Oklahoma City Thunder History

The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.

The Thunder are now the only major professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.

The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.

The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first matchup, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following the 2023–24 season, head coach Mark Daigneault won the league’s Coach of the Year Award.

The team won their first NBA Championship as the Thunder in 2025.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center

The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center(Opens in new tab).

But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

My kid was really looking forward to this. First time at paycom. It's a really nice arena. On par or better than many NBA arenas. Save time by ordering food online and picking it up when it's ready. Overall a good experience

  • Could not sit down.

    by Cmiser10 on 1/16/24Paycom Center - Oklahoma CityRating: 2 out of 5

My son won 2 tickets back in November. So him and my wife went and I bought a single ticket as close as I could to them. My seat was in-between 2 heavier set gentlemen. Needless to say I was only able to see about half of my seat so I had to stand in the hall/walk area the whole game.

  • Thunder Up!

by RBC on 1/16/24Paycom Center - Oklahoma CityRating: 4 out of 5

Thunder games are always fun. My evening was wonderful, but there are a few issues that need addressing. First, the ushers are awesome--very helpful. The food vendors are friendly and efficient. The bathrooms are clean and large enough. Now.....here's what the Thunder organization may want to work on if they plan on building a new arena--more knee space and wider seats! I am a thin person and even I had issues with being comfortable. When you have a bulky coat, it's nearly impossible to have your coat and body fit into the chair. Also, when anyone in your row leaves, you must stand up. That can get tiresome. My biggest "gripe"is the cup holders. I bought a regular soda and had two sips before it tumbled out of the holder. The holder is not deep enough for a balance. The person in front of me also lost their mixed drink with the same problem. Note: in new arena--please have 2 separate drink holders--one for small mixed drinks and a deeper one for taller soft drinks. That is all:)

  • Don’t pay for the parking pass on here

by KDot on 1/16/24Paycom Center - Oklahoma CityRating: 4 out of 5

The Scissortail parking lot did not honor our parking pass and we had to pay double. The pay one center was great and seeing the Thunder was amazing. But yeah, don’t buy the parking pass. Pay when you get there.

  • Amazing experience - Away team fan

by Nick on 1/5/24Paycom Center - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

My son (12) is a Celtics fan and this was his first NBA game. We drove 5 hours from Kansas City and loved every minute of it. We had interactions with people at the gift shop, security, ushers, and others. Everyone was overly nice and made our day that much more special. We were next to one of the tunnels and the guest services person was talking to us before the game. My son clearly wearing his Tatum jersey, she still came up and was so polite. She said something like "well hopefully you become a OKC fan after your experience". She was right. He will always love the Celtics, but if they are not playing one another he will be cheering on OKC. Went to the gift shop and bought a jersey to show support. Thank you to all the OKC kingdom. You made it a great experience and lasting memory.

I always enjoy the 4-5 games a year I attend. I’m handicapped with crutches and all Paycom ushers, security, are always helpful getting me safely to my seat to enjoy the game and then safely back out of Paycom.

  • Great Game / Great Venue

by John Dawg on 12/30/23Paycom Center - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

There are no bad seats in the house. The game was great! The apparel they sell are fair priced. The food and beverages are pricey but I’m sure it’s the same at similar venues. The half time show was not professional in any way. We had an awesome time!!!
