musical for the tour. Anyone know?
This show was amazing! Every Act (Justin Townes Earle, Felice Brothers, Dave Rawlings + Gillian Welch, and the OCMS) were each outstanding!!!! I've seen Gillian and Dave play before but not the others. Every act was different and full of their own personality. Also- I've never heard the Felice Brothers before last night- and I am totally converted into an instant fan. I cannot wait until they swing back through NYC. Awesome!
Awesome show. Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welsh were great as usual!
First OCMS show and first time at the new House of Blues. Both the show and the venue did not disappoint! My only gripe is that of the 4 bands that played, it seemed that the Old Crow was set was the shortest, though I could be wrong. I had seen reviews of other shows where they played 20+ songs, if they played 10 last night it would be generous - what they lacked in quantity they made up for in quality. Thankfully the other bands did not disappoint, especially the Felice Brothers. I had never heard of them before and by the end of the night I was buying 2 of their CDs. Members from each band sat in with each other on the majority of songs, and on some it seemed their were 15 people on stage. They really seemed to enjoy playing with each other. I felt at moments like I was present at the Last Waltz
This show had great coherence and lots of energy. I was a little disappointed because I bought the tickets thinking it was a Gillian Welch show. She played with the David Rawlings Machine but didn't play any of her solo material. The Felice Brothers were a lot of fun. Great venue for the show.
Overall the show was decent. I had not seen J.T. Earle before and enjoyed his set. The Felice Brothers didn't really do it for me. Don't care for the singer's style and there was more running/jumping around for show than musical talent in my humble opinion. DRM was great, as always. Unfortunately this is where the "venue horrible" comment comes in to play the most. Every time I go to the HOB I swear I will never go back. I will have to be desperate to go here ever again. During DRM you could barely hear them over the din of people talking at the bars. People were just rude and did not even pay attention. Most of the night as well they spent more time coming and going from the bars/bathrooms and talking than they did listening to the show. OCMS set at the end was good. High energy and loud enough to drown out those who were there for God-only-knows what reason...certainly not to listen to good music.
Well the lineup was great and the venue just about perfect -- no crowding even though it was sold out and nice and cool on a muggy summer night. The opener, Justin Townes Earle was terrrific, but played briefly! The next act, the Felice Bros. were garage band smashers, big on display with much less talent than anyone else on the night's bill. I know they pleased some in the crowd, but overall they kept the stage way too long for this fan's liking. David Rawlings and Gillian Welch were extraordinary as usual, if a bit too slow in tempo for the entire set. It was great when OCMS in their form came on and fired up the place, amazing talent, incredible energy and the encore was phenomenal. If only they'd played a bit longer set and had Felice Bros. exit about twenty minutes earlier.
Justin Townes Earl was awesome. The Felix Brothers were the worst band I've seen in a long time. They were drunks who could barely play their instruments. The David Rawlings Machine was good. I wish the entire night featured more Gillian Welch. Old Crow Medicine show played a couple of great songs, but tanked when they invited the other bands back up. If only concert tickets were refundable...
The show was one of the best shows I have seen. The 4 bands swing in and out intermixing through out that just brought new life to their great songs, A feeling of genuine good friends and great musicians. Must see show, this is a real hoedown.
Justin Townes Earle - Down home country charm, very impressed live Felice Bros. - Energy and intensity, didn't know what to expect and not sure they totally fit the genre of the evening but loved it anyway Gillian Welch and David Rawlings - A bit of a lull in the concert, but a great rendition of OCMS's "I hear Them All" segueing into This Land is Your Land was cool. That man slays on the acoustic guitar. I only wish they had brought out OCMS to play The Weight, the one thing I really wanted to hear most. OCMS - Rocked the house except for Ketch's horrible emo tight pants. Brought out some classics to play with the full group at the end.
Flat out amazing show! The Old crows are a must see. Tho the intro band (the brothers) were not very good.
In a concert experience reminiscent of the Last Waltz, with incredible artists sharing a microphone, and your mind being blown when you realize how many amazing musicians are sharing the stage, I had no idea one person could screw all this up: that horrible violinist/washboard player of the Felice Brothers. I could have done without that whole band. Sharing the stage with Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings and Justin Townes Earle, people who have shaped the genre of music you are performing, I would expect a little more respect for these artists instead of running around splashing water on the audience and acting like you are a member of a hiphop group, fake rapping. The Felice Brothers ruined an otherwise outstanding evening, an amazing display of bluegrass talent. The tunes played were all excellent choices, including great covers of Dylan and Neil Young songs, and artists swapping tunes and collaborating. Wonderful musicianship by great performers.
Awesome show, the whole 3 or 4 hours were bursting with energy from the band and the crowd, and I loved how all the performers played together at the end. I was a little disappointed that the Dave Rawlings Machine didn't do more Gillian stuff, but it was alright because she did an awesome Miss Ohio encore, and Dave's stuff is also great. The only thing I really didn't like was the Fellice brothers. They weren't at all what you'd expect at a bluegrass show, but a lot of the crowd seemed to like them anyway. Also, I think it's worth mentioning that during the encore, Gillian strapped on a Les Paul, and they played ACDC's "It's a Long Way to the Top"
Looking at the lineup no one would have expected these groups to have too much in common, except a love of the South and traditional country music stretching back through Johnny Cash to Hank Williams. The four groups, Justin Townes Earle, The Felice Brothers, The Dave Rawlings Machine and Old Crow Medicine Show (listed in order of appearance) played together and both individual sets. The audience really ranged wide from college kids to old timers. Most of the fans came to hear a specific group, maybe as a favorite, but had knowledge of the other groups. After an intro group jam on "The Big Surprise" led by a dark and raucous Felice Bros., JTE and his partner took the stage with a mix of country, honky tonk and an olde time Nashville sound. JTE is vastly different from his father and middle-namesake, both in appearance and sound. It was a good start, but he was way outdone by the Felice Brothers who took the stage for a 45 minute set that was a mix of rock and electric country, poetry and dancing that brought to mind The Doors more than anything traditional. The crowd ate it up, definitely a fan favorite. After a 30 minute break, The Dave Rawlings Machine came on. Dave and his wife Gillian Welch don't tour around these parts much and haven't had an album out since Soul Journey over six years ago (last time through was for the Sweet Honey Revue tour with Emmylou Harris about three years ago). The set consisted a mix of DWM songs and covers including Cortez the Killer and closing with Queen Jane Approximately. Dave's playing was great but his guitar didn't sound so good and wasn't really designed for the type of lead he plays. A better guitar with a cutaway style would have been more appropriate. Though I like his songs, his voice does get a bit whiney over time and unfortunately Gillian was never allowed a lead. To be honest, I prefer her songs and voice over his and was disappointed by the set list. They had pretty much lost the crowd half-way through and conversation was louder than the music. I would hope they'd come through town again and at a more intimate venue also, highlighting more of Gillian! OCMS had a great set, with Ketch Secor on lead walking us through his local experience and a rowdy set, closing it out with "Wagon Wheel" of course with the other musicians onstage. Gillian did get a chance to lead on "Miss Ohio" a classic, though I think "Wrecking Ball" would have made for a better jam. All-in-all a great show, an interesting mix (and sometimes clash) of style but that's representative of culture and ,music today--anything goes and boundaries are never clear.
