Oklahoma City Thunder History

The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.

The Thunder are now the only major professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.

The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.

The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first matchup, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following the 2023–24 season, head coach Mark Daigneault won the league’s Coach of the Year Award.

The team won their first NBA Championship as the Thunder in 2025.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center

The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center(Opens in new tab).

But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

Game 1 of the 2012-2013 NBA playoffs went just as expected. The Oklahoma City Thunder handled their business as they needed to, smothering the Rockets to get the W1 for this round. Everything went smoothly as far as the experience and seating. Love going to the games. THUNDER UP!

  • Safalosa's community service is awesome!

by LilChig1 on 4/18/13Sunday talk show on either channel 4 or channel 9 - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

It is wonderful that Safalosa is raising funds for the children in The Republic of South Africa, and that he is a role model they can relate to. My husband and I have made several trips to the country and helped build and supply schools in the rural areas under President Mandella's term; therefore, we would be honored to contribute to Safalosa and his wife's fundraising campaign. Please send me how this contribution can be made. Thanks.

  • Thunder gets LOUD!

by Ren311 on 3/12/13Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 4 out of 5

Such a great venue, and such a fun event + a Thunder win. If you're traveling to OKC for a Thunder home game, I recommend staying at the Courtyard Marriot. It's directly next door to Chesapeake Arena and parallels all of the the restaurants, bars, and nightlife the Bricktown area has to offer. Great experience! Our tickets were reasonably priced, and even in the "nosebleed" section, a great view of the court and a lot of spectator involvement.

  • Spectacular Basketball!!!!!!!

by CelticsFan8 on 3/12/13Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

Wonderful facility with great fans! Came into the arena cheering for the opposing team but was never treated badly. Very hard to get good seats but I don't think there's a bad seat in the arena. We sat 2 rows from top and could see really well.

  • Great Time

What an amazing experience! This was my husband and I's third Thunder game and we had a blast each time. The excitement of Loud City is second to none. We just wish the t-shirt cannon could reach as high as we were sitting. :)

  • by Anonymous on 2/2/13Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 4 out of 5

Thunder game and atmosphere were great! Our seats were NOT great. Spent over $400 for 2 tickets in section 104 (Row U Seats 18 & 19). These seats had an obstructed view. Was not informed these seats were an obstructed view when purchasing these tickets.
